In my experience, in my circles:

Proship is associated with writing and reading whatever you want, without considering fictional content necessarily reflective of a person's moral character. Reading, writing, and making art portraying abusive relationship dynamics, age gap ships including relationships that would be pedophilia if they were real, noncon, and general dark content has the same moral weight as reading, writing, and making art portraying sweet fluffy fics and happily ever afters. It is all ok.

Antidom is associated with thinking that someone's likes in fiction reflect their morality as a person. Liking an age gap ship including those that would be pedophilic if real (and you can see in other comments this gets stretched to grown adults being "child coded" or adult characters that met as kids by some antis), noncon, etc means that you are a pedophile or a rape apologist.

I had a friend whose dark m/m fics got sent to her very traditional parents. She naturally nuked the whole account. I've also seen artists horrifically impacted by harassment campaigns rustled up by antis. My sympathy tends to be more on the proship side as I'm in favor of making and consuming whatever kind of content you want without it necessarily saying much about you. Naturally, members of both sides take it way too far and proshippers have really sucked seed too. The descriptions of proshippers defending racism and not being able to take no for an answer on their age gap lolisho content is really bad, and I know proshippers can end up going off the deep end just like antis.

If I were you I would be pretty careful with those people who have "proshippers DNI" in their profiles though, and probably would not engage with them personally at all.

most people nowadays don't put proshippers dni on their profiles they put both anti and proshippers dni... because the majority of reasonable people are fed up of this nonsense and are normal people who pay taxes and engage in fannish hobbies for fun

I linked the comment bc it refers to seeing "proshippers DNI" notes in profiles. In my experience it is pretty common to have "proshippers DNI" in a profile with no word on antis at all, and that makes me pretty wary of people with those notes.

and i've had the same done by people who claim to be proshippers. racist harassment and gore spam sent to my dms. people purposely linking me to shota when i'm a survivor

yeah, it is uncomfortable. and it's unfortunate that i'm pretty sure the reason why i had such a bad time was because fandom is overwhelmingly white

just don't think it's useful to say 'watch out for x' where x is a label for one side only when both sides engage in the exact same noxious behavior. both sides have unhinged people

it's simply safer not to engage with any of it, no matter the team. you don't need a label to state you're a decent human being who believes in boundaries and autonomy for yourself and others

I said I'd avoid those people bc in this context I do think it matters that only one side of the whole argument rates the DNI, when behavior on both sides is terrible. If someone had a message that said they didn't want pro or anti shippers to interact, I would regard that much more neutrally. That is just not something I've seen in my circles and it's apparently not what who I presume is OP is seeing if their mention of seeing lots of "proshippers DNI" is anything to go by.

I actually do very little engagement with any of it on my part. Like I said, if I identify in any way with the "proshipper" label, it is with the definition I posted in my original response to this thread: you can create whatever you want, it doesn't reflect on you morally in and of itself.

I'm really sorry you experienced harassment in the past. You deserved a better time. I don't doubt that you're right and racism also contributed to your experience.

Yeah my experiences are not universal, but getting harassment by people who identify as antis vs those who identify as proshippers has been very a ten-to-one thing.

(also to refer to higher up, while I've seen effectively something that amounts to "antis DNI" that specific kind of language wasn't really used in my circles. "Fandom cops fuck off" and "Antis not welcome here" was more common, "DNI" in general had become something of a yellow flag for 'oh this person is going to be a Problem')

Thank you. I think people are taking me as more strongly proship-identified than I am, when I actually try to avoid the discourse most of the time. If I "identify" as proship it is in the sense of the definition I provided at the start of the thread - it is fine to make whatever fictional content you want and says nothing about you as a person.

It's extremely understandable why someone who'd received harassment from the proship side would be extremely wary and burnt. How they were treated by the "proship" side was unacceptable. Just... yeah my fandom experience has been a lot more similar to yours.
