i'm switching to opera because firefox has become unusable and chrome is worse imo. does anyone have any recommendations for extensions, especially for switching journals?

opera is chromium based, so anything you had on chrome you can use on opera.

last update caused something to start making processes hang in tabs and lagging firefox. it wouldn't crash but i'd basically be stuck in the tab and the rest of the browser would be unresponsive; i also would be stuck on the current website and any link click throughs would be unresponsive, although i could scroll.

this happened mostly with tabs with video or a lot of images like pixiv but i think the problem may be related to javascript as it can happen on any tab - for instance, once it was the compose message page on dreamwidth that was the culprit.

i've relaunched in safe mode and that issue persisted, so it's not my extensions and add ons on firefox. it also can persist through sessions, such as when i force close firefox since the issue is not resolving and when i reload my windows + tabs, it immediately hangs again - the only way to solve that is to make sure that the offending tab is removed before i restore the session, since i can't even close the browser or tab.

it's the last straw for me after firefox has been slowly getting worse and worse over the years - i've been putting up with the memory leak issues for over a decade now, but this is on another level.

how many tabs do you have open? just asking because i have seen people complain about this issue and then later on they casually mention they have 30+ tabs open at the same time and think that's normal

well, that explains a lot. 30+ tabs is low for me (i am a extreme multitasker) but i never had a issue with this until the last update. i did try using extensions like auto tab discard and closing the more superfluous tabs but that issue still occurred.

do you reload the same tabs every time? maybe it's one tab that's eating all of the memory and causing it to hang. you could try closing all of the tabs and manually starting over. i know some sites really cause things to chug.

yeah, that's what i ended up doing and it seems to have fixed the hanging problem although i haven't really tried watching videos in firefox again.

yeah there's your problem. i never have more than 8-10 tabs open at most and i have zero problems with firefox.

the more tabs you have open in any browser, the more memory it uses. the more memory your computer is using, the slower it's going to run. it's really not good to leave huge numbers of tabs open because it bogs your computer processes down no matter how good a computer you have.

i'm aware of that but i never had any issues with having huge amount of tabs open until the past few weeks, notably after the last update.

Unless you have more RAM than you'll ever need and a strong CPU (or GPU if you use hardware acceleration), having that many tabs open can cause problems no matter what browser you use.

i have a i9 and 64gb of memory. it's been running fine for the past few years until now (aside from the memory leak issues that mozilla hasn't bothered fixing)

someone in my game talked all the time about how they had no less than 150 tabs open, either rp or research for rp. they showed screenshots of it. it gave me hives lol

The ones I know will conveniently "lose" all their tabs and then cry about needing to clean slate everything. Because it's just too hard finding the threads they owe tags on, even when people link them to the dw page that tracks it for you...
