Do you feel possessive of your characters?

(Anonymous) 2020-05-20 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
I played a character through my LJ days and did all I can with that character. For almost 4 years!

I now see someone RPing that same character (which is a rare character btw) and I feel almost like... "don't touch my stuff". It's SO childish and I would never do or say anything but god damn. This feeling is irrational but strong.

there's a word for that. it sounds a little bit like highlandering. not quite, in that you and only you can/have to play it everywhere, but if you're feeling a little like you can be the only one, well... that's where it comes from.

I'm the same way. If I'm really into playing a character I get sort of irritated seeing other people play them. It's an easy feeling to have even if you rationally know it's not fair.

I could go into all the factors that lead to this sort of thing but ultimately it's easy for playing a particular character to become part of your schtick or community persona. So having someone else in the same niche can feel threatening.

Not sure if there's much one can do about this feeling besides being like "don't do that" to yourself over and over.

jsyk it's not normal to feel "threatened" by someone else roleplaying a character you didn't create

no. never had this feeling because i was on the receiving end of it and it wasn't fun. always did my best to be welcoming to other players of the same character.

hell no. i'd be thrilled for the chance to play off them with the other characters i play.

nah, i'm with the other anons on this one. ran into another person playing the same character as me and they were very sweet when i pmed them to ask a question. i wish there were memes for playing with yourself (giggity) because i would love to rp against them with our characters.

given that, i've actually decided to pick up another character in the fandom so i can rp with them.

you either get excited to see someone else and talk shop with them/gush over the character, or you get all weird and angry and jealous. i'm glad to be of the former, but i used to be of the latter back when i was at a low point with my self-esteem.

yeah, sometimes. i don't mind acknowledging it tbh. it's not something i stew in and i've never felt the need to bring it up to another player, but every now and then the jealousy pangs do happen. i try to use that feeling as a motivator to work on my tags!

no, i'm good friends with a couple of other people who play the same characters and i love it because sometimes we talk shop about headcanons, etc.

Re: Do you feel possessive of your characters?

(Anonymous) 2020-05-20 12:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I really don't like talking shop with others who play my main, because I don't like a lot of the fanon about them, and there's a weird tendency by a lot of players to minimize my main's canon love interest- including being rude to people who play the LI.

I only get uncomfortable because of imposter syndrome.

I usually play obscure characters, so if I see others playing the same character, I feel an intense insecurity because my immediate instinct is that "their version is probably better than mine, and they probably understand the character more than I do", regardless of whether it's true or not. There's a milder version of this that happens to me even when there isn't someone else playing the same character, but when other players in the same game are even canon-familiar, because I worry that they'll think I'm butchering the character. This is doubly-true for characters I've played in a game long enough that they've gone through considerable character development within the game setting, to the point where they're a pretty different person than they were to start.

It's irrational, and I know this, but welcome to Imposter Syndrome.

i felt this recently with my newest character and i'm pretty sure it was a mix of insecurity and rl stress getting the better of me. some nice comments from a castmate helped with the former and financial assistance helped with the latter, and now i'm starting to feel more chill about rp again. if you (or anyone else reading this) feels this way, it would be a good idea to figure out the underlying cause, and do what you can to cope with it.

Re: Do you feel possessive of your characters?

I’m completely the opposite. If I see a character I play I immediately go to their profile to see if they’re willing to play with other characters of the same canon (who I also play). I’d give anything to see more of this character around and tag them. :C

Re: Do you feel possessive of your characters?

(Anonymous) 2020-05-20 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I am the exact opposite. I love playing with people who play the characters I do and see their own special flares/touches via rp and shipping with them if we like the same pairings.

I actually have run into people who were scared or nervous to play characters off me that I've played because they've gotten burned by highlanders. I've also experienced very insecure and possessive rpers who would talk badly behind my back because we simply played the same character and maybe had a few mutual rp friends or connections with each other.

I don't think I'm possessive of my characters? But I do weirdly dislike chatting about said character with another player who writes them, even if I like that player and think they're doing a good job. It feels like "same hat" but in a boring way.

Not sure if that counts.

I've been on here since the LJ days, for nearly a decade. I've played characters for three, four and six years respectively. At no point have I ever deluded myself into thinking I own the character and other people shouldn't "touch my stuff". Sometimes I'm happy when I see someone else playing from an obscure source that I am, sometimes I shrug and move on, sometimes I PM'd them to ask for tips on where to get icons, one time I shared scans of the manga with the other player, but mostly it's the shrug reaction, tbh. It's just not important.

No. I do feel more critical of people who play the characters I play, in so far as I feel myself judging how they write them. Not because I don't want them to, just because I obviously have a way of doing it that I think is the right way.

That said, if I like the way someone writes a character I write it's more likely I'm just gonna want to pick up a character to play off them!

for me it's not that i feel possessive/highlandery and don't want other people playing them

i think what i get is just like weird insecurity resurgences

no character is played the same between any 2 players so there's always that compulsion to compare and contrast if i stumble across a thread and that feels Weird bc i don't want to do that

im p good at just scrolling on past or muting a plurk or w/e though

Re: Do you feel possessive of your characters?

I only feel that way when whoever is playing them is doing a really bad job and is really OOC. Like, if you're going to play a character, at least try to actually play the character.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-27 07:09 am (UTC)(link)
no and at the risk of sounding idk arrogant?? I pray nobody ever sees my interpretation of a character and starts feeling bad because of how "good" I am at them.

I play from obscure canons so I absolutely adore seeing others playing my characters. it gives me an outside perspective and a new interpretation and I've actually changed things about my portrayals because of really good points other players brought up.

I also have shit memory when it comes to canon and the other players usually don't so it helps me remember miscellaneous tidbits cough
