also, a couple months ago, i hit up a player who used to rp the other half to my OP--but YEARS ago, asking if they wanted to dust him off sometime. and now we rp together!!

So this is probably the stupidest dilemma but:

Within the past couple of years or so, my real name and social media identity has become more and more entwined with my political work. I've tried to expunge any overlap between that and fandom activities, just in case. This included leaving RP for a few years. I miss the hobby but would rather proceed under a pseudonym now as opposed to my given first name, which was my original handle. However, I don't want to give up any of my previous RP account usernames because I'm so happy with them.

Would it be terribly weird to just go HI I'M [X] NOW no I was never [Y] but secretly I totally was shhh

Anons, I'd like some general advice. Lately I've been trying to do more roleplaying outside of games because the last game I was in several months ago left me pretty miserable. Whenever I try to start a PSL or a thread with someone outside of my plurklist, though, the thread is always dropped or dies after 5-10 comments. On bakerstreet it's even worse and I might not even get tagged back.

I'm getting some private advice on how to improve my writing game and how to write better hooks. I'm open to some general advice on how to write interesting top levels but I'm also curious if anyone has better advice on how to get more long-term PSLs and threads going! At this point I'm desperate for anything because it's become really discouraging for me to even look for new people to thread with if nothing's ever going to stick.

This is why I pretty much only RP with my friends. Too many people in this community are weird about communication and tagging things "late" and I find that anyone I strike up a thread with at random is bound to drop it after a month at best no matter how much I say I'm fine with slow tagbacks. If I meet someone in a game or offsite or talk to them regularly about other things, it's much easier for me to know if they'll be the type to keep things going and what kind of pace they play at.

... which doesn't really help you out, I guess, but finding new partners on this site without apping into a game is a crapshoot. You're going to get a lot of duds, that's just how people are now.

You could also try tagging into game TDMs. Players on TDMs are way more likely to tag back, at least for awhile, since they're trying to voicetest or get samples to app with. Maybe you could find some new people to play with that way? I've never had someone ask me for a psl after a thread on a TDM but it wouldn't be the craziest thing I've encountered, if you're not apping into the game they might want to keep playing with you anyway if the thread was good.

it's working fine for me. have you checked your chrome to see if it needs updating? maybe uninstall and reinstall juggler.

- warning someone they're playing with a wanker only to have them side with the wanker and turn on me, and then find someone so mysteriously grudgewanking about me or fabricating lies about me over the following days/weeks/months

- having a wank spotlight on me just because i play the same character as a wanker or have the same handle

- thinking i'm doing pretty good or pretty ok with a character only to have someone casually mention something about them or how i've been playing them that makes me question my entire characterization

I mean, I'm constantly flip-flopping between texting like a modern smartphone would, aka, autocorrect, auto caps, etc (ex.) , and texting with typos, non-proper caps which I find lends more to a voice (ex. ) What do y'all do?

Is it just me who finds these catch-all logs that span multiple months really weird?

People put new open toplevels there, but the only way you can find those in the months after the log was posted is if you have the player on plurk / thus likely already have CR.

It feels really inaccessible to just... tagging out to people.

I have so many polyam ships that I'd love to play out, but it's hard enough to coordinate playing two characters off each other, I can't even imagine how to manage with three or more. Especially since most of them are rarepairs anyway.

I've managed-ish to do threesomes twice and both times were a drama fueled nightmare. It turns out you need the same communication skills to make RP threesomes work as you do real ones and those are in short supply.

if your character is known to have a trait that would be annoying, how do you approach it? like they mock or make fun of people if they make a mistake. lie and stir drama for giggles. get in fights they start and make themselves a victim. or typical pervy character who gropes/feels people up because lol raunchy humor stuff.

do you tone it down? do you make an opt out post? barrel through and never look back?

no matter what you should have an opt out post imo. idk if they ever get used, but i always feel like it's a "better to have" type thing.

but it kind of depends on the context, to answer your question. i tend to play a lot of incendiary characters (more on the shitstirring side than anything). i think the hardest thing about it is striking that balance that keeps them reasonably ic without also just being Awful To Thread With on a constant basis. sometimes that means toning it down, sometimes it means not even starting with the trait in particular.

also, something else to keep in mind is being prepared for consequences. no one likes a character that starts shit and then flakes out or whatever when they piss off the wrong character/start something bad

I played a character through my LJ days and did all I can with that character. For almost 4 years!

I now see someone RPing that same character (which is a rare character btw) and I feel almost like... "don't touch my stuff". It's SO childish and I would never do or say anything but god damn. This feeling is irrational but strong.

there's a word for that. it sounds a little bit like highlandering. not quite, in that you and only you can/have to play it everywhere, but if you're feeling a little like you can be the only one, well... that's where it comes from.

How do you balance a character being perceptive and detail-focused without being infomoddy?
I know there's a trap a lot of players fall into when it comes to playing hyper-intelligent characters like Sherlock (just an example and not at all the particular character in question) where OOC knowledge bleeds over into IC knowledge when there's no feasible way the character should be able to know certain information, so what's a good way to avoid this trap?

Obviously, good OOC communication is a must, but what other steps could be taken in addition to this? Would it be reasonable for said hyperintelligent character to be able to draw from anything that might have happened on the game's network, provided the entry was public?

I assume a good safety net would be to OOCly contact the other characters involved in a scene and ask them directly what your character should be able to observe in said scene, and briefly explain what their conclusion would be via train of logic, but what else?

Always keep in contact OOCly is actually the main thing you can do. Try to make sure the stuff your character "just knows" or figures out is done in a way that it's fun for you and the other player, because obviously if someone has been plotting something for a while, it's dickish to walk in and say your character figured everything out already.

I personally would avoid using the network as a collective source of information unless plotted out with the players involved. No, it's not technically infomodding, but people don't expect someone else to be constantly looking at their posts to track their characters. This used to be more common in the past and was why the whole "private/locked 50%" trend used to be more of a thing. And while this is just my personal experience: everyone I know who does this with their character is usually kind of an asshole about it (ie will insist it's okay for their character to infomod a conversation had on the network between two unrelated characters ten months ago that they read and still remember for some reason because it was public), and I find it pretty off-putting.

Also, this is something that generally helps me, but trying to keep their knowledge to things you can make a logical connection to helps a lot in making other players more comfortable. I play a character who is so smart, there is no explanation for how he figures things out, but I do so in RP because it's more fun to play that way. Save the hyper-perceptiveness for specific scenes where it'd be fun to utilize, or would help the thread/cr progress in a certain way. And don't be afraid to give them blindspots if that, too, would be more fun.

Basically my whole point here is: utilize their intelligence in a way that makes things fun to play, not just to prove your character is smart.

I love my rp partner to bits. If I hadn't met them five years ago, I doubt I'd still be in this hobby. They write beautifully, share the weight of carrying a thread forward, and make me smile every time their tags hit my inbox.

I could go on and on and on, but tl'dr? They're my rp unicorn and I feel incredibly blessed and lucky to have met someone I gel insanely well with. They're also a wonderful friend and an all around amazing person.
