Makin' my blorbos smooch is what gets me through the hard times

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.
Do not solicit money, Dreamwidth points, or other currency unless you are offering a good or service in return.

rp question re: starters

(Anonymous) 2024-11-10 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you ever reused a starter that never got replied to? If it was dropped two comments in, would you reuse it? If so, how long would you wait before reusing it?

if you write long, detailed starters to establish a scene, would you expect matching lengths in a reply?

what are the things you look for in a starter? what makes it good for you?

Yup! I've done it a few times. I've reused starters on the same meme before, when it was clear the first use wasn't getting a reply. I don't think of it as any different as posting a top-level and getting multiple tag ins.

Starters and early tags are, and probably should be, longer as scenes are established and things are hashed out. That said, if I write a massive multi-paragraph fat starter and I get a two-sentence reply, I don't care as long as it engages with me meaningfully.

Starters need hooks. Details aren't enough- they have a reason to interact.

- never reused.

- i generally write with people who suit my style, so while i wouldn't expect a like-for-like match, i know i'm highly likely to get a great tag back that covers all the bases we need to move the thread forward. some people achieve that in 200 words, some in 600. i don't hold people to a wordcount.

- i look for dynamism, an easy way to plunge in medias res: scenery setup and any historical/political context, basic coverage of what led my character to their current (un)fortunate events, and most importantly, how they're engaging the other character. if it's impossible to get 3/3, at least give me a location and what our characters are doing, together - don't skip the hook.

- sort of? i use the same idea for multiple people but i change it up per person. not exact reuse but the idea starts similarly. (for example, they all might be about meeting for the first time during a heist. i'd change up how it starts for each person but the basic premise is the same.)

- no, but i do expect it to have some dialogue AND introspection/action. if it's just one dialogue line i might respond but i might also just drop them.

- something that has an action i can grab.

never reused one in its entirety tbh. diff people/diff vibes = different ideas, even with the same character.

i'll take bits if i really liked one, but only if the other thread got dropped early and we didn't get to see it through.

Confession time... I wrote a starter on a meme and I was really excited for the thread but I didn't get a tag back for like a week and I was pretty disappointed, so I used the same starter in a psl with a friend and hit it off.

The day after I started the psl, the original player finally tagged me back with a great reply, but their response was so similar to the psl direction that I just dropped the thread since I didn't want to play it out twice.

You were a day too late! I'm sorry!

this is exactly why I never believe anyone who says "two cakes!" about having multiple threads with similar content. there's always going to be one you prefer less.

this sounds like a personal problem tbh

both you and op suck jsyk

yes it does actually suck to find out you're the second cake and get dropped after being told that they're happy to do two threads

we're all sorry that happened to you

I dunno anon, da here but I wouldn't have dropped the other thread because I bank on dialogue and interactions being different even if the overall plans stay the same. It's always two cakes for me.

Yikes, this makes you sound petty as hell. A week isn't that long

da

(Anonymous) 2024-11-11 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
eh, honestly depends person to person. a week is a bit long for me too, and i'm not sure i'd continue a thread with a perfect stranger who didn't communicate they were experiencing a one-week delay oocly at that point either. for other people, a week's wait would be absolutely fine.

there are generally two types of players on bkst: those who treat memes as a lowest-priority avenue, and those who exclusively play on memes or who want to play on memes in short, concentrated bursts. ime, speed expectations are challenging to reconcile, so it's better to cut a thread short early on, when you realize you're not a match for each other, than to drag it out and incrementally resent your thread partner because you feel delayed or pressured to tag faster. in this case, sounds as if op had a pick between playing the same thread at their preferred speed and a slower one, to boot.

You hit the nail on the head. I accept responsibility that it was a shitty thing to do (which is why I called this a confession and not a brag of how morally upstanding I am), but taking a week for the first tag of a thread with no ooc communication didn't bode well for me.

lol i wonder if i was the other person in question. ftr this happened to me, i was too slow to tag back, and did see that they reused the same starter and ran with it. at the time my thoughts were "oh that's fair."

don't let other anons make you feel bad, it's whatever in the end.

(Anonymous) 2024-11-11 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
fwiw this happened awhile ago and I did it in a locked community so the original person didn't see it.

I'd rather come across as flaky than make them feel like I preferred to play the same scenario with a different player, when really the issue was that our paces seemed to not line up.

Re: rp question re: starters

(Anonymous) 2024-11-11 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
No I've never reused although I feel like a lot of starters can feel the same if you're in a similar prompt.

I feel like my starters are always longer than what my tagging will be after that because I'm setting a scene and why my character is there, so usually I'll give like a longer starter, and then end up with 2-3 paragraphs (not necessarily long ones) for tags from there. But if I give that and someone replies with 2 sentences, I'll drop the thread because our styles don't match.

Giving a good sense of setting and answering maybe some basic thoughts to start us off like why they are in this scene, what their thoughts are about it, where they are, etc. Maybe a who, what, when, how, where sort of thing.

not the whole thing word-for-word, but if a starter i thought was pretty good gets one of those weird passive-aggressive shut down responses, i'll make a note to re-use parts of the premise and/or any turns of phrase i thought were cool with someone else.

maybe i just like the reassurance that it actually was a good tag, but there's something satisfying about getting a nice juicy thread out of something someone went out of their way to turn their nose up at.

length isn't as much of a big deal for me usually, but if i put a lot of effort into a starter and get a 2-3 line response that doesn't actually engage with anything i set up, i take that as a sign of disinterest and/or style mismatch and move on.
