Like the IJ thread, does anyone have general tips for getting into Tumblr RP from DWRP?

The RP scene there is just so much more active that I'm willing to try going along with whatever standards they have there, but I'm having trouble figuring it out. How to tag things so people see them (both what tags to use for rp and how to make them show up in search, because nothing i post actually seems to show up in the search), aesthetic standards, icons, rules pages, anything else that's important.

I went to tumblr to rp for a few years because my canons of choice were more active there, so I can probably help you out some. For starters, get new xkit and rpthreadtracker - the former has an extension called editable reblogs that will help you trim your replies down to just yours and the previous reply, which most people do out of courtesy, and the latter does what it says on the tin.

For posting stuff in tags, I assume you're trying to figure out how to promo yourself/find people to rp with - this is sort of a mixed bag. You can get started by posting a promo as long as you don't use the word 'promo' anywhere in the post or tags, because tumblr will filter it. Tag it with something like 'mcu rp' or 'fe3h rp' and maybe a few other relevant fandoms and see if people follow you. You're more likely to find new people through other rpers though so maybe skin through those tags to find active rp blogs (have they posted ic posts recently? get the timestamp extension for xkit to help you check). The best way to find people after you carve out your initial niche with a few followers is through other rpers - post a promo (some people do graphics but it's become more popular to just put a few icons at the top of the post and a short message with the character you're playing and that you're looking for partners), get your followers to reblog it, see who they're following and interacting with and follow them.

the biggest hurdle you'll face is quality control - like you said, it's a lot more active, which naturally means you get a lot more weirdos in the mix you may want to avoid. A lot of blogs are 'mutuals only' meaning they only rp with people they follow or who follow them back, which I honestly recommend doing only because it's an easy way to passively filter people out without running the risk they get offended by a simple 'no thanks' and start a months-long smear campaign against you (it happened to me, and to friends of mine, but it didn't affect my ability to get threads with normal, sane people and build lasting friendships so much as it did the work of running off the nutbags for me). Reading peoples' rules pages before you follow them is a good way to get a feel for what kind of person they are. If they sound super dramatic, just don't follow them.

Aesthetics are eh, they don't necessarily matter as much as you might think. You can easily get away with just using the same 100x100 icons you use here and smalltext and be fine. We dog on borders a lot here because it looks like shit with the dw interface, but I used to add a really simple light gray 1px offset border to mine simply because it looked better with all the white space in tumblr posts, and because it was just enough to make me fit in without going to too much extra effort. Put a decent banner pic in your mobile popout and customize a theme from somebody like octomoosey and you'll be fine.

Treat rules like permissions and be up front about what you will and won't put up with. One of the nice things about tumblr rp is people really are way more honest and detailed about their preferences and stuff - take advantage of that. Most people at a minimum also have an about page with basic info about the character and maybe a 'verses' page where they list crossovers and aus they're interested in playing.

Memes are a big thing in tumblr rp but they work differently, in good and bad ways (no blank top levels!). Someone reblogs a meme post with a list of prompts, followers send the prompts, and they respond. Unfortunately these trend toward oneshot drabbles and I always had a hard time getting them to turn into actual threads, but there's no harm in asking somebody if you can continue their prompt (more successful), or in encouraging your followers to respond to your meme fills (less successful).

You can also post opens (basically a prompt anyone following can respond to) or starter calls ('like this and I'll write a starter for our characters!'). The latter works better than the former.

Since everything's in one place you'll also probably want to work out a tagging system at least to distinguish your ic posts from ooc posts and give people the opportunity to blacklist your ooc chatter, which you'll have to post occasionally for the bare minimum of communication.

If somebody's being weird at you (because it's so public, people may occasionally get butthurt for no reason and vagueblog you because you're getting more attention than them/they don't like the way you write your character/you didn't follow them), ignore them. Blocking them doesn't do shit because lol tumblr and it gives them ammo to whine more, so only use it as a last resort.

Other things vary by fandom? You hear a lot about the tumblr purity police but it really depends on where you rp and what you rp from. rp communities like my hero academia are exactly the trash fire you'd expect while something like final fantasy may give you a lot more freedom to do whatever the hell you want. Get a feel for the communities you're in and see what they are and aren't cool with and adjust accordingly or avoid if you don't feel like dealing with it. Tumblr isn't generally that much more dramatic than dreamwidth, there's just more of them so statistically there's more drama queens.

I haven't really been rping on tumblr since probably april so some things may be different now (I heard some people are putting their info on google docs and making their blogs viewable only in the dash for more privacy?), but most of this should still be solid. I don't. I don't make plans either. I look at the game premise, check out the faq, then check to make sure there's no one I might have issues with on the Taken List before I reserve.

