many of the out and proud proshippers i had the misfortune of interacting with acted like being a proshipper was a marginalized identity, not that a lot of people gave them the slip in fandom because, understandably, most people don't want to interact with shota/loli/csa, fictional or not. it was incredibly noxious to me as a racial and gender minority.

ultimately i don't care what people are into because i can't do shit about it. but i have the right to curate my space and consistently it was proshippers who tried to violate my boundaries regarding shota/loli/csa and, once refuted enough times, escalated to bigotry. i shouldn't have to tell people i'm a survivor to be left alone and often that was the wrong move anyways because they took it as a challenge

both sides are incredibly annoying but only one side took a malicious glee into trying to 'convert' me to their side. i just hit the bricks now whenever someone claims to be a proshipper

i’m sorry you had to deal with that, anon. tbh this is why i side eye proshippers because i personally don’t have a problem with lolicon/shotacon existing, but i have had run ins with those who drag it into public spaces and claim discrimination when told to cut that shit out.

unfortunately i have to say that the anti side isn’t better, as you have the weirdos who will share loli/shota art and claim that they're simply raising awareness or whatever. the worst is when some of them will post a actual photo of a baby and go “i bet you think this is sexy” which - holy shit, what the fuck is wrong with some people?????

yeah both sides are utterly ridiculous but unfortunately due to trauma i have a visceral reaction towards one side more than the other. regardless i think it's a stupid thing to identify with either way and it's best i don't get involved with people who use it as a label for my own peace of mind

this shit permeating fandom as a whole has a lot to do with why i stopped posting fanart or writing fanfic. rp is now my only fannish hobby left

it's a squick for me but i also think it's disturbing to suggest that lolicon/underage animated stuff is in any way in the same category as actual csem involving actual children and feel weird that this way of thinking is moving into the real world with people getting prosecuted for it

otoh i find it deeply frustrating that it's hard to filter out underage stuff online esp with anime and imo a lot of proshippers don't seem to understand that the average person doesn't want to see that kind of thing at all even in passing. idgaf if she's technically 2000 yrs old

yeah one reason why i’m extremely unbothered by loli/shota is i’ve had several jobs of moderating social media spaces over the past fifteen years and unfortunately that meant i’ve seen actual csam/csem. i would still rather not have to see the former, but it’s ultimately usually just weirdos who are harmless and nothing gets escalated. i was left in tears the first time i had to deal with csam/csem at my first job, and i still remember at how unsettled and distraught i was for the rest of the day.

which is why it felt incredibly insulting when i would handle reports for child endangerment/csam, and most of the time it was shit like porn of the characters from boku no hero or whatever.

Yeah I would recommend not engaging with the "proshippers DNI" people. Even if you don't want to get involved with the discourse, 1. if you have an agegap or an incest ship or kink on noncon like villain wins stories or any number of other things people like that will lump you in with proshippers and treat you accordingly if you come to their notice and 2. way higher incidence of harassment among types like that. Even if they're not harassing you, I think anyone and everyone is better off looking for friends who don't do that shit.

Do you have a sense of whether the fandom skews young? I think the pro/antiship discourse tends to be amplified in young fandoms.

the term 'proshipping' has been catastrophized by 'antis' (antishippers) and the meaning has been warped from 'pro-shipping' to 'pro-shipping-everything-problematic-and-endorsing-pedophilia-explicitly-and-loudly'. if you see 'proshippers dni', it's someone who understands it to be the latter and who has never questioned that definition

Frankly if all there is is “proshippers DNI” then I think it’s silly to act like that person isn’t likely discourse poisoned in their own right. “Proshippers and antis DNI” is the “just sick of the discourse” option. It’s also not what people are observing in this case, as “proshippers DNI” has been explicitly mentioned.
