Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.
Do not solicit money, Dreamwidth points, or other currency unless you are offering a good or service in return.

Tbh I have a fix it character i play and I’m not so much interested in aus as getting cross canon play and using that cr and plot as a fixit avenue. It’s more like I want to see my character in a life outside her canon. I also actually think a constant drip feed of never ending content is more important than any fixit impulse.

> constant dripfeed content: probably one of the reasons gachas and mmos have such long-standing popularity in dwrp next to mcu and such as well

now i think about it, it also feels like there's somewhat fewer big media out there that does dripfeed installments in general these days? like the kind where chapters/eps are released consistently but over a considerably spread out span of time, ie several months or even years. iirc there's still animanga that maintain that sort of format ofc, plus the aforementioned online games, and so on. but i've also seen a lot more "release all the season's eps in one big chunk at once" type stuff, or the more unfortunate "next installment has been delayed a year"/"series has been cancelled by streaming service and left dangling forever"

it's a bit of a tangent from the op topic of this thread, but the amount of dripfeed probably has an effect on fandom longevity too. there's a lot of engagement and content generation to be had in chewing on new material & speculating over future story beats each time new story hits, but the window for that probably gets a lot smaller when the canon's a quick one and done or takes way too long between updates

honestly i miss having more serialized releases

you got so much engagement and fandom interaction out of the week(s) between episodes where the fandom pepe silvia'd all over the plot beats revealed in the current episode and then recontextualized the info dropped in previous episodes

streaming availability did a lot for convenience, in some ways, but the experience of bingewatching something all in one go after the canon's over is a lot different from watching it alongside everyone else as it airs, and i kind of miss the latter. it doesn't really exist anymore outside of like, anime and comics/manga it feels like? and stuff like MCU but that's a whole another can of bees. it feels like everyone spent a lot more time actually chewing over the content and buzzing over it together because most everyone's on the same page compared to these days where it seems like a lot more passive consumption happens unless you get really into the brainrot because of, idk, lack of space to let things digest, i guess? too much to absorb all at once to really think it over so you don't as much, not really, which also hurts the kind of discussion that fandom is built on.

that and the relative lack of guaranteed community if you so much as get into something even a month late, because if you don't have a friend who's already into it or who's getting into it at the same time to talk shop with then there's a high chance of the energy just kind of fizzling into the void because we don't really have all that many spaces to strike up more involved conversations and discussions with complete strangers about random specific minutiae anymore. there's reddit and discord, and then what? tumblr and twitter and amino aren't really conducive to long conversations outside of 1on1 dms, but then you don't have people interjecting with their own thoughts in a longform comment/subthread/reply that way.

i'm sure part of this is nostalgia goggles speaking, but man. fandom these days just feels different. it's not all bad, but there are things i miss from the pre-streaming/release an entire season in one go and pray it doesn't get cancelled before the next one era.

it's definitely a me problem but i can't get into a lot of comics/manga/webnovels all that much no matter how much i try haha. i have trouble parsing the action from panel to panel a lot of times in the more actiony ones (which tend to be the long runners) and end up spending a lot of time trying to figure out what's going on and how things went from point a to point b, and a lot of the typical webnovel plots while they're less hard to parse action wise fall into tropes and writing conventions i don't care much for. also idk if it's just me but the pacing in a lot of them feels off...?

i'm sure there's decent webnovel options out there but i'm just bad at sifting through generic isekai power leveling fantasy reborn as a villainess #2309286 to get to the tastier stuff. i don't even necessarily dislike these plots entirely, i'm just tired of how they're executed most of the time.

to be clear, i miss when fandoms in general had more longevity and ongoing discussion, which was a side effect/consequence of serialization, not necessarily the serialization itself. and when more things used to be serialized, it meant picky people like me had a higher chance of finding a canon we liked that also had a relatively alive fandom just because there were more options to pick from. these days it's a good season if i find one or two series in an anime season that i'm interested in checking out. i'm not so down bad that i'm about to get into a hot mess that should have ended years ago like bnha just to scratch the 'need something new every month or w/e' itch.

As someone who is currently enjoying weekly release discussions/squee of a live action drama on tumblr and discord and reddit for "House of the Dragon" and "The Boys" and is still riding the intense hype wave of chatter and vids and art and fanfiction after two months of theorising on "Interview With A Vampire" I gotta say I feel like this is to some degree a you problem. I still do fandom the same way I did four, eight, twelve years ago.