What's the general consensus on icons for characters from an anime that also has manga counterpart? (example: sailor moon, haikyuu!!, bnha) Should all the icons be anime caps or manga caps? Is a mixture of both fine or too jarring?

possibly depends on if there's any difference between the two. the manga and anime of fma are different, so using mixed icons can cause confusion. same as using comic icons for live action shows, or live action icons for comic versions (it's one thing to use a pb if you want an la pb for a comic char, but to use the la pb confuses people and it generally means that someone's mashing the two together to play an amalgamation of both canons).

i got into a new thing because i saw a few people rping from it on memes and now i'm completely obsessed with it and so happy to have found it. part of me wants to message them just to thank them for existing and making me get into both a genre and a medium i would have never looked into otherwise, but i worry that might be creepy or just plain weird. but i'm so excited!!!

I'm not sure how they work, but they're used for anonymous critiques/comments, as far as I can tell. The person who makes one can set it to be seen only by friends or everyone. Anyone who comments on them gets a randomized username, so they're effectively anonymous, too.

anons, please i need some advice, or some ears to vent maybe

i have a few friends that are extremely spoiler-phobic and it's getting more and more frustrating trying to talk about anything fandom-related with them. it's pretty ridiculous, to the point they got upset when my other friends make a joke that referred to spoilers from ghostbusters. the original ghostbusters, a movie that came out 35 god damn years ago.

i try to be respectful of their wishes and i'm very cognizant to ask if they've seen xyz thing before talking about it. but if i haven't seen it they go out of their way to avoid talking about it, even if i don't care and have no intention to ever see xyz. ex:

me: hey i found this funny steven universe gif, i know you guys love su and have seen all the episodes, so i thought of you. i only know a little bit of su through osmosis but enough to find this funny and thought you guys would find it more funny.
them: omg but you haven't seen that episode! you shouldn't be looking! now it's ruined for you!
me: ok but i don't care about su nearly as much, so this doesn't bother me at all. can we just enjoy the funny gif for what it is? maybe you can tell me what's special about it? because i like listening to my friends be happy and talk passionately about fandom things they like even if i don't get the entire context?
them: no because we don't want our opinions to taint yours, so let's change the subject until you see every single episode and understand ALL THE CONTEXT

i've brought this up at least twice already, idk if i'm just explaining myself badly or what, but they can't seem to understand that someone else might not care about spoilers as much as they do. lately i feel like i can't talk about anything in a fun casual manner with them anymore or make jokes about things because spoilers are taken SO SERIOUSLY. and it really sucks the fun out of hanging out with them. my other friends have completely written them off and i don't want to go that route. but i don't know what to do either to help them understand someone else can still enjoy something even if they're "spoiled", or to loosen up a little about spoilers that are over three fucking decades old. i'm frustrated!

Something I've wondered for a while. How do you rec something you genuinely like, but that has a plot-critical spoiler is a massive content warning by itself? Like, a story that for the most part has bearable stuff, but that has a spoiler warning that is both important to watch without knowing anything, but that might be something that may disturb people?

I have a tiny canon I really love for its story, and outwardly it has nothing else terrible (save for violence, which is to be expected). However, there is a gigantic revelation by the end of that story for which I find myself at catch-22. Should I just give the content warning that the canon has it, and say nothing else?

I'm not sure I or others are clear on what you're asking. DW is a mostly fandom space, so if you have a character from a show/movie you like that's played by an actor you like, you'd generally play that. eg; Captain America if you're into Chris Evans or maybe Kylo Ren if you're into Adam Driver. 'Celeb faces' comes off more like you want to rpf, and that's not something that's generally done here. Not in games. You could make an OC with a celebrity PB (played by), but if you make an OC that's based on the PB actor and is rpf with the serial numbers filed off, people are going to judge.

Fellow anons, do you ever become self-conscious about how active you are in your game(s)? Like I'm pretty active since I like to participate in a lot of plots and tag out a bunch, but I worry that people might start see me as an attention hog because both IC and OOC people are talking a lot about my character right now and others might get sick of that. I know when people complain about people being "too active" it's usually just sour grapes because they're flakes that don't do much, but it's still something my mind has stupidly gotten in the groove of thinking about it a lot.

Having dealt with an annoying, "too active" player in the past, they were annoying because they had a finger in every last pie, and were a gatekeeper to a lot of plot and setting things

A new event would go up and they'd already have top levels written in the first fifteen minutes, have ten questions for the mods, and have their arc for the event planned out on plurk, including numbering their tag-outs– and people clamored to be on that list
