+1 I've heard "ew but the art" for 20 years and if that's what's keeping you missing out on a great story, that's on you. I used to think the same, but then I tried it and liked it.

yeah i'm ngl i don't see why some people act snobbily as if you're an underappreciative peasant if you can't get past manga art you don't vibe with. comics/manga are a visual platform to deliver a story, art is 50% of things. this isn't a book.

'Great story' is being way too generous.

OP's pacing is absolute dogshit and the padding and character bloat make it even worse. Oda's hideous art style is the least of that manga's problems.

the same could be said about any other shonen slop series and yet it's op in particular that ruffles everyone's jimmies so much... plus it's not like dwrp is flooded with op characters and like you can't go a single meme without hearing nami's tits going BOIYOIYOIYOING in the distance.

It's because One Piece fans are worth than Homestuck fans when it comes to being unable to accept that the series is bad and some people just aren't going to like it.

For more than a decade now I've heard OP fans insist that you need to read at least 50 chapters for the story to pick up, and that you should really give it at least 100 before giving up. Not a single one of them seems to realize that it's not a matter of the story improving, just a matter of being snared by sunk cost fallacy.

OP didn't become one of the most influential shonen series of all time by being unequivocally, irredeemably bad. this is genuinely a taste thing and that's okay.

It probably isn't all bad, but it also probably helps that a lot of people picked it up when they were kids or teens and have continued following it for the last 25 years.

Because it's not. One Piece is just regular bad in the same way that Marvel movies, Naruto, My Hero Academia, Genshin Impact, and Harry Potter are bad: bloated, mediocre, derivative, and boring.

Popularity isn't an indicator of quality. If anything, that sort of massive success is usually only seen by properties that are okay at best. That mediocrity is the very thing that makes them unchallenging and easy for people of all ages to engage with.

i tried OP, i couldn't get into it, and i think the art is hideous, but as long as nobody's trying to force it down my throat i don't care. i'm curious sometimes because the people who like it seem to *really* like it and enjoy the characters and the story, but i'm not curious enough to try to get into a series that's been running for literal decades. i have shonen trash of my own that i love, so i won't judge people for liking what they like.
