Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

characters' bad traits: do you play them?

kinda inspired by this talk: https://rpanons.dreamwidth.org/83455.html?thread=252250367#cmt252250367

if your character is known to have a trait that would be annoying, how do you approach it? like they mock or make fun of people if they make a mistake. lie and stir drama for giggles. get in fights they start and make themselves a victim. or typical pervy character who gropes/feels people up because lol raunchy humor stuff.

do you tone it down? do you make an opt out post? barrel through and never look back?

no matter what you should have an opt out post imo. idk if they ever get used, but i always feel like it's a "better to have" type thing.

but it kind of depends on the context, to answer your question. i tend to play a lot of incendiary characters (more on the shitstirring side than anything). i think the hardest thing about it is striking that balance that keeps them reasonably ic without also just being Awful To Thread With on a constant basis. sometimes that means toning it down, sometimes it means not even starting with the trait in particular.

also, something else to keep in mind is being prepared for consequences. no one likes a character that starts shit and then flakes out or whatever when they piss off the wrong character/start something bad

I've played assholes who would rather antagonize anyone trying to be nice to them and while it's fun in small doses, there is some mitigation needed unless you want to have nothing but negative CR. A little is fun, a lot is still sometmes fun, but all of it negative? not fun for anyone.

permissions/opt out and warnings in any plotting thread or CR meme is a start. but if the character can still form at least one or two neutral to positive connections in canon, they can do it in rp. it's just a matter of finding who they click with and being prepared that it won't be literally everybody in the game.

i've been thinking about this a bit lately because i have a character i have played and want to play again who hits people occasionally and threatens violence and mischief more regularly. she's from an anime canon that treats it sort of like amusing slapstick and sort of like an actual bad trait that the people around her let slide for various interpersonal reasons. it's the kind of thing that would be pretty offputting and unacceptable if taken realistically, though, and i lean towards realism in rp because it makes cross-medium play easier.

in the last game i played her, i toned it way down from the beginning, not necessarily because i didn't want to deal with it (the setting discouraged it and made her behave differently in a lot of other ways), but it did make things easier, i guess.

if i do play her again it is something i'd like to actually acknowledge and explore the friction of, but i think i'd have to be upfront about it, not because i think i'd need an optout or anything but because it's easy to read it as slapstick to be brushed off if you're playing from similar media and i suspect some other players wouldn't realize i wanted or was even okay with their characters actually getting mad about it or holding it against mine in the long term
