i guess i'm a furry so i'll explain my experience, which is in no way universal

i got into the fandom because i loved stuff like balto and the lion king and other movies/tv/games/books with mostly animal characters. i liked seeing fanwork of those things and discussing them with other fans, just like anyone in any other fandom. a lot of people moving in those fandom circles shared a lot of my other general interests (drawing animals, collecting animal toys or figurines, an appreciation of animals and the natural world) and referred to the whole thing as furry.

honestly i'm not sure what the difference is between "fan of animal stories" and "furry" bc there are people who call themselves furries and are very casual about it (ie, they're normal people who hold down jobs and have other hobbies, and nerding out about zootopia or whatever is just another thing they enjoy), and furries whose entire identity is being a furry. if you ask ten furries what a "furry" actually is you'll probably get ten different answers.

as far as fursonas go, it's usually just an animal you like or think is cool. some people pick something popular and cute (wolves, foxes, etc) and some people put a lot of thought into what animal they really feel represents them or they identify with. most fursonas are still badass things like big cats or dragons or deer, so there's probably a lot of wish fulfilment in there too.

fandom as a whole honestly

i see the same tropes repeated over and over endlessly. every fandom is a viper's nest of shipping drama and the annoying anti vs. proshipper shit. every male character gets woobified and forgiven for all their sins while female characters get treated like dogshit for far less egregious crimes. go into a character tag looking for gifsets and instead i find a bunch of cringe character x reader fics that assume everyone is a pale-skinned light-haired woman

fandom has been completely subsumed by the worst of capitalistic consumption. gone are the days where i felt i could geek out with other people over shared canons. now it feels like yet another gig where i have to market myself

woobification has always been a big thing
female characters have always been treated that way. especially by the media they're in
etc

i see people use fanbase mostly especially ever since there’s been an uptick in dudebros language with younger fans who are afraid of being seen as cringe for what they like.

The only sports series I've gotten into was Eyeshield 21, and I didn't know American football at all before reading it. I grew to love the sport because of how lovingly it was portrayed.

The quick attractions:

- It displays the passion and earnestness of the human spirit in a more relatable way (versus using the power of friendship to defend against a nuclear blast or whatever).
- The art of Eyeshield 21 in particular is PHENOMENAL, being drawn by the One Punch Man artist. It's a sublime treat to the eyes.
- Sports series are ultimately underdog stories with emphasis on growth and maturity, and you will see noticeable progression over time. As opposed to other long-running series, where characters may seem to get locked into being a caricature forever.

Very biased here, but if you give any sports series a shot, please make it Eyeshield 21 (the manga, not the anime). It's a riot from the very first chapter.

i do enjoy watching some sports, so i might not be able to help here, but for me it's largely about the team element and the growth of the characters and their relationships both teammates and rivalries. i haven't really indulged much in solo sports series, but they'd have the same appeal minus the growth with teammates. i also like the more grounded elements a lot of sport animes have, so i personally haven't been able to get into the more outlandish ones where people nearly have superpowers, but a lot can just be classic shounen but with sports in that regard.

if you don't like shounen in general it may not be for you admittedly.

While I haven't been into sports anime in a while I used to be very into them while also being someone who ran the gamut of "not interested in sports (chill)" to "not interested in sports (obnoxious)" so from that time:

- it's about the homoeroticism. A bunch of characters of the same gender in close quarters for long periods of time in emotionally intense situations! (Honestly, het fans of sports anime, sub question: what are YOU doing here???)

- funny enough, pop idol group rules apply here too. Even the smallest sports team is more than half a dozen characters and any sports anime needs at least a few rival teams... that many characters, you're almost certain to have a blorbo.

-great rival sitautionships but the stakes are never actually bad enough that someone is gonna die over it, so a lot of emotional stuff to play with but easy to find common ground between who you want to ship (but also plenty of mafia AUs if you do want that rivalry to involve someone being dead)

- you'll get as much explanation of the sport to follow what matters to the show within the show itself but tbh a lot of the Sport is mostly vibes. Like when they accurately portray the Sport people are quick to point it out and geek out about it because it's a rarity (or was back when I was into it).

Be careful though... you may develop at least a casual interest in the Sport because of the anime. It's been known to happen.

I don't understand... the whole concept, really? I get the idea of someone being a YouTuber using an anime face to stream, but the fandom and the groups(?) and big companies sponsoring or cultivating them like idols or something? And I guess I don't get the appeal either, though there are youtubers whose content I enjoy and idol groups whose work and music I also like.

i genuinely don’t know what people mean when they talk about the body or profile of wine/beer/ale/whatever because all of it just tastes like burning or very bitter. i know people who are very into wine and have invited me to join their wine tasting parties and tbh, they all tasted and smelled the same: very sour and/or very bitter.

is this something that i just need to keep trying to understand? i don’t enjoy drinking because of how it tastes although i don’t mind hanging out with friends who are. i usually just get something non-alcoholic and there are a few cocktails i do enjoy, although they’re usually very sweet drinks that you can barely tell that there’s alcohol, like lemon drops or vodka with cranberry juice.

genuinely, please explain what makes these things special. I understand crazes, I have partaken in them. And I get the appeal of blind boxes. But this is a whole new level of absurd to me. This isn't even like beanie babies or funkos where there's all sorts of different animals or characters. It's all the same gremlin, just different colors of fur. Sometimes its eyes will be closed but thats about it in terms of actual diversity as far as I can see. I've seen clips of an unboxing where a grown woman loses her actual shit and starts flailing because...... the labubu is grey???? okay what does that mean? why is that so exciting? and her young child is just standing next to her having only 0.1% of her excitement

in my eyes this is like if adults went bananas over troll dolls. It's the sort of fake craze you would see in an episode of south park except somehow it's real. Is it FOMO or what?
