Topher Brink | Dollhouse

Canon point would be mid-late season two. Sometime between 2.4 and 2.12.

any particular advice you're looking for, anon?

Uh, not really? He's the opposite of my usual character, so anything would be great. I guess the two biggest worries are the Whedon-y voice and the whole...genius thing.

Respect, anon. You don't see enough Dollhouse muses out there.

There's some good canon info here (http://www.fanforum.com/f32/fran-kranz-topher-brink-appreciation-1-hes-genious-behind-all-62871813/index12.html; scroll until you reach the part about his r-prime lab profile) which summarizes a lot of his more noticeable traits from a professional perspective. I'd link you the original page, but the site seems to have broken, so this old fanforum will have to do.

Big things I remember about him:

- movement. the man never stands still. He fidgets, fiddles with any of the miscellaneous toys and doodads he keeps on his desk, and he's generally just always moving around. this is a man who reacts very physically to almost any situation, good or bad.

- speech. brush up on your nerd culture, because every other sentence is laden with pop culture references. he's got a star trek reference tattooed on his ankle. the man is a hardcore nerd and he doesn't make any attempt to hide it. he's got a very good grasp of technical lingo but he also doesn't mind resorting to buffy-speak (you know, when explaining things gets all explaining-y). since he goes so fast he's prone to stammering here and there.

- confidence. he's VERY content in his knowledge, prowess, and indispensability in the eyes of rossum's higher-ups. he gets away with quipping at the head of security and even adelle herself without a lot of serious repercussions. while he's got the skittish nerd thing going for him, he also has no problem asserting himself around people he's familiar with, like adelle. that being said, he becomes extremely worried about his self-preservation in a physical fight.

- morality. since you're taking him in S2 where most of his moral conflict begins, he's starting to fracture a little around the edges. he's realizing his knowledge might not be such a gift since it facilitates the mindwiping and enslavement of hundreds of people, potentially millions, and the longer that self-doubt goes on the more his confident nerd persona starts to crumble. obviously by the time the epitaphs roll around we see the extent of that self-loathing along with the mental trauma inflicted by rossum. as S2 goes on Topher becomes more self-aware at just how morally despicable a lot of his actions are. he's no longer comfortable to sit back and pretend this is all a cool science experiment, or that what the dollhouse does is justified. and the more he thinks about it, the more it disturbs him.

that's all I remember for now. I'm very tired so I hope this is halfway coherent. anyway props to you anon and good luck topher brink-ing!

Not particularly sure on canon point, give me your general advice! Common things you see messed up by fandom would be particularly helpful, and if someone happens to have any side-material resources that'd be cool too since I know there's a lot of info in the light novels!

Classic Doctors around NuWho players

(Anonymous) 2016-01-30 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I play a Classic Doctor and I'm never sure how to engage with the NuWho companions in my game without doing the whole cutesy 'does the kissing start to happen a lot' routine (which imo is a genre issue rather than a character issue - I don't think the Classic Doctor is asexual). But at the same time, the character is very different, and I like playing with that culture shock.

I think what I'm asking is - how can I shock people with how different my retro Doctor is without being tedious or coming off like I'm bashing NuWho?

Re: Classic Doctors around NuWho players

(Anonymous) 2016-01-30 04:38 pm (UTC)(link)
why would you want to shock people with how different the retro Doctor is to begin with? you should stop thinking of it as less of a Classic/New distinction and more of a different Doctors distinction. like, if you're playing Six then of course there's going to be some tension between Six & Rose because her Doctors are very different from him....but there also would be tension between Six & Tegan or Six & Victoria because again, very different Doctors. and with some New Who companions, there's less of that culture shock to begin with: like, I'd imagine a season 9 Clara would be super chill with a Classic Doctor (because s9 Capaldi has more Classic Doctor traits) and conversely, Grace Holloway would be super chill with a New Doctor

just stop thinking of series differences and play the Doctor like he's the Doctor. Points of identification will inevitably pop up because the Daleks, the Time Lords, and the Cybermen have been around for fucking ever. If you want to do any culture shock sort of thing, focusing on one of those crossover aspects might be your best bet. like, for example, how would this Doctor react to the idea of the Time War or the thought of the current state of UNIT?

Having played a nuWho companion off a classic Doctor for a few years now, this is such a fun dynamic. For starters, Gallifrey still exists and the Doctor is certainly acting like he doesn't know anything bad is ever going to happen to it. Having to preserve the timeline and straight-face it every time the Doctor talks about home was always a good source of fun.

In a way, it is just a 'you're not my Doctor' clash, but there's a bigger divide between old and new Doctors. I'd have my character start to talk about how people need to back down, the Doctor is a force to be reckoned with and can clear out whole armies by himself, and the Doc is looking at my char like he just grew a second head. 'That's not me...is it?'

