Inspired by an exchange that's often been repeated here and on wg.

How many of you have either stopped tagging someone, or didn't bother to engage with someone because they telegraphed a bitter, negative attitude?

What were the signs of this negativity?

only one person, based on the incredibly bitter, vindictive attitude they displayed on a replurk. we share a game but it's huge so they don't even know who i am, and it's better that way.

but there's been many an anon that i would avoid if i had names.

i removed this person from plurk years and years ago because they were getting so bitter about everything in their life to the point that it affected how they interacted with people oocly. their rping is fine, but oocly they were very catty and they started to become more and more mean. i felt bad removing them because clearly a lot of things in their life was hurting them but in the end i thought i did what was best for me.

so i guess if you're this person, take care of how you handle things irl that they don't bleed into the ways you interact with other rpers. it's exhausting to deal with that attitude. hopefully you've got friends to keep you on the straight and narrow who'll save you before you devolve into this terrible mess.

I've removed people from my plurk for being catty about other RPers or for constantly complaining/being miserable. One person it was because they kept making plurks dunking on another, generally harmless, player we both shared a game with. For multiple others it was because they'd make weekly "nobody likes me/roleplays with me" plurks, soak up people's desperate attempts to placate them, and then do it all again at the next opportunity. Another because they kept making plurks talking about how stupid everyone is but them.

The only people it's really been an issue with are ones that are overtly bringing it up of their own volition - I'm not reading between the lines to find negativity in their behavior. It's really just based on things that they are flat out, knowingly saying, repeatedly.

Someone once removed me first for apparently becoming too big and popular.

it's normal feel disappointed or frustrated about not getting tags but the moment you air ANY of that out, especially if it's in a passive aggressive or bitter and backhanded way, i drop your ass

i don't have time or patience anymore to be dealing with highschool level maturity. it's a tag. we're here for fun. feel your feeling and then shrug and move on and tag someone else because that's what i do. you aren't entitled to my time and energy any more than i'm entitled to your time and energy.

Funny you should link that. The first person who replied to it is the kind of ugly rper that I wouldn't want to play with. No one sees those signs in a handful of tags and anyone who claims otherwise is just a rude individual.

people aren't dumb

- nonstop complaints about other players especially in our cast
- always complaining about life but also has tons of excuses ready for not taking any initiative
- feels like people have wronged them for not catering to their desires
- says negative things about themselves and then makes it sound like they're your thoughts and waiting for you to prove them right

I talk to them first, and if they keep doing it I tell them off, and if they insist on acting like that anyway I just stop talking to them. I get negativity and sometimes I can get dark, but if they have no intention of doing something about it and insist on continuing I'll drop them.

The only things that annoy me are the people who say they are done with all their tags and I'm still waiting on a tag from them and similar sorts of attitudes that express they don't have an interest in my tags.

bonus if it's an issue of multiple tags so there isn't even the chance that a lone notif got eaten

they plurked a lot of very hostile sociopolitical takes (think smth like "all white women are shit" meant entirely earnestly) in combination with playing characters that seemed an awful lot like handy mouthpieces for their views

it just seemed like a powder keg to me. their lived experiences are valid and so are their feelings, but it felt like walking through a minefield around them so i cut contact

i generally unfollow anyone who complains too much about anything, but i actually unfriend actively hostile people.

the more someone plays up being "funnily" ultra hostile to whatever the acceptable target of the week is, the less i want them in my space.

i've dropped a few people's asses for this sort of thing before.

- they stalked how much/where other people they were threading with were tagging and then whined about those people tagging threads that weren't with them
- constantly complained about things but didn't take any steps to improve/change their situation
- blurred ooc/ic and got personally butthurt over something that another character said or did ic
- never bothered tagging out, only top-leveling, and then whined about how they weren't getting any cr/the cr they wanted
- everything was somehow always someone else's fault

they were just exhausting and toxic to be around.

Biggest sign to me is complaining for the sake of complaining.

Used to have this person my plurk while we shared a game. They would gripe about not breaking into the plot or feeling lost about what to do. Like clockwork when an event or player plot popped up, they would talk about how they had nothing to do.

I reached out to them in one plurk and tried to suggest things. Did my best to give multiple options and suggest players to message and offered myself up for help. They brushed me off to keep complaining when someone else (not in the game) came in and said how awful it sounds to be ignored. I took that as a sign of them not wanting to change. Wanting to stew in the injustice of it all. So forth.

I unfollowed them and waited for a month or two before removing them in a sweep.

It gets worse if players of this type band up together. Each time a game event goes live they post multiple plurks how the game sucks and how bored they are. Game environment gets quickly poisoned by negative circlejerk if you share CR with them.

the most annoying part is they'll end up complaining even more that they feel "left behind" or that they "can't get into" the game when they've been doing everything they can to avoid playing in it for months and making it sound as though it's the game/mod's fault for not writing good enough events. no shit you feel like you're not engaged with it if you're sitting there bitching instead of actually playing.

I know one person who did this in my old game for nearly a year, coasting through AC on their tiny clique of friends and whining every month like clockwork on plurk and discord. I don't know what they actually got out of being in the game except an outlet for their negativity.

they were obsessing over the things i was rping with other people. after i stopped engaging with them, they went on to bitch about me on plurk and anon for months
