it is the default tho. this isn't something you can have an opinion on. it's a fact that memes are for crosscanon, regardless of whether people tend to stick to castmates or not. and ota, m/f, m/m, f/f are qualifiers that, when used on memes, refer to shipping.

look at it this way: if someone put up a top-level without OTA in the title, got tagged by someone wanting crosscanon, and replied with "sorry, castmates only", everyone would look at them as a weirdo for not putting that very specific preference in the top-level.

hell, that exact scenario has been dragged on wankgate before, as well as people asking why someone would put OTA on a non-shipping meme.

people will use memes for whatever kind of rp they want, and some people can be more specific about who they want to interact with. the only thing that's a fact regarding memes is that they are a low-pressure way to rp without the constraints of a game.

but most people will assume, by default, that if you throw up a top-level in a gen meme with just your character's name and canon, that you're open to crosscanon.

because that is the default.

if you want something specific, like only castmates, you need to include that in the top-level.

are you mad people might use "ota" to indicate they're cool with crosscanon? that people might use bakerstreet exclusively for castmate interactions? or is it that people aren't being clear enough about their preferences either way?

i am someone who prefers canon on specific characters and cross-canon for others and i always make certain to specify in my top level who i want OR only tag-in to the canon characters i'm interested in. i specify so no one wastes their time.

Maybe for the very reason that many players aren't normally clear enough about their preferences? When you choose to play in a crosscanon meme, no one needs to ask "are you ok with crosscanon", which is what I see happening in other memes. It takes away that one step.

i think you're misunderstanding the point

"tagging outside their canon is the default" doesn't mean everyone has the same preference. yes obviously some people don't like tagging cross canon, and that's ok! that particular meme was created for those that do want cross canon and have trouble finding on other memes because lots of people only want castmates.

what people mean by "crosscanon is the default" is that if your top-level doesn't say you don't want X (it can be crosscanon or certain prompts or ANYTHING) then (general) your top level comes off as open to everything. that's the default in bakertreet: open.

if you aren't open to everything, if there's something you don't want to play, then you should say so on your top level. this is something we've repeating for years now. idk why everyone is so shocked. and don't give me the wank excuse, because i've seem "castmates only" used on top-levels before and nobody gave a fuck. +25 or +21 is being used a lot, too, and that saves teen players a lot of time.

the same reason we have the book character meme and like four separate texting memes serving different niches that can and often are all be covered by tfln, genius

to facilitate a hyper specific thing happening and to get people to do exclusively that

those memes are always fat flops because every meme is for tagging cross canon

ding-ding-ding! that applies to any kind of specific preference, be medium, ages, castmates, meme prompts, etc. if someone doesn't want something, we always tell them "then say so on your top level". otherwise a generic top level will be assumed to be open.