Older Who stories that would shock current companions? Deadly Assassin, Pyramid of Mars, GENESIS is the whopper. You could have wiped out the Daleks at their source and you didn't? Cue questions about whether or not Nine or Ten would have made the same choice. There's also some fun to be had with comparing Jaime McCrimmon to Donna Noble.

I think you could definitely make the claim that certain Doctors were fairly close to asexual, but definitely not all of him. The only ones I'd really consider that a huge possibility with are Two, possibly Five, and Seven. One definitely got a leg over on someone (Thank God Looming isn't canon), Three could be flirtatious, but was generally pretty fatherly, Four was definitely bumping uglies with Romana, Six had his (rare) moments, Eight was... Eight. And then you get everyone that isn't the War Doctor.

Matt Smith says that he thinks the Eleventh Doctor was asexual and never did more than kiss, but I think Moffat disagrees.

That said... It depends on which Doctor you're playing! One thing you could do and have a lot of fun with is more of a focus on his psychic abilities. Some of the older Doctors, particularly Four and Five, tended to lean on those fairly heavily at times. Four in particular. No need for psychic paper when you can just look someone in the eyes and convince them of whatever you wanted.

You could also go with a lessened reliance on the sonic screwdriver. Three used it a lot, but Four, Six, and Seven rarely used theirs, and Five never bothered at all.

What could also be fun is focusing on the fact that the earlier Doctors rely a lot less on their reputation. You couldn't really have one of them go "And I have no plan! Isn't that the scariest thing of all?", especially when some of them were so fond of making plans and manipulating people. Oh, sure, they're still insanely arrogant, but they're used to "I'm the Doctor" meaning less than "I'm a Time Lord."

Characters who are very strongly attached to their love interest at shipping/smut games

(Anonymous) 2016-01-30 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I love my character's canon ship to death. I'd play it all day every day if I could.

But unfortunately no one plays his love interest that I've seen, and I've tried to find someone ATP/bakerstreet to no avail for months now, so I've given up on finding anyone to play her. I'm still really in the mood for shippy/smutty stuff with this character, though, and have been considering a few games.

However, he's really loyal and dedicated to his canon girlfriend. He literally died for her and the end of the canon ultimately presented their relationship as unbreakable true love. I don't want to erase the canon love interest (because, like I said, I do really love the ship) or have him behave OOCly, but I also don't want him to be a guilty mopey sadsack because that's no fun. I'm not too fond of memes, and the character is obscure enough that my top levels pretty much never get replies and my tag-outs have a pretty poor response rate, too.

Am I just out of luck with this particular character or has anyone made something like this work?

You might be out of luck, but it also depends on how flexible you're willing to be with them. Is there an earlier canon point where they weren't as obsessed with her? Is there a point in time you can take him from where his romantic interests aren't all about her? Are you willing to, if you bring him into a game, work around the fact that you may not get a canon love interest and therefore might have to deal with "YOU'RE SO OOC BECAUSE X LOVES Y AND OMG" from ignorant assholes who can't understand needing to bend icness to fit in to certain places if you happen to maybe play out him moving on or understanding that game =/= home and have him embrace that?

Like, it'd be great if you could get your canon ship mate, but games are one of the places that crosscanon pairings are usually ok. And if you play a char where it's obscure enough that the idea of you getting a castmate or your char's partner coming in is so low, I don't really think anyone could fault you for moving past that, particularly in a smut/shipping game. There's kind of a lot more leeway for things like that in smut games, but even then, you'll find some random person that'll have a bug up their butt if you don't play out x exactly as their canon portrays. I was brought up on WG not too long ago for not playing out my canon pairing in a smut game, even though both myself and the player of the love interest had no love for the ship and had agreed not to bother playing it. Outside parties are always going to be your weirdest judges, but, if you feel like having something like that pointed out is something you can deal with and not get upset by it, then by all means, app them in. The idea that someone's going to shit on you for shipping your character in a shipping game with their not partner when their partner's not in game is something I can totally understand, but I also don't think you should worry about it. Smut games are generally more tolerable, both in terms of shipping and orientation.

what games are you considering, anon? because shipping/sex games are usually more willing to overlook this kind of thing for the sake of the premise.

Have him fall for someone who is a lot like his canon girlfriend.

I've seen this work before, anon. You're basically going to have to hope that your character is practical enough to know they need to fit in in the short term if they want any hope of reuniting in the long term. Most of the smut games have some kind of a mechanic that makes it a required thing, so especially if you go for one of those, your character will have to be able to do a little rationalizing/separating physical sex from the emotional attachment they have to their partners.

Not all characters will really work out great for this. You'll just have to figure out if your character can swing it.

Canon point would be either shortly before or right in the middle of the Nagoya Airport showdown. Will most likely LCW a lot.
