Vtubers

I don't understand... the whole concept, really? I get the idea of someone being a YouTuber using an anime face to stream, but the fandom and the groups(?) and big companies sponsoring or cultivating them like idols or something? And I guess I don't get the appeal either, though there are youtubers whose content I enjoy and idol groups whose work and music I also like.

i follow a few, and the very short of it is: they're funny. like that's it, they consistently make me laugh. it's also nice for female streamers that don't want people seeing their real faces and stuff.

The idol agency thing came in once Cover Corp realized how much money could be milked from it and others followed suit.

There are plenty of independent vtubers out there who don't do the idol thing. But since the biggest vtuber company (Cover Corp/hololive) is putting a lot of focus on idol concerts and idol culture, there's definitely a "well the most popular ones are doing it, so I've gotta be doing it to" mentality.

Oh! I get this one.
Women + public facing hobby + Internet = Horrible things.

If you add in a layer of obfuscation, like an animated anime face to obscure their own then that's a pretty nice shield against most harassment.

Since it's way easier to get young women to VTube and because VTuber models and rigs are actually wildly expensive, complex pieces of art, naturally capitalists try to move in and become the middle man. It's a way to flood the streamer market with more female streamers that have an easier image for cultivation and, once they do leave the company, they can't keep the model and the VTuber has to start again or use their actual face, putting a huge barrier in front of them if they want to go independent.

The appeal elludes me from the other end, tbh, but the whole corporate model makes sense. Like rigging alone on these models tends to be upwards of 1500$, and rightly so. They're a huge investment for regular people especially if they want to start a channel.

i think you're overcomplicating it, tbh. there are lots of amateur male vtubers out there too and what it basically boils down to is people wanting to stream but not wanting to attach their real face to a very public nerdy hobby, especially depending on what sorts of things they like to stream. having an avatar gives the streamer something that makes their channel/content unique and identifiable while also allowing them to maintain their privacy.
