Taking this question to anons because idk how to ask it elsewhere without sounding shitstirry or grudgey.

There's someone I've seen around Plurk, chatting with people who are in my game and occasionally expressing interest in it. I know this person IRL from over a decade ago, and she was a judgmental and nosy person who was extremely homophobic to me and some friends behind our backs (a mutual friend of ours eventually spilled the beans to us and cut her out.)

That said, it's been over ten years and who hasn't changed or grown in that time? If she were overtly homophobic now, she probably would've gotten the cold shoulder from dwrp, right? That said, I don't trust her not to be a 'hate the sin, not the sinner' kind of person who merely puts up a good front about it, because that's how she acted when I knew her.

If she tries to app into my game, should I reach out to the mods to ask them not to accept? Should I alert them? Should I mind my own business? Is my decade old grudge just ridiculous at this point, and I should make like Elsa?

i think you should try speaking to her instead of assuming that her beliefs haven't changed in a decade and potentially causing her to be banned from a game. why wouldn't you ask if you're concerned enough to potentially bring it to your mods?

what is the appeal of superhero canons, genuinely? as someone who's just never enjoyed them i'm perplexed as to how/why they became (arguably) dwrp's bread and butter as opposed to (to me) more relatable ordinary people. if you consume a lot of comics/MCU/dctv/etc, why? is it just the one canon or is it multiple hero canons?

Escapism. I know growing up I used to think about getting hit with radioactive cat magic powers or something. Especially if you have a shitty home life or traumatic upbringing, escaping through books and media is one of the main ways I had of keeping myself sane. I didn't just get into comics or superhero (I was more into gothy vampire/urban fantasy/fantasy stuff), but the idea is all the same. To escape your boring/hurtful life and imagine what it'd be like to be like that. To fly. To be invincible. To go from normal or pathetic to more. Peter Parker's a big one that gets attention because he was a bullied geek and he kept that face on for his day to day, but he used what he'd gained to do good. He was what a lot of people wanted to be like growing up.

So there's a little 'I want that' mixed in, and in rp, it gives people the chance to take the driver's seat of IP that's already been created and has a basis to work off of.

Something I didn't know I missed from the old game AIM chatrooms I was in. Sometimes characters react to stuff that was commented on them, the fanart that was shared, the fics on places, and so on.

An RP channel outside of DW I'm in does this, and I didn't know I missed that so much. It's cringy fun, but it's still fun, dammit.

it was cringy fun though you're right. some buddies and i once did our own in-game meme where we'd write silly flashfics of each other's characters then react IC to them. such a blast.

I don't use add ons/extensions, but I use keyboard shortcuts so I can avoid wasting time typing out coding for brackets and text spam. I find this very useful!

when you say you're 'backtag-friendly,' concretely, how long are you willing to hit back the same thread? a week? a month? two months? six? does this change in a game or meme setting?

for the sake of simplicity, assume you're talking about threads done leisurely, not with any kind of plot commitment to engage over a specific period of time.

for me, backtagging usually means i'll tag the same thread back for about one month in a game and two months in a meme, fwiw.

Half my research is looking up words for spelling and proper definitions and synonyms

Actual research for RP purposes was on the golden era of film and the movies most popular during the time, focusing on critical theory and themes, a long with looking at the aesthetics of Hollywood at the time, and when the hays code came into effect. (Luckily it wasn't for a tag, just some world building for an eventual, potential psl or something, so spending hours on it wasn't terrible.)

a lot of fanart i embedded in my characters' info pages/profiles are broken now because of artists deleting their twitter accounts en masse. i don't blame them for it and i'm glad i had at least hyperlinked all the tweets so i could confirm what had happened when i saw the missing images, but it's just kind of a bummer and i have no motivation to fix any of it.

it probs won't help your case here, but for future ref, this is why i always download the pic and re-upload it to a separate image hosting site like imgur, and then place a link to the artist's account/art post directly below it. that way there's still credit, but it's at least a bit less likely that the image itself breaks due to stuff like this

- yes but i'm very picky, if they have songs on there that i don't think are a good vibe for the character i stop listening because they're clearly wrong about them

Honest question, would it bother people if someone played a character from a BL canon as bi/pan when their specific sexuality isn't elaborated on? Beyond the fact that they're from the canon they are. I've been seeing most characters from BL canons be played as gay obviously, but I'm considering picking one up and I'm admittedly just really used to playing characters as bi/pan because I like to keep cr options open more than explicitly seeking out m/f or anything. I'm just wondering if that would be weird or make other players uncomfortable.

I've been doing a lot of introspection lately and realized that I use rp to substitute the lack of social interaction I have in life. I work a lot and barely have any irl and online friends anymore, irl because of autism and being a recluse, online because I work so much and am very out of the loop re: fandoms. whenever I feel very lonely, I get really active in rp. but then I also feel rejected as a person when someone, say, drops my threads but boomerangs with someone else. which is stupid because damn, it's just rp. and now I feel stupid and weird because I feel like I rp for the wrong reasons? idk if this makes sense.

I wonder how many other people rp just to fill some void in their lives?

Not really to fill a void so much as being bored and wanting to flex my creative muscles personally, but I too have few online and irl friends (mostly because I'm more selective about who I'm friends with, having been burned before). So I don't know how much I can really relate to your experience, nonny. I've felt disappointed and worried that I or my char is not liked when people drop threads, and I have been paranoid that someone might think I'm one of the bad people as I recently discovered I have one of the same handles as them (I'm weird and use like two or three handles because I like all the nicknames I went by).

It took me a -while- of seeing other people's having similar experiences to come to terms with the idea that it's not necessarily -me-, but it's probably people in games that got busy, or they were having more fun playing with -their- friends who take priority over some rando like me. Or they're more interested in shipping stuff, than non shippy CR stuff. Uh. Teal Deer but I don't think you're weird for RPing because you're lonely. People RP for different reasons; boredom, loneliness, some RP just because they wanna do smut with their characters, etc. You're not alone out there, if that helps! And it might not since I have a totally different experience.

generally, when playing with others, how cognizant are you of their ic-ness? i know a lot of people (myself included) tend to stress a bit too much over making every single tag as 'perfect' as possible, and it's really an annoying thing to overthink about. so is that actually something that you find yourself judging? or do you more or less not tend to notice that much?

personally i rarely think "wow this person has no idea what they're doing," or "that's not how that character should respond!!," i'm just happy to be playing lmfao

i don't know all of the canons of the characters i play with so most of the time i have no idea if they're ic or not. but i have run into situations in games where a character reacts to an event in a totally crazy way and that can totally throw me and sometimes just kills the desire to tag them.

that said most of the time i can ignore it or write it off as something to just deal with because it's not that serious. a lot of the time the ooc actions are people making morally ambiguous or nasty characters into cute woobies which i just find boring more than annoying.
