nowhere on op there's a mention of dwrp, they're talking social media in general. they literal asked why this is a craze everywhere. none of the people replying mentioned dwrp either. only now i found ONE extra comment replying to a third person mentioning plurk.

but even if they had mentioned dwrp, the point is that this fad comes exactly from the same place that stanley cups did. yeah capitalism exists yadda yadda but there's a new way on how people engage with hobbies and collecting and these dolls, just like the cups, are part of that.

i am not comparing apples to oranges sadly. it's the same shit. it's a fad that kicks off on tiktok and suddenly everyone is buying fifty of them just to collect all colors. people physically got aggressive at a store when the limited valentine cups were released.

nope, the only difference is the stanley cups are usable as actual cups?? but people seriously were going crazy for this drinkwear to the point that they would have like 40+ of them (ironic since the whole point of reusable drinkware is to limit over consumption). Fads are gonna fad.

It was insane. People were lining up around the block when new releases dropped, people got into fights over them. They started coming out with all these "accessories" for Stanleys like silicone boots to make them not fall over, chapstick holders you could put on them, dangly bling you could attach to them.

The only real difference is that there was no blind box element to Stanleys, they knew they were camping out waiting for stores to open to get the new super special green cup or whatever.

There's always been products that get randomly hyped, though. Remember Furby? I can't be the only person who's parents got them one when they didn't even want one, because of all the hype.

the stanley cup thing confused the hell out of me, i couldn't figure out why people were suddenly obsessed with hockey trophies
