anons, what is your line between "behaviour that is unpleasant that should be personally handled with a conversation or opt-out" and "behaviour that is unpleasant that is reportable to mods"?

i'd say probably try talking to them/enforcing an opt-out first depending on the level of the behavior, and if they make a huge stink about it or refuse to abide by boundaries, then take it to the mods.

if it is repeated behavior to a variety of people, though, or something like active bigotry or sexual harassment that is outside of in-character interactions, then you can probably jump straight to a mod.

How many times does a person have to drop your thread before you decide not to tag them again?

depends on how far the thread got? personally im lenient in that i'll be happy with a thread that's built up enough length for at least a decent little convo, since i rarely expect my threads to reach solid narrative completion--they usually just kind of peter out after a topic's exhausted

but, for threads dropped too early to actually get off the ground at all: if i'm the one that tagged into them, i might give it one more tag-in try after the first fizzle and then give it up if the second attempt dies early too. if they tag me first, multiple times, i'd be more apt to back maybe three or even four times before i start getting a bit weirded out. since if they're repeatedly hitting me up, it probably means they must be pretty interested in my character...? but i might still message them about our playstyles being incompatible if they just keep dropping only like three comments in over and over.

i've met a couple players that actively refuse to backtag more than a day max and drop stuff like hot potatoes left and right beyond that, which is more power to them if they're at least upfront about it, but i just can't get much fun out of that kind of pace myself

sorta annoyed with bakerstreet memes lately and thought about what meme would get my creative juices flowing. how would you guys feel about a limited-run multi-part meme that's like a game, but exists only for three weeks on bakerstreet? i wanna make it fun, willing to put a fun reward at the end, like dw points for participants that make it to the end. parts are posted once a week, overflows are your responsibility.

p1 would be a text-style, partner hook-up app. find your partners, prepare for threads, meet new thread partners. (there will be an ic section like an app, and an ooc section so you can figure out play-style matching)

p2 is the action. there will be some very minor objectives that will can be added for points. we can adopt the whose line is it anyway where the points don't matter! there will be an area map as well.

p3 is the conclusion & goodbyes. maybe a tease for a next part (if time allows but i can see myself being able to do this every other month)

any thoughts on this? too much? doomed to fail, or worth a try despite it? just to be clear i haven't thought of a premise outside of "i want some sort of collective meme continuity," so if you have ideas, i'd love to hear it. this sounds like a murder game but there is no required murder and no one is pressured to keep up with it. however, without the urgency, i wonder if it's even worth doing?

so my advice for helping this take off is to have a lot of friends post to it quickly after you put it up and commit to following through, because i've never seen a meme like this get a lot of toplevels and that's a shame

on the other hand, if it looks lively people are more likely to try out something new

what other settings do you think might lend themselves to recreating the vibe of that meme?

any meme can if you actually put the requirements in the top level. food stuff is good. coffee stuff. any place that's a setting that you can be 'established' in. tfln shows that texting can as well. honestly, any meme out there can have 'make a comment in your top level with an opening setting, do not leave a blank top level'.

one of the few reasons that a lot of people dislike leaving top level open starts is the lack of options, which can always be gotten around by adding a secondary/third (whatever number) option of wildcard in the bottom. if you put up one starter, it limits your options. if you put up multiple, then you get 'complaints' (read petty bitching) about how much scrolling someone has to do to get past all the options in a meme, forgetting that that's exactly how all event posts are in games, and that this is a reading/writing hobby, so please define too much to me.

ranty. sorry. basically, just make any meme a 'post a top level comment with reminder blank will be deleted' memes. the world is your oyster.

unfortunately, a lot of people, particularly in bs, are lazy af and want to do as little as possible, so any of those memes are likely not to get as much play.

Have you ever reused a starter that never got replied to? If it was dropped two comments in, would you reuse it? If so, how long would you wait before reusing it?

if you write long, detailed starters to establish a scene, would you expect matching lengths in a reply?

what are the things you look for in a starter? what makes it good for you?

