fr though sometimes the sport is made up. regardless, there is almost always a new player or fan/some fraud who snuck into the competition/love interest/reporter etc side character to stand in for the audience and solicit explanations whenever the sport needs to be explained. you don't need to be a player or knowledgeable fan of the sport to follow along with the tension and drama of the game.

The only sports series I've gotten into was Eyeshield 21, and I didn't know American football at all before reading it. I grew to love the sport because of how lovingly it was portrayed.

The quick attractions:

- It displays the passion and earnestness of the human spirit in a more relatable way (versus using the power of friendship to defend against a nuclear blast or whatever).
- The art of Eyeshield 21 in particular is PHENOMENAL, being drawn by the One Punch Man artist. It's a sublime treat to the eyes.
- Sports series are ultimately underdog stories with emphasis on growth and maturity, and you will see noticeable progression over time. As opposed to other long-running series, where characters may seem to get locked into being a caricature forever.

Very biased here, but if you give any sports series a shot, please make it Eyeshield 21 (the manga, not the anime). It's a riot from the very first chapter.

Eyeshield also leans into being super extra and over-the-top, it doesn't take the sport or itself seriously. I liked that about it, the baseball series otoh seem to be too far up their own asses to be enjoyable.

I'll be real, my favorite sports team anime is Chihayafuru, which is a sports anime about a Japanese poetry memorization card game.

No, really.

So, like. Up their own asses might not be a deterrent for everyone.

i do enjoy watching some sports, so i might not be able to help here, but for me it's largely about the team element and the growth of the characters and their relationships both teammates and rivalries. i haven't really indulged much in solo sports series, but they'd have the same appeal minus the growth with teammates. i also like the more grounded elements a lot of sport animes have, so i personally haven't been able to get into the more outlandish ones where people nearly have superpowers, but a lot can just be classic shounen but with sports in that regard.

if you don't like shounen in general it may not be for you admittedly.

While I haven't been into sports anime in a while I used to be very into them while also being someone who ran the gamut of "not interested in sports (chill)" to "not interested in sports (obnoxious)" so from that time:

- it's about the homoeroticism. A bunch of characters of the same gender in close quarters for long periods of time in emotionally intense situations! (Honestly, het fans of sports anime, sub question: what are YOU doing here???)

- funny enough, pop idol group rules apply here too. Even the smallest sports team is more than half a dozen characters and any sports anime needs at least a few rival teams... that many characters, you're almost certain to have a blorbo.

-great rival sitautionships but the stakes are never actually bad enough that someone is gonna die over it, so a lot of emotional stuff to play with but easy to find common ground between who you want to ship (but also plenty of mafia AUs if you do want that rivalry to involve someone being dead)

- you'll get as much explanation of the sport to follow what matters to the show within the show itself but tbh a lot of the Sport is mostly vibes. Like when they accurately portray the Sport people are quick to point it out and geek out about it because it's a rarity (or was back when I was into it).

Be careful though... you may develop at least a casual interest in the Sport because of the anime. It's been known to happen.

not even a het fan but fyi people can like things with same gender characters in emotionally charged situations and appreciate the friendship and teamwork aspects of it just fine without shipping

i realize that this is probably a joke but it's off-putting because same gendered people can exist around other same gendered people without it being inherently homoerotic

okay but there are ten million other feel good stories about friendship that aren't homoerotic the ways sports anime are, so yeah, kind of curious why someone would specifically pick the one genre that is well known for being homoerotic if that isn't what they're there for

i used to rp with someone years ago who was like that and she was just... straight. she liked looking at cute/hot anime guys and that's it. there were some relationships where she could see the bl vibes but aside from that she didn't see it at all. i was like her window into bl because whenever i told her that "people ship x and y btw" she'd be genuinely surprised. 99% of all male characters were simply straight to her.
