Just a random thought I had tonight and I want to know if it sounds completely bonkers or could actually work. What would you all think of a Redwall game where characters get AU'd into species from the books and translate their backstory into something that would work for the canon? For those who don't know, Redwall was a book series with anthropomorphic animals set in a medieval style world. Usual book set up was that the good guys at the Abbey made up of species like mice, otters, squirrels and the like had to defeat the big bad who led a horde of vermin made up of rats, ferrets, stoats, and weasels. There were a lot of species that would show up only once or twice in the series like wildcats, bats, and wolverines.

I know such a game would already be quite niche, so I don't expect it'd be very large, but I feel like even a small game could be quite plot-heavy and work if the players are active.

The balance of SOL vs. action might be a little hard since I feel like a lot of games naturally drift towards SOL eventually. My other concern, which stems from my days playing Redwall forum RPs (yeah, I'm old), is that everyone would want their character to be the best and most awesome species, so there'd be some subtle powergaming like 4 badger apps and only one hedgehog one. I'm thinking maybe temporarily closing apps to a specific species might help curb that if the balance is getting too tipped in one direction.

Thoughts? Tips? Questions? Concerns?

So I've got Jill Stingray here, protagonist of the indie bartender simulation game VA-11 HALL-A and I'm looking to roleplay.

The first thing I'm seeking out is castmates. No idea how rare they are/if they even exist period but man would I die to play with any character from the game. Gillian, Dana, Dorothy, Sei, Stella, Kim etc. I'd even take a Donovan because can you imagine Donovan here?

The second is... I don't know how to articulate this but just RP in general? I currently play Jill on memes and I've got an open post over here set at the VA-11 Hall-A bar in Glitch City (the primary setting of her canon) with an option for just general "around Glitch City" scenes. I'm very open to crosscanon and have no super huge preference on types of characters though it's worth noting that characters from sci-fi/cyberpunk (BOY DO I LOVE CYBERPUNK) settings will work best. Fine with any medium and OCs, Canons, and Canon OCs.

Looking to play a scene where a girl who's on the curvaceous or heavy side ends up with a guy who teases her for her appearance, calls her fat, calls great attention to the size of her ass or chest, lots of dirty talk and degrading language, etc. etc. She finds it humiliating but the sex is bomb, and maybe she has to take it for some reason - college student saving grades, a mom doing it for the sake of her kid, someone about to get fired saving their job, some kind of blackmail like that though it's not mandatory - but she finds herself more and more getting off on being called horrible things.

Hooky tags without making your character seem too volatile?

It's been a long time since I've RPed, though I've written the whole time and I think I'm a pretty good writer. A problem with the genre I've been having is that I know it is important to make sure that each tag gives the other player a hook or something interesting to do in response.

But sometimes I've been feeling like that means that the character is just doing too much. Maybe this is because some of the people I've been roleplaying with haven't been very good at moving the narrative along in their tags, but I feel like my character is like, coming to realizations/reacting strongly/doing something engaging so frequently that I worry that he just seems excessively volatile as a person.

Everything is consistent with what I feel is his characterization and the situations he's found himself in is intense--just like, what takes a couple tags to get to would take me thousands of words in a fic.

Am I overthinking this? How do y'all think about pacing in RP?

I think you're probably overthinking it a bit too much, but it's just as likely to be a culmination of factors, the most prominent of which you've already mentioned — the fact that some of the people you've been playing against haven't been very good at moving the narrative along in their tags. That said! Whilst there are RPers who aren't very good at this at all, there's also, based on the fact that you've said 'important to make sure that each tag gives the other player a hook or something interesting to do in response', the possibility that you're trying to do too much each and every tag.

The question you might need to ask yourself is: are the people you're playing against bad at moving the scene on or are they not moving it on enough for you each tag? If it's the latter, then there's probably a little more balance to be struck.

Without seeing your threads or your writing, it's hard to give an entirely accurate read on the issue you're encountering but if you're in a game, it might be worth opening OOC communication to a couple of players and ask their perspective on it (or if you've memed/PSLed with some people you're comfortable opening OOC communication with).

Personally, I find it can be a little hit and miss and I know I don't always get the balance right, but it also depends on who I'm playing against. Some RPers require more handholding to move things along, others don't and it's a delight when you end up playing with someone you just click with in terms of pacing (and writing in general), but it's not something that has a 'one size fits all' answer to it by any stretch of the imagination.