Yup! I've done it a few times. I've reused starters on the same meme before, when it was clear the first use wasn't getting a reply. I don't think of it as any different as posting a top-level and getting multiple tag ins.

Starters and early tags are, and probably should be, longer as scenes are established and things are hashed out. That said, if I write a massive multi-paragraph fat starter and I get a two-sentence reply, I don't care as long as it engages with me meaningfully.

Starters need hooks. Details aren't enough- they have a reason to interact.

Sometimes I wonder if I'm the weird one for not really caring when a game I join, no matter how I enjoy it, implodes on itself due to any reason. I've met people who still say they have trauma from jgk implosion or have people act like losing a game means they lose a part of themselves and all I can think of is they can always join another game.

I feel the same way about threads ending or losing long-term rp partners to other fandoms or fallouts. Maybe I've just been rping too long or I've been in too many games, but it just feels like these are things you just expect to happen and go ahead and enjoy the next thing.

I started a somewhat slower meme thread against a stranger using a character that is somewhat new to me. Since the start of that thread, I've gotten what I think is a better handle on the thread via some faster stuff/reviewing/metadumping/etc, and I think I would have aimed the thread in a different direction if I had the grasp on the character that I do now before.

In this situation, would you stick to the same thread just for practice to try and challenge yourself to turn things around into what would make more sense icly for your own character, or would you ask to start a new one? I'm undecided myself.

fwiw I do believe the other person has been playing their own character longer than I have and seems to have a solid grasp on their character from the start, it's a completely and 100% my-own-character thing, which is why I wonder if i shouldn't just stick with it since it's me that has to make adjustments and not them.

opinions wanted! a plurk friend who i am not especially tight with but who seems nice oocly has fallen into a bit of a cycle: she hyperfixates on a canon for a few weeks, ignoring rp, then tags into 4-5 tdms simultaneously with a character from her new series of choice, apps them in, is active for 1-2 weeks, finds a new video game and ignores rp, idling out, tdms with a new character...

increasingly, people have stopped tagging her, because they don't think she'll stick around games long enough for cr. it's making her feel pretty bad about herself, by the looks of it, and she's increasingly started asking on plurk why she's not getting any traction.

would you give her an honest answer, or would you stay out of it? i feel bad for her, but i also don't know if being frank with her wouldn't just make her feel worse.

i would be frank with her, but in a pp. i find that people feel more defensive or piled on when it happens in an open forum. so something like, "hey, (name), i'm sending this privately because i don't want to come across as if i'm criticizing you or opening up to public comment unless you decide to open it yourself. in terms of what you're not getting traction, feel free to ask others about this, but i feel it stems from your inability to follow through on any specific canon or character. so much so that it's become a routine pattern for you to get really excited (rightfully so) over a canon, get a character, get a good feel for them, hype yourself up for playing, test them around, but as soon as another canon comes along you're interested in, you drop everything to do with that first one. or the second. or eighth. it's hard for someone like myself to get excited about someone apping in someone that i know is going to be gone before any good cr can be established. it feels like a waste of time.

what i think this means is that either you need to rein yourself in over how much you extend yourself in the rp world in terms of picking up canons and characters, OR, maybe stick to psls or memes until you find someone that makes you want to stick. because games are full of groups of people that want to play with each other. and as much as someone might really want to play with you, they know it's going to be a fleeting thing, and it makes people less likely to want to keep trying when it's happened to them personally six times.

i'm saying this privately because i don't want to make it seem like it's okay to dogpile onto a question, but i also really don't want to make you feel bad. you're welcome to ask if this specifically is the problem people have to verify yourself, but as for myself, this is why i and a few others have a harder time getting interested in your interest checks."

weird habit of mine, wondering if anyone else does this. sometimes i write little stories about past games i've been in, just exploring different scenarios within the game's setting or using the relationships that happened there. it's 100% for my eyes only, i'd never show anybody else, i just miss some of my games and especially when i've lost contact with the other players it's fun to revisit them like this.
