solution: redesigns that give everyone bootyshorts

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

i know this isn't very helpful, but the truth is that you'll never please 100% of your playerbase with the way you decide to set things up. the best way to go about it is to design a game you personally would enjoy, and the people who would also enjoy that will find their way to you. keep an ear out for player input, listen for solid suggestions you agree with and can incorporate, but don't let it change the shape of the game you want to run. games that create something 20 different voices told them to build are never very sturdy or fun to run.

but all that said, i think there is always a lot of potential in a set up like this, and i hope it goes well for you!

Oh, absolutely! The game came about as an idea for stuff I felt was lacking in games I looked at, and what I do enjoy in games that are basically scifi space cowboys. I'm not looking to create the next big game, I'd be happy with 5 other people to play with.

Thank you for the reminder and good luck, though!

thank you for this. i've been burned too many times by small games that i was having fun in but that the mods shut down unexpectedly because they were discouraged it didn't become huge and popular overnight.

so like the other anon said, you're never going to please everyone but i think that's ultimately because you have two types of players. missions could work one of two ways: either you come up with what happens on each planet and give that to the group, which works best with your more passive players who don't want to make waves / are too timid or passive aggressive to say what they want but can feel like railroading your players who make and voice their own ideas. Or you give some general idea of how the planet is and let more active players develop their own plot maybe giving input on outcomes or what they ultimately find (more like say a DM at a tabletop game) but if you have players more like the first case means nothing will ever get done).

so it depends on the players you recruit and how willing they are to develop their own plots what works best and is the most reasonable option for you
