fates was already more popular with fujoshi than otaku, and fujoshi pandering can be done in ways that're less likely to make people complain

Aren't fujoshi still otaku though, just a different kind from the basement-dwelling dude who drools over their fictional waifus?

Re: FIRE EMBLEM

do you really think the japanese video game industry is ready to cater to mainly fujoshi in a now-"mainstream" srpg game like fire emblem at the risk of the straight dude fanbase breaking down into tears

yeah, niles being one of m!corrin's love interests was most likely the devs testing the waters with the fujoshi fanbase and i imagine we'll see more gay and bi male love interests in future games. however, i doubt that most of the fanservice in future games will become heavy on fujoshi pandering at the expense of catering to their straight dude audience.

A) most RPGs these days cater to fujoshi, honestly.

B) kozaki was explicitly told to make sure the guys were attractive to female fans, and he said he had a few designs rejected because they weren't considered appealing enough, especially when it came to the royals

DA

Even seiyuu in the game were often cast to cater to fangirls and makr them wet their panties. That certainly includes fujoshi, since many of them have been in BL or at least have played slashable roles. So yeah, it's increasingly hard to deny that the devs weren't planning to at least attract some female fans, since they went out of the way to create male characters that pandered to what women like.

What's a fujoshi, anyway?

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2016-02-01 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
A fujoshi, or "rotten woman," refers to a woman who's a huge fan of the Boy's Love/Yaoi genre. Male BL fans are referred to as fudanshi.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2016-02-01 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
A shitty way to refer to women who like gay ships in Japan. It literally means "rotten/trash woman."

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2016-02-02 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
the term was invented by women, it's meant to be self-depreciative. it's a stupid term but not some slur invented against women.

and it's meant for women who get really into male/male ships. pushing them into seme/uke roles, drawing/writing/fantasizing about a lot of porn of them, especially fetishistic stuff (rape, tentacles, guro etc), buying merchandising of them just to shove them together or take creepshots, etc.

western fandom misuses it a lot.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2016-02-02 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
and it's not like mean don't have similar terms.

but hey feminism.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
It was not fucking invented by women, pull the other one.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
it was, though? look up the history of the word sometime.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 04:18 pm (UTC)(link)
So ... why isn't there a similar term for boy otaku who get nastily into f/f? I mean hentai with tentacles penetrating women is way more popular.

Also just because it was "invented by women" doesn't mean it's not gross, it's like when one of the ~not like the other girls~ types complains about shallow bitches and sluts. Being a woman doesn't make you less of a nasty person for using those terms.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)
shrug. i'd guess because it's really rare for people to get into f/f the same way. most yuri fans have more of a fixation on purity/fluff. the stuff you're talking about is basically stand-in m/f for regular otaku that just want to see chicks getting penetrated, not yuri fans.

that's not really how it's used. you know how the west has some fans who say they need jesus/to go to church for what they're into in a joking way? it's more like that. more than a few even use it pridefully or to help find others with similar interests.

it's a stupid term but it's not some gross slur or whatever.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
In that case I really wish it'd quit getting trotted out in Fire Emblem threads because honestly, how could Niles/Corrin or whatever the hell else be honestly pandering to the dreaded fujos if it's referring to that specific subset?

there is a term for boy otaku's who get nastily into f/f. fundashi

And there is a term for girl otaku's who get nastifly into f/f. fujoshi

the west is the one that really separated them, though there is some sepration in mainstream japan. It should be noted that both terms do actually mean rotten girl/boy too.

if that isn't enough for you, they are still otaku which is...well you really don't get much lower then that there.

Link and Ganondorf looks were changed to a pretty boy and a bara to make one of the producer's wife happier about them. She's also a bit of a fujoshi herself.

only people like you think straight dudes have the power they do. companies follow the money and not much else.

Re: FIRE EMBLEM

(Anonymous) 2016-02-01 04:27 pm (UTC)(link)
so .... women have money, but straight men don't?

Re: FIRE EMBLEM

(Anonymous) 2016-02-01 04:35 pm (UTC)(link)
you're being obtuse on purpose.

no it's that otaku's (Both the he-beasts and she-beasts) spend an abhorrent amount of money and actually interact with the companies, either by emails, spending money to go to events, signings, and buy the stupid crap like nendroids and the like compared to the straight males.

like the spending gulf between the two is so vast you could imprison all of the titans and protogenoi of greek mythology of old in it. like you could probably fund all the transplants and surgeries at a couple of hospitals for a week with the amount of money they will and do spend on useless shit.

Re: FIRE EMBLEM

(Anonymous) 2016-02-01 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
the "he-beasts" spend massive amounts more money than the "she-beasts" where otaku are concerned, though. There have been whole articles written about how the anime industry is fucked specifically because they keep appealing more to male otaku, which makes their audience smaller, then they appeal more to male otaku, which makes their audience smaller again, etc. The amounts of pandering done to the dreaded "fujoshi" are pretty slim compared to the amounts done to the gross types who buy Asuka body pillows and talk about how real women are 3d pig disgusting.

Re: FIRE EMBLEM

(Anonymous) 2016-02-01 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
okay wait, i think i see where we are getting our wires crossed.

when you said straight males did you mean the dudebros or the male otakus.

because i personally don't put them in the same category (cause male otakus are so outside of reality and dudebros are a different beasts all together)

Re: FIRE EMBLEM

(Anonymous) 2016-02-01 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, either/or? I mean, I don't think American dudebros have anything to do with what Japan does, if that's what you mean, sure.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-01 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
There are women who'd spend gobs of money on shit. However, the anime industry is so male otaku-centric that there just isn't as much stuff out there that appeals to women for them to spend money on compared to the amount of content out there meant to appeal to men.

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2016-02-01 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
lol

fujoshi are catered to so much that shonen jump tells writers to make sure their series appeal to them, instead of just young boys

the difference between fujoshi pandering and otaku pandering is that fujoshi pandering can be done in more subtle ways, but so many of the recent big hit series - attack on titan, tokyo ghoul - are big hits because of fujoshi, not otaku or kids
