jose otero (who was at the recent preview event for fire emblem fates) claimed in IGN's nintendo voice chat that the touching is gone, but you can still invite characters to the private quarters and get the support bonus. he was apparently told this by a nintendo rep at the event.

so that just leaves what they're doing about the extra dialogue that was part of the minigame, like niles mentioning how he lost his eye.

supposedly, the localization won't have the "ability to touch various body parts to improve the relationships between the player and in-game characters," but that doesn't explain how game data size of the NA version is bigger than the JP version (the voices used in Fates-Amie take up at least 70% of the game):

what bugs me about the whole thing isn't the fact that we can't rub our poor virtual spouse's face or the gameplay bonuses

rather, it's the fact that creepy zoom-ups on a female character's bouncy boobs, butt, and crotch were deemed appropriate enough for the localization by nintendo

meanwhile rubbing a dude's hair, while weird in its own right, is apparently too lewd for the west:

if you're going to change shit because when "[you] localize a game, [you] do so in order to make it appropriate for that particular territory" then at least be consistent with your stance because the camilla cutscene is way worse compared to the weird, otaku-bait face/hair rubbing

the pandering in fates was a mistake and even japan agrees

let's hope the devs will keep the feedback in mind so they won't add any blatant husbando/waifu pandering mechanics in the next game that'll get potentially cut out in the localization

this level of salt from the fandom can't be healthy

alternate option: the next game goes even further with the otaku bait (think senran kagura, neptunia, or even criminal girls levels of fanservice, but with husbandos thrown in alongside the waifus) to the point that the game will be practically impossible to localize unless they keep the fanservice in. they'll either give up on getting it out in english or hand the game off to xseed or another publisher.

You're in luck, anon. Nintendo of Japan private listed any of their videos containing the anything about FE Amie feature including the My Castle Direct on their Youtube channel.

There's a good chance that we will never have to see the feature in another Fire Emblem game again.

How it works is that you can buy one version of the game and then purchase the other path as discounted DLC. So if you, say, buy a copy of Birthright for about 40 bucks, you'll be able to buy Conquest as DLC from eShop for 20 USD.

Considering what's going on with NoJ, I wonder how the series will do from now on sales-wise tbh. On one hand, there were people in Japan who did find the face touching weird and complained about how poor the main story is while NoJ obviously wants to wash their hands of the whole thing. On another hand, otaku throw away the most money and god forbid if you tone down on anything that panders to them.

I doubt the next game will automatically crash and burn if they don't pander as much as they did in Fates. However, IS will most likely strike a balance between the fanservice and the main story's writing in order to the otaku without losing the rest of the fandom. The marriage system is definitely there to stay, but I have no idea if we'll see the second gen system again since a lot of people in Japan weren't too crazy about the in-universe excuse for them being there in Fates.

fuck facepetting, can we talk about how shitty it is that you have to pay heaps of money to get the complete game? and that's before the oceans of dlc, which add up to about half the cost of a game all on their own.

i'm usually pretty pessimistic about the effectiveness of voting with your wallet, but i honestly can't support that nonsense by buying it.

(that and i'm super indecisive, if i ever bought one version i'd wish i'd bought the other instead)

With all the controversy surrounding Fates going on, who wants to guess how well the game will sell in the west? Will they meet Nintendo's expectations?

For reference, Awakening sold 180,000 units within its first month in the US in 2013 and then 1.9 million worldwide by 2014.

I gotta be honest with yall, I'm really over your (and other places') doomsaying about how bad Awakening was. I'm an oldschool fan and I've been around a long time and it was perfectly damn harmless. I mean, Kris/Chris existed before Robin and Kamui. I do understand the complaints about anybody supporting with anybody, and the multiclassing stuff made it too easy, but this whole pearl-clutching about how it panders to otaku? Fire Emblem was always an otaku game. It's up there with the Tales series. Florina was there to pander to otaku. Myrrh was there to pander to otaku. Hell, even Sylvia and Ares were there to pander to otaku.

Awakening isn't the first, get over it.

ACCORDING TO POLYGON: The Live2D models are still in and you can still invite characters to your room for conversations, but the whole Amie-esque "petting" stuff is gone.
