It's because One Piece fans are worth than Homestuck fans when it comes to being unable to accept that the series is bad and some people just aren't going to like it.

For more than a decade now I've heard OP fans insist that you need to read at least 50 chapters for the story to pick up, and that you should really give it at least 100 before giving up. Not a single one of them seems to realize that it's not a matter of the story improving, just a matter of being snared by sunk cost fallacy.

OP didn't become one of the most influential shonen series of all time by being unequivocally, irredeemably bad. this is genuinely a taste thing and that's okay.

It probably isn't all bad, but it also probably helps that a lot of people picked it up when they were kids or teens and have continued following it for the last 25 years.

can i ask if you like living in japan? i've always wanted to visit, but i've never been sure if foreigners are accepted well

i really loved it. when i was there, most people were cool with foreigners, especially if you're just visiting, especially especially if you're white.

if you're brown and speaking chinese, portuguese, or or tagalog, ymmv, but i think as a tourist/visitor - as long as you follow the local rules and keep your ID/passport on you in case of emergencies and bored police who want to racially profile you for fun, you'll have a great time no matter what.

ngl nonny i've been out of the jpn language learning game for years, my spouse speaks jpn & i am lazy so i don't actively study anymore. maybe some other anons can chime in?

when i was learning, it was helpful for me to immerse myself in jpn media to read and listen to, but i feel like that's really obvious advice haha. the grammar itself is so reversed from what we're use to in english that immersion is key, in my opinion, or you're always going to be trying to force your english thoughts into jpn sentences and it can't work that way.

but honestly most japanese people you casually meet will be thrilled if you can speak even the basics to get around. it'll be super motivating when you're met with "WOW YOUR JAPANESE IS INCREDIBLE!!!" for even trying at all 🥲.

Because it's not. One Piece is just regular bad in the same way that Marvel movies, Naruto, My Hero Academia, Genshin Impact, and Harry Potter are bad: bloated, mediocre, derivative, and boring.

Popularity isn't an indicator of quality. If anything, that sort of massive success is usually only seen by properties that are okay at best. That mediocrity is the very thing that makes them unchallenging and easy for people of all ages to engage with.

i tried OP, i couldn't get into it, and i think the art is hideous, but as long as nobody's trying to force it down my throat i don't care. i'm curious sometimes because the people who like it seem to *really* like it and enjoy the characters and the story, but i'm not curious enough to try to get into a series that's been running for literal decades. i have shonen trash of my own that i love, so i won't judge people for liking what they like.
