unrelated tip: so there's reading, and then there's conscious reading. If you're in it to improve your writing stop yourself when you come across a line or segment you really like and ask yourself "why?" Even if you don't have an answer, pay a little more attention to what words the author is using than you normally would or how the dialogue hits. Same thing for things you didn't enjoy. You don't have to go college lit class or anything but keeping it in the forefront of your mind will help you retain it a bit better

24 are shopping and shopping related
7 youtube
30ish are fandom related including fanart and canon review material for rp

I would say I'm maybe 5-10 tabs over my normal in total right now so let's say it's usually around 80.

when was the last time we had a canon that ended well with a happy fandom

i'm not trying to be cheeky/edgy, just genuinely wondering

i guess better call saul is one but i wouldn't really count it as a fandom around here. castlevania could definitely count but i can't shake the feeling the fandom was already dead by the time it ended, wtf happened? ofmd was canceled and people had divided feelings about s2 anyway

the nerdy franchises... all ended horribly (GoT, VLD, DCEU) or kept being milked to death and people moved on (bnha, mcu, stranger things)

If we're going western animation like VLD, a lot of the less contentious western animation fandoms that aren't like VLD or Steven Universe tend to definitively end because western cartoons usually have an expiration date and the fandoms just quietly go to sleep and move on. Two I can think of that were happy with their endings and either quietly faded out or are fading out are Gravity Falls and The Owl House.

I would imagine some smaller anime fandoms have had similar endings happen since some anime only has one run of a show before ending, but the anime I'm into doesn't fall under that (bigger franchises, messier fandoms) so I can't say.

I'm feeling exhausted by the lack of characterization in tags. It's been years since I've truly enjoyed a crosscanon thread because the characters are often written without nuance, and writers assume their familiarity will somehow come across in their writing. It usually doesn't.

I had a fairly recent eye-opening experience when I wrote my character against someone from an anime I wasn't familiar with. The other writer did a great job portraying a character skilled at lying, which made for a fun dynamic with my guy, who is an excellent judge of character. Neither was written to be perfect in their respective traits. A clash could have happened if the other person hadn't detailed the small physical quirks (normally unnecessary for someone familiar with the canon, but this writer was aware of my blindness). They also subtly included canon information showing how this character usually gets away with lying, allowing me space to explore whether my character can sense the lies and why.

I ask in earnest: why is this difficult to come by? Are my standards too over the top? Is this just a case of writer incompatibility?

Disclaimer: I'm not claiming to be an exceptional writer. I'm active, consistently tag back, and rarely have threads dropped, but I realize how scarce things are and thread continuity doesn't necessarily mean my writing is any good.

how many chances to you try for tagging with someone before you let it go? meme threads, no ooc contact. they do reply a couple times but it always fizzles after a dozen tags or so.

Well memes by their very nature are basically no effort sessions. People will tag longer for the characters they want but it's consider pretty normal if it fizzles out after a dozen tags. If you really like rping with them you should ask if they're interested in a psl.

If you're talking just in general with a new person? Personally I give someone 3-4 times to respond to prompt before just giving up on them entirely. Sometimes people aren't in the mood/don't know what to write but after the fourth I can pretty much assume they just don't want to rp with me. Of course there are always those who just top level just to top level and never reply to anyone. Good lucky, nonny.

i've been thinking of rping from a canon that doesn't have many visuals but enough presence to probably have fanart. before it comes up: i don't plan to use any art the artist has a do not repost on it

how does one go about finding fanart on twitter? the platform is a mess

Does the canon have an official fanart tag? That would make it easier to find artists drawing the character(s) you are interested in.

If it has a pixiv presence you could look up the canon name's tag and see if an artist's profile links to their twitter account. Alternatively, more nsfw option: go search for the canon in porn/h galleries (some of those also host gen/sfw doujin and fanart collections) to find artists you like, then search for their handle or account username.

Nearly every game since 2006 has had a ban on pregnancy/baby plots, to the point we see games (especially sex/sex-friendly games, for obvious reasons) flat out stating in the FAQ that your characters are temporarily sterilized in the jamjar so no one has to worry, and sometimes even "if your character was already pregnant, not anymore, but don't worry, the baby is magically fine Somewhere Else and they'll be back to normal when you drop". It's obvious why this came about (I remember the old days and the cringey baby plots, and pregnancy is a more common trigger for the now older playerbase than it was back then), and no one ever brings it up IC.

But it got me thinking: has anyone ever played this for horror? As a DWRP genre trope that we take for granted for player comfort, it could easily be twisted that way. Unwanted sterilization is a huge invasion of the character's body and negation of their personal autonomy, after all, and horror games regularly play to that, from the old standby of microchips in the body turning your powers off a la Discedo to Ryslig's transforming people into human-eating monsters to facilitate corruption arcs.

The only thing is that those examples are more fantastical and thus easier for players to accept and play into, but I think it could easily just be made a smaller part of a larger whole. We've also seen other DWRP norms that are casually accepted be played for horror in the past; most notably, the shift from "everyone fourth walls each other for fun" to "don't fourth wall people, they'll have an existential crisis" led to both TL;DR (and its sequel Deer Country) and SCP making "the fourth wall is real and you're not" a key component of their plots for horror purposes.

I don't know, what do you all think? Is this a terrible idea?
