yeah, japan is japan. when I played the localized version of path of radiance Soren didn't come off as an uke stereotype at all. however when I played Aawakening I knew immediately from the first Tharja support with the protag what she was about. same with Severa. same with Nowi.

That's because, believe it or not, Awakening is the least rewritten game in the entire series. the only ones they got extreme on were Henry (way more grimdarque originally), Nowi (obvious reasons), and Gregor (he wasn't originally second-language, he was originally the stereotype of a bumbling idiot who doesn't know the word "I" or "me").

All the previous games had a lot more rewriting done to them. In Soren's case, to make him less "feminine." Same for Eliwood. In Ike's case, to make him less obviously gay (which he absolutely, undebateably was in the Japanese). All the games removed the incest stuff. Raven and Lucius' pretty-much-text was toned down to subtext easy enough for people determined to ship them with women to ignore. Lyn was made a lot more competent at being a marquess' daughter in the English version to accompany her age-up; in the Japanese she was very obviously a country girl in over her head who didn't really want to be there.

Awakening did a lot of rewriting in the seriousness department; the translation team added a lot of silly shit to "lighten up" the game because they thought it took itself too seriously, but it didn't really touch the characters much. Pretty much every other Fire Emblem loc has.
