Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for fictional character role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Do not solicit money, Dreamwidth points, or other currency unless you are offering a good or service in return.
Discussion of or soliciting RP for celebrities or other non-fictionalized versions of real people is not allowed.

coffee shop/university/slice of life au

something about rping my characters doing mundane life stuff sounds like it would get stale quick.

i feel like it's escapism and wish-fulfillment in the same way that a lot of fantasy scenarios are. okay, sure, going and grabbing a coffee is a far more accessible activity than being chosen by a magic artefact to go and save the kingdom and woo a bunch of maidens in the process...but we always have so much background shit going on in our lives, always something to be stressed out about. like the fact that coffee is so expensive now, and if i buy the fucking coffee i ACTUALLY want and not a plain black americano (which is STILL overpriced), couldn't i have put that money towards something more productive? i'm skint as-is.

...but sometimes just putting your character within the peaceful mundane and writing a scene off of it can be just as if not more relaxing than doing the damn thing yourself, because writing makes you look through someone else's eyes and notice all of the little enjoyable things you might not have when you were getting scam-called in the line at the Starbucks and then they made your drink wrong. your character goes to Starbucks and they fall madly for the barista, and when they spill their coffee because they're so dumbfounded and tripping up over themselves, that's cute comic relief and not "aw hell i should have just saved the money for bus fare after all"

i might not be selling this and might just be making myself sound very sad. anyway,

mundane slice of life stuff can definitely get stale after a bit. personally i feel it's more like...a nice breather. something to dip into now and again that's low effort and enjoyable without being taxing. good for when you've got a lot of irl stressors and you just want something low-key and maybe a lil sappy or shippy or silly. but also The Character is at the center of all of this. for example i hated my university years and am in no rush to relive it, but i have some characters whom i'd love to write some school years scenes with because they never got to experience that kind of mundane life in their canons...i think it would be interesting to watch them go from hard-knock circumstances to a comparatively chilled out school life and see how they cope with the change of pace, plus get to see how they handle getting to make friends and having to balance their schoolwork after years of fantastical anime teenage protag bullshit.

I can't speak to coffee shop aus but I do love university au situations because I have a fondness for the academic setting, and for me, personally, there's a lot of freedom that comes in that age range & specific setting. that said, I don't rp them going to class or doing homework (though it is a thing, something the characters might need to overcome/deal with - they want to go to a party, but have homework, how are they going to manage this). it's a setting where characters might encounter something weird, or have their horizons opened up, or finally have a taste of freedom without the responsibilities of adulthood. sometimes it can just be a nice, fun backdrop for some characters.

however, I am loathe to rp simple "walk around and talk" or "sit in the library and talk" or "get coffee and awkwardly flirt with the barista" often, so if I have such a setting, I'll always do something bigger with it. (the coffee shop is the portal to hell, so a lot of demons come through it, and the devil secretly runs it, and oops now the character is flirting with a demon who wants their soul. the library is magical and studying means having to catch one of the flying books and/or dealing with the magical library cats that demand attention every ten seconds. the weather turns into a thunderstorm the characters have to avoid, or risk getting drenched, and then that turns into passionate making out because they realize they like each other even though they both look like drowned rats.) (which sadly, I do less of now because it seems that turns people off??? I have tables with various scenarios I can use to turn a situation into something chaotically fun and no one to use them with anymore.)

on the other hand, I have some characters who encounter a lot of hell all the time (constantly on the run types) and don't have downtime in canon, so getting to play those quieter, more mundane things are really nice for them. I love it when my characters get to sit with their bff in their hotel room and have ice cream and wine and just relax. those aren't threads I can just meander with, though. they have to hit an ending at some point (even if it's a couple hundred tags long!) And after they have their bonding and feel better, they get to go out and kick some ass and then bandage each other up.

Hit up here if you're interested!! I'm always down for chaotic twist fluff (or non fluff). Maybe we've got a few characters who we can mash together, anon!

That sounds like so much fun - I do threads like those too when I can :)

Honestly I think this is a knock on effect from how the source media has cut itself down to only the most dramatic high stakes bits. Movies, comics, shows, games all of them are down to tell only the most world shattering parts of stories so there's not a lot of...interpersonal relationship building. Banal settings let you really get into the nitty gritty of interpersonal relationships and subtle motivation.

It's kinda like turning the character around in a box to look at them from new angles. Sometimes you even get some really wild CR notes out of situations like this.

It's low stakes adventures and can be a nice break from earth shattering stuff.

i'm like that anon above you who really likes academic settings and something about putting characters from really gruesome/high risk canons into something as mundane as a university is just... fun. it's not the same with, say, haikyuu characters or whatever, because senpai will die (go to university) after he graduates anyway but levi and eren from aot at university and eren is scared of his thesis supervisor because he wants to (and will) beat the shit out of him if he doesn't turn in his work? that's funny as fuck to me. also trying to transfer the quirks that come with a fantasy setting into a modern setting is always hilarious and ott to me. like wdym felix from fe3h carries a sword around on campus and professor erwin randomly lost his arm during summer break.

this is a digression from the main point, but thank you for reminding me so i can rant about how much i hate that the term "filler," especially in anime communities but it seems to be spreading, has become so corrupted. it's getting to the point that if something isn't obvious plot advancement or "hype moments"/fight scenes, it's just "filler" and that makes me want to jump off a bridge.

filler is when you cram in extraneous/non source material to extend the run time of an anime so you don't outpace the source material! that's it!! most of the times what you're calling "filler" is *necessary character development* and resetting the rising action to build pacing, you philistines

/end rant

I like those memes just fine, usually because I can come up with things to make it interesting. About to class but someone snuck in a dog that is now running through the halls and causing chaos? Someone's science project it's the blooob came alive or caused a fire, sneak out to play hookey, etc. Even just chatting can be a jumping point into getting involved in some silly shenanigans. You just have to be creative. I'm lucky that my gal's canon allows for slice of life, action, dark and silly stuff and I can flex my creativity with most memes.
