Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for fictional character role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Do not solicit money, Dreamwidth points, or other currency unless you are offering a good or service in return.
Discussion of or soliciting RP for celebrities or other non-fictionalized versions of real people is not allowed.

sure curating your own experience goes a long way...but it gets to a point where you have to curate 99.9% of the space away and at that point, is it worth it? maybe we should examine why fandom sucks donkey balls nowadays? not to be old man yells at cloud but social media and the gig economy have done a number on fandom: everything's a fucking product now, including your presence in said spaces. anon is 100% on the money about the marketing yourself part. hell the way people talk about fandom is capitalistic af: it's in terms of consumption. people are no longer artists or writers they're 'content creators' who sell themselves via merch and/or as entertainment in places like twitch

shit's bleak

i mean we can examine it til the cows come home but like what is there to actually do besides do our own thing in our own corner of the fandom, block/mute/ignore people who suck shit, and leave if we stop enjoying ourselves? because sure, you're right, the things you're saying are true of many parts of many fandoms, but 1. not everywhere is like that, and there are still parts of fandom you can enjoy yourself in, and 2. talking about it is not going to fix it, imo. the only thing that could possibly fix it (in my opinion) is staying in the parts of fandom you enjoy, keeping them active and fun, doing exactly the sort of shit you miss from old times (make zines that aren't glossy for-profit fan anthologies! do not talk about yourself like you're a "content creator"!), and just showing people by your presence and your actions that this way of doing fandom is still viable. that's all anyone can really do

I read a comment somewhere recently that pointed out that websites as we knew them are basically dead, nearly everything we consume now is through SOME form of social media, whether that's facebook, twitter, bluesky, instagram, tumblr, tiktok. And that kinda shook me because, wait, I hadn't noticed but yeah, that's true. Most of what we see is served to us through an algorithm. Back in the day, when you wanted to get into fandom, you had to go find it and/or make it. One of my first online spaces was like a bunch of tweens on a little forum on a Sailor Moon website called Chibi Angel or something. There were still flamers, but it was different. The algorithm knows rage is addicting, and the longer your eyeballs stay on the social media, the more money they make.
