any suggestions for someone looking to find a new non-sex game after WSH's closure? i like atmospheric horror, historical settings are a big plus, and a plot that's more cerebral and less about strictly violence/battles. i'm not really into scifi/utopias/cyberpunk/high fantasy, so that's been making it kind of hard to find the right fit.

because i'm curious and i've been thinking about it recently

how do you prioritise your attention and energy in a game? do you prefer to try to get as much cr as you can for your character from a wide range of sources or focus on a few close relationships to strengthen them?

sometimes i find myself worrying that i'm not tagging out as much as i should even though my character has a decent circle of 10+ people they can count on which seems fairly reasonable and is as much as i can sustain. but i still feel guilty like i "should" be tagging as many new people as possible as well.

i wonder if this is just something we tell ourselves and whether it's actually true for how many people play in this hobby. thoughts?

i kind of do a month off and on, if that makes sense. like one more more focused on current cr/deepening those relationships and the next a little more focused on tagging some new people. i find it works well for me!

Starting over

Sometimes I want to come back to this community, but under a new alias. I don't have any wank on me, but I just want to apply into games while being honest of the weird things I'd love to play, and not have the baggage of whenever if I know somebody and have weird kinks, if I owe tags to X or Y player and not focusing on that, fear of if I get wank attached to my name because of someone, keeping people at arm's length, etc.

Is it better to limit communication to Dreamwidth accounts, or is it necessary to use a new plurk or even a new discord handle? Part of the reason I left is because my plurk list had become psychologically and emotionally exhausting for me, and I needed the time away to take care of myself. I'd be open to making a new one, as long as I know how to auto-block anything that is not about RP.

in games, i rely almost exclusively on ooc plotting posts (along with the occasional pm) so i think you’d probably be fine using dw accounts, too.

Just curious. Have any of you ever done a long-term personal plot for your character that would have consequences with no clear end in sight? As an example, I remember there was one in Eachdraidh where some character got cursed to tell the truth (possibly by the NPCs it's been a long time and my brain is mush) until they met very certain conditions and like six months later they were still stuck playing it out and pretty much asking anyone they could to help break it.

I've got one going on right now in a game, and while I don't want to take the easy way out and have it fixed in like a single month, I also don't want to be stuck playing this out half a year from now, and I don't want to end up dropping because I get so damn frustrated trying to fix what was broken. Anyone who's ever done one, how long did it take you to finish it to conclusion? And was it a satisfactory end or did you just kind of handwave one because it was taking so long?

As someone who played in both of Snow's games I'm not surprised that happened in Eachdraidh even though I must not have had CR with that character. The thing about Snow as a mod was that she was exceptionally hardcore with IC consequences and if she gave your character a curse with a checklist of things you had to do to get out of it, she would not budge until you did it. Even if it took a long, long time.

Unless your game is that hardcore, you can probably put a few months of reasonable effort in and no one will think twice.

1. Fantasy - 7/10, classic stuff; swords, spells, magic, dragons. it's fine. overdone in media and rp but fine. i'd love it if games went a bit harder on factions and breaking social norms with consequences in these kinds of games. maybe with more adversarial npcs who think pcs with their weird clothes and powers and slang are witches, etc. something different.
2. Sci-Fi - 10/10, preference for more fantastical with space travel, aliens, time-travel, advanced tech, etc. you can also cheese it and slip a lot of sub-generas under the sci-fi banner so there's lots of wiggle room for diversity. much easier mechanically for rp too, i think.
3. Historical - 4/10 in media, 8/10 in rp. i was never a history person, find it quite dry and boring in most presentations, but i'm starting to appreciate it more in a dwrp sense since our games have historically been oversaturated with the other three settings. i like historical eras that are more removed from modern times to make them more interesting by comparison (edo period, ancient egypt, victorian era, american wild west, etc). figuring out how to successfully integrate these things into the typical dwrp framework (should it be an AU game, should you get a magical network device even if it doesn't fit in the setting at all, etc) is what makes or breaks a lot of immersion for me.
4. Contemporary - 2/10. boring for me, will need a good supernatural twist or be very gritty to get my interest. overdone in rp.

