rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

You get a PM from a stranger asking if you want to set up a PSL (gen or shippy as you prefer). How likely are you to try it out (assuming they're happy to talk out ideas with you and not expecting you to do all the work) if:

1) they're a canonmate
2) they're crosscanon from a canon you like
3) they're crosscanon from a canon you've never heard of
4) they're crosscanon from a canon you dislike (either because it's just not for you or a canon that has hype backlash/lots of annoying players/etc)
5) they're an OC

1. Rather possible, but not as attractive to me. As much as I like my canons, I personally love the weirdness of crossovers.
2. Rather likely! It's what I love from DWRP, when it is a crossover and meeting new characters from other worlds, or AU'ing them in a world where they can interact.
3. Unless it's a canon whose premise I turn out to hate, I'm open-minded. Again, it's no different from meeting an OC, and I like learning of new canons for the most part.
4. Would not happen. In my case, it's rarely due to disliking players of a canon, but more from hating canons themselves. I would not touch The Boys with a ten foot pole, for instance.
5. Eh, possibly, depending on the OC, same as a canon I've never heard of. I'd have to know more of the OC, but if it's similar to the setting or character I have in mind, I could take it.

Of note, this doesn't mean I'd just take any request. One time, I had a stranger come to me wishing to make a massive crossover PSL with a whole story he had planned, but... well, I politely turned him down, noting that I didn't know the player nor half the canons he wanted to play, and he seemed to want someone to write a novel AT him with everything he specifically wanted me to play, rather than an RP.

1 - 5) not likely, I don't do PSLs. I would politely decline.

canon alone never decides this for me. there are some terrible writers in my canon and some great writers in canons im totally blind to. i never get into a PSL before trading casual tags (either in memes or games) and seeing if both our characters and writing click— that's always what does it. are we having fun? are these characters playing off each other in an interesting way that feels like there's a lot more to do with them? are they easy to talk to/plot with ooc? these all require a yes.

as long as i'm not busy or in an rp slump, i think i'd agree to all of them. some probably more enthusiastically than others but i'm willing to give a lot a shot. what would sway me not to is knowing the player secondhand is wanky or their writing in any threads i find reading esp poorly.

I would be overjoyed if someone approached me so I'd be very likely to try out any of those. 'Canon I dislike' would be easier to tolerate than 'character I dislike'.

This. I've seen people do good things with characters from canons I didn't care for.

4. depends on the canon and why i dislike it. there are some that i refuse to look at because the art styles are ugly, and there are others with fandoms that have soured any experience for me. i am willing to give the former a go, but the latter depends on the player themselves.

I'd say yes to all of this. It's more on what the dynamic is for me than the canon.

3) possibly; i'll do my own googling to see how compatible things are, but if the stranger has reached out to me i'll presume they are at least familiar with my canon. in this case i may ask them to go a little heavier on bridging the difference and remind them i'm canon blind and encourage them to not be afraid to dig into their character so i can learn.
4) nah. i'm amendable to tagging in games because that's a community setting and we all have activity check to do but for a psl i am not going to waste my time with something i already know i don't like. nothing personal to the player, nice of them to reach out for me, but i'd rather not waste both our time.
5) same as 3, except replace googling with "i hope they have info in their journal somewhere or will answer my questions". i'll be more hesitant if they don't have info. i'll say no if they don't provide any info.

1) depends on the character and whether they'd have the dynamic with mine i'd want to play. i have plenty of canonmates i wouldn't want to touch with a ten foot pole regardless of who played them.
2) again depends on the character and if i thought it had potential to be interesting.
3) as long as i can get some info on the character that isn't some million page minutiae wiki and they sound interesting, sure.
4) unlikely. there are usually multiple reasons i don't like certain canons. the chance that the player wouldn't hit on one of them in the rp is slight.
5) unlikely unless i'm also playing an oc for it. ime people who want to rp their oc with canon characters in a psl have a high likelihood of being a self insert in it with an agenda.
