Setting Poll

(Anonymous) 2021-05-13 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
How much do you like each of these settings, either for media or RPs?

1. Fantasy (Low & High)
2. Science Fiction (Soft & Hard)
3. Historical (eras you like the most and least)
4. Contemporary (Modern. Lighthearted or gritty.)

Re: Setting Poll

1. Fantasy - 7/10, classic stuff; swords, spells, magic, dragons. it's fine. overdone in media and rp but fine. i'd love it if games went a bit harder on factions and breaking social norms with consequences in these kinds of games. maybe with more adversarial npcs who think pcs with their weird clothes and powers and slang are witches, etc. something different.
2. Sci-Fi - 10/10, preference for more fantastical with space travel, aliens, time-travel, advanced tech, etc. you can also cheese it and slip a lot of sub-generas under the sci-fi banner so there's lots of wiggle room for diversity. much easier mechanically for rp too, i think.
3. Historical - 4/10 in media, 8/10 in rp. i was never a history person, find it quite dry and boring in most presentations, but i'm starting to appreciate it more in a dwrp sense since our games have historically been oversaturated with the other three settings. i like historical eras that are more removed from modern times to make them more interesting by comparison (edo period, ancient egypt, victorian era, american wild west, etc). figuring out how to successfully integrate these things into the typical dwrp framework (should it be an AU game, should you get a magical network device even if it doesn't fit in the setting at all, etc) is what makes or breaks a lot of immersion for me.
4. Contemporary - 2/10. boring for me, will need a good supernatural twist or be very gritty to get my interest. overdone in rp.

Oddly enough, I find myself the opposite regarding history. I am a history buff, I love seeing it in media, but doesn't work for me on RP unless it's an AU with another setting entirely (kind of like the world of Strangereal for the Ace Combat series, in that it uses different nations, but mostly the same technology). It's mostly because I associate DWRP with crossovers and the fantastical, so putting them somewhere mundane doesn't do it as much for me. I can understand where you're coming from regarding this setting being rare in RP, and therefore attractive to you, though.

I heavily agree with you on sci fi and contemporary, though.

ayrt

yeah i agree with you there! especially for dwrp--even historical settings i still vastly prefer there to be some supernatural, fantastical twist in them. ancient egypt where the gods are real, edo period with a lot of l5r influence with oni and ki powers, victorian era with castles and eldritch horror, wild west with steampunk tech and lycans and cults. stuff like that is ugh chefs kiss. don't see enough of it. barely see ANY of it!

all that probably technically fits under the fantasy or sci-fi banner though. maybe a 5th poll option for "fictional history" ?

1. Fantasy - 3/10 media, 3/10 in games. I think it's been done to death.
2. 6/10 media, 3/10 games. We don't need another neon cyberpunk game.
3. Historical 9/10 media, 8/10 games. It's very seldom used and automatically gives a lot of interesting details for the setting.
Top eras are 1930s-60s, maybe the 1920s? Western, Regency, and Ancient Rome/Greece are all pretty boring to me, I feel like overexposure to those 3 has made me sick of them.
4. Modern media 9/10, games ??/10. It's too dependent on execution for me to really give a solid score one way or the other. Modern SOL in a generic neighborhood is very different from modern SOL at a hospital or university.

Fantasy: I'm not really into "classic" MMORPG/DnD-style settings, and I'm bored to death of Harry Potter ripoffs and monster hunting. But I love fantasy world history/politics/culture and interesting magic systems.

Science Fiction: I generally enjoy scifi. My preference is for near-future speculative scifi and space westerns over Star Trek, though. I admittedly love cyberpunk and steampunk, but they're so overdone... Gritty dystopian horror scifi has gotten dull, too. Post-apocalyptic survival isn't my thing, but I do like stories that are set long after the collapse of the modern world.

Historical: I love history, but 100% accurate historical settings can be hard to rp in so I prefer historical fantasy or alternate history for RP purposes. I've done a lot of PSLs set in 1860s-1930s Japan because I know that era pretty well, but anything can be fun. I'm only interested in historical AUs, though... historical jamjars tend to be kind of bland because characters don't have enough connection to the setting to really make it work as anything more than background decoration.

Contemporary: It really depends. I'm not interested in SOL, romance, school settings or horror at all. Urban fantasy is overdone but it can be interesting if there's more to it than just "a modern city with elves and vampires." Contemporary mystery/spy/heist stuff can be fun.

Why did you group urban fantasy with contemporary when there's a category for fantasy as well? The anon below you did the same thing.