You get a PM from a stranger asking if you want to set up a PSL (gen or shippy as you prefer). How likely are you to try it out (assuming they're happy to talk out ideas with you and not expecting you to do all the work) if:

1) they're a canonmate
2) they're crosscanon from a canon you like

4) they're crosscanon from a canon you dislike (either because it's just not for you or a canon that has hype backlash/lots of annoying players/etc)

1. Rather possible, but not as attractive to me. As much as I like my canons, I personally love the weirdness of crossovers.
2. Rather likely! It's what I love from DWRP, when it is a crossover and meeting new characters from other worlds, or AU'ing them in a world where they can interact.
3. Unless it's a canon whose premise I turn out to hate, I'm open-minded. Again, it's no different from meeting an OC, and I like learning of new canons for the most part.
4. Would not happen. In my case, it's rarely due to disliking players of a canon, but more from hating canons themselves. I would not touch The Boys with a ten foot pole, for instance.
5. Eh, possibly, depending on the OC, same as a canon I've never heard of. I'd have to know more of the OC, but if it's similar to the setting or character I have in mind, I could take it.

Of note, this doesn't mean I'd just take any request. One time, I had a stranger come to me wishing to make a massive crossover PSL with a whole story he had planned, but... well, I politely turned him down, noting that I didn't know the player nor half the canons he wanted to play, and he seemed to want someone to write a novel AT him with everything he specifically wanted me to play, rather than an RP.

Because I've seen a lot of talk about wanting "more plot" in games lately (and sometimes less plot), but that seems to mean a lot of different things.

What sorts of plot do you like to see in games?
I would like to see a plot where the characters actually have some kind of influence on the outcome. There have been too many lately where it doesn't matter if anyone participates or not it always ends when the setting's big bad organization steps in to clear it up. If none of the characters succeed in finishing the plot's objective I think it would be more fun if there were real consequences for screwing up.

When it comes to types of events. I don't mind world hopping as long as there is something to do other than only play with the setting. I do love temporary AU. Missions are fine as long as the objectives are something the characters would actively want to have happen. I think some sort of faction game could be fun where events are an 'us' vs. 'them' setup.

What are you tired of?
I am tired of these huge info dump plots that are structured like: Here is a problem, here is how you solve the problem, this is what happens after the problem is solved, and here is the beginning of a new problem for next month. I do like that there is a lot to chose from but ultimately it feels like too much and is boring. There is no drama if you know how everything is going to work out.

More specifically I am tired of music events or events where my character turns into a monster. Also parties. These are fine every now and then just to meet people but if every event your game has is a party log it gets old.

What makes a game "plot-heavy" for you?
I'm not sure that I have ever been in a plot heavy game. I guess it would be more than one event a month, a ton of backstory, mysteries to unlock.

I want to add that I don't feel I need a massively plot heavy game. I would like a game where there is room to interact with the setting or the world's characters without feeling like nothing my character does is actually going to effect anything.

anons who live alone, any tips for someone looking to get their own place and be self sufficient?

So make sure your shit is in order. Do you have a stable job with enough income to get a place on your own? Is your credit good? Even if you're renting you still have to be able to get approved and some apartments have about as strict of requirements for tenants as banks have for mortgages. If you got some issues here, definitely work on cleaning those up or you'll be wasting money on application fees to be denied. If your credit is not in good shape or doesn't exist, definitely make sure to ask what the place is going to look for when you apply. There are places that don't care what your credit looks like as long as your rental history is good and places that want a perfect credit history. At minimum you'll want to have been at your current job for at least a year before looking for a place on your own.

At your current place, do you have bills in your name? If not, expect that you'll have to pay some deposits to get utilities set up in your name and you'll need to make sure you can cover those costs. Do your research and find out how much this is going to be since you don't want to have a place all set up and ready to move in to and then not have enough to turn on the power, water, gas, etc.

Are you familiar with the neighborhoods in your town? You'll definitely want to be aware of what the good and bad parts of town are and be able to find a location that is safe while being within your price range. If you don't know, then do research and ask people you trust for opinions. Be aware that reviews online for places to rent should be taken with a grain of salt because I've noticed apartments don't get many reviews and they tend to skew negative.

Have any pets or smoke? Definitely make sure whatever place you get allows your pet and if you smoke that it isn't a non-smoking place. Not all places mention their restrictions right off. Had one place that didn't bother to mention they were non-smoking until I was signing the lease. Most places that allow pets are going to have rules and require a pet deposit. Make sure you know what those are. If you don't have pets and don't smoke no need to worry about this stuff. If you plan on getting a pet, make sure you get a place that will allow the type of pet you're considering.

Don't worry too much about having everything nicely furnished right off. Definitely make sure to set aside some money to cover buying stuff though because it's easy to forget that you need stuff like kitchen supplies or cleaning supplies because while living with another you may have shared this. Depending on how much you already got this can easily end up running you another few hundred but you can start getting the small stuff like dishes and such now.

I would usually do my best to reply to every thread I have in order, but I can't muster the brain power for some of them, while I can for the simpler ones. Do you think it'll be poorly seen if I reply to some threads only for a couple days?
