Honest question, would it bother people if someone played a character from a BL canon as bi/pan when their specific sexuality isn't elaborated on? Beyond the fact that they're from the canon they are. I've been seeing most characters from BL canons be played as gay obviously, but I'm considering picking one up and I'm admittedly just really used to playing characters as bi/pan because I like to keep cr options open more than explicitly seeking out m/f or anything. I'm just wondering if that would be weird or make other players uncomfortable.

If they're in a central pairing for the canon? Probably. If they're a side character, maybe less so. You're not going to help your case if you conflate CR and shipping though

rp is for exploration and if you wanna explore this character's sexuality more power to you. the people that would make it a problem aren't folks you wanna play with. it's not weird, and if it makes people uncomfortable, it might be because they have something to think about in themselves, not because you did anything bad, weird, or wrong.

play what makes you happy.

I think a lot of this will depend on the player's approach and you sound like you'd be thoughtful about it and are aware of what the pitfalls might be, since you're asking here. Be forthright about what you want and kind to others, and I think you'll be fine.

imo it depends on the canon/character. there are some where bi/pan would be a totally valid reading and then others where it really wouldn't be.

i agreed with the anon above that it may depend on the character since some of them are very strongly coded. that said, if the sexuality truly is never specified, i don't think you'll find much trouble around here except for maybe two very crazy people, but that applies to every rp choice ever. ngl this kinda sounds like a hang-up you brought from twitter. what bl canons do people even play from nowadays besides heartstopper? and i mean actual bl, not gacha with fanservice

bl oneshots aren't really that deep, anon

so long as the character canonically isn't like "yeah, i would never get freaky with the opposite sex," i don't think there's any problem given you approach it with sensitivity and aren't just being an obvious homophobe/looking for an excuse to write your hot gay blorbo as exclusively straight. sexuality is nebulous and the characters are fake anyway.

Did this 10 years ago in a game and it was absolutely the right thing for me and the character, got some great threads on all fronts and glad I didn't shut those doors needlessly. No drama came of it at all.

It reaaally depends on the character tbh, but I do play one of my BL protags as bi because he's from an omegaverse manga so technically the gender of their partner is based on being a/b/o instead.

a lot of my characters are from BL canons and i play the majority of them as bi/pan to open up the potential for cr. (there are a couple who i can't play as anything but gay given their reactions to certain things, but they're rare.) it can get you some interesting cr and all that, and ultimately we are here to mash our dolls together.

no, i don’t think it’s a problem.

this is just my opinion, but i think it does depend on the character and the canon. i’ve played a few characters from bl canons, and some of them i play strictly gay where others i’m a little more loosey-goosey on. for me, it depends on how explicit the actual story itself gets about their sexuality. for example, in togainu no chi, there’s a whole section about how keisuke dated a woman in the past but was unable to sleep with her because he was too busy thinking about akira. something like that would make me more hesitant and wary to start writing them as bi/pan in similar relationships (at least not without addressing that same problem). but there are plenty of bl canons where the characters’ interactions with other genders aren’t really explicitly-stated or explored. in that case, i think you have the freedom to explore the character as you see fit

this is also me thinking mostly about game rp. i don’t mind what people rp on memes/in psls either way.