IDK, I feel like most urban fantasy is closer to contemporary than it is to other types of fantasy. Most of the urban fantasy novels I've read are basically just mystery novels set in the real world with a side of vampires/demons/whatever. The fantasy aspect is usually pretty generic and underdeveloped - "all folklore creatures are real, and they're secretly living as modern humans in NYC!" Likewise, I think most historical fantasy set in the real world is more defined by its historical aspects than by its fantasy aspects.

Anyway, there are very few DWRP games that go full contemporary with no magic or powers. Outside of "coffee shop AU" memes we don't really do a lot of straight-up contemporary here. College and celeb games are big on IJ but not so much on DW.

1. 7/10. I like it well enough both in media and RP, even european fantasy, though I would like if there were more fantasy settings from other cultures. A mesoamerican fantasy setting, or a middle-eastern one, for instance, to give variety. Been less attracted to low fantasy as of late, given how grimdark it's become.
2. 10/10 media. 5/10 in rp, at least the way it is often done. I love my space operas, my cyberpunk, my space fantasy, my hard sci fi; however, I feel a lot of the science fiction genre in RP is way too simplified and overdone, such as getting the characters stuck on a single massive spaceship whose destination is not up to the players. I'd love an RP where characters can get THEIR ships, and explore anywhere THEY want, so they can customize their experience whenever if it is an utopian fantasy, a cosmic horror story, an exploration and adventure story, etc. Still, story-heavy games are rare nowadays given how much mod attention do they need, so that might explain it.
3. 9/10 in media, 3/10 in games. As noted above, I'm a massive history buff, and I love history for the sociopolitical currents, lifestyles, emotions, and movements that happen and can inspire for stories. Oddly enough, for RP, which I associate with crossovers and the fantastical, doesn't do it as much for me. Apples to oranges, so to speak.
4. 1/10. Even Urban Fantasy settings tend to be really boring for me, given the little worldbuilding and interesting lore there often is. Coffeeshop AUs are the worst, as they remove absolutely everything fascinating about a character and their world.

Just focusing on the RP side of things.

Fantasy - This one depends on the type of setting for me. I love it if there's good worldbuilding, political intrigue, magic, factions, quests, or a combination of any of the above. Fantasy can be one of my favorite settings if it has a plot that characters can impact or a world that they need to actively adjust to. Too much emphasis on set pieces kills the genre for me (as in, games where you explore and unlock new areas with pretty pictures and nice descriptions but there is nothing to actually do there). Also not fond of games that are basically just city life games with a fantasy coat of paint, or games where the main fantasy element is a god or gods that are there to explain typical DWRP tropes like character arrival and monthly events but don't do anything else. Also not fond of heavy MMO/D&D inspiration if it results in trying to shoehorn too many video game/tabletop mechanics that aren't fun to write.

Sci-Fi - I'm sick of 'stuck on a spaceship to nowhere (or functionally nowhere because a destination won't be reached until endgame)', 'desolate alien planet survival', and 'futuristic city'. Those concepts could still be done in a new and interesting way but in general I think they're overdone. Futuristic open world games where you aren't stuck in a city, virtual reality/simulation stuff, black mirror-esque dystopian sci-fi, space exploration where you can have your own crew, sci-fi mission games, alien planets with established civilizations to join, and games with changing settings (ex where you dock at a different planet or go to different time periods) all appeal to me.

Historical - Would love more of this! I love "recent" settings like the 60s-80s and historical settings that are way further back. Would love something like a Victorian setting where your characters have to blend in. Or, blending history and sci-fi, a time travel game where your character is assigned different roles to play in each new time period (iirc there was a game like this once but I'm blanking on the name).

Contemporary - Meh. I think this is the most basic setting and the one that's most likely to end up just being SOL. IJ is full of generic contemporary settings, which turns me off from playing there. I'd enjoy something like war or mafia or urban fantasy if it's done well, but generic modern day life doesn't appeal to me. Superhero is fun and I hope we get another one of those. Contemporary horror is hit or miss, spooky abandoned village and spooky city with hostile/dismissive NPCs is overdone for me.

I think you're thinking of Synodipora...god I can never remember how that's spelled. I played there briefly because of the concept but it was not executed well - having the option to either blend in or AU your character for the month was terribly confusing and they never spent enough time per event in the new space. I'd be down for another stab at the concept if it was kept to purely the infiltration/blending in time travel idea with up to 3 months in each location, but it would take a LOT of worldbuilding from the mods. I wouldn't blame anyone for not having the time and energy to maintain that level of work.
