Does anyone else get "loyal" to threading with only one person's character on bakerstreet? Even at the expense of getting more frequent tags from other versions of that character?

That's an unpopular opinion here. There's been countless of threads about how crazy it is to not want to thread with every version of the same character. At the same time, though, you cold get criticized for doing that (esp. a player with a female character wanting to play with certain male characters). But yes, I'm the same way although I've been trying to change that pattern.

sometimes you hit it off with a certain version of a character and start going to them first, which is fine and natural. but that wouldn't stop me from tagging with another player's version of they tagged me or left a good tl.

tbh people are only gonna notice if you're like that one person on bakerstreet who posts on smut memes but writes "shipping locked to [my gf]'s characters!" on all of them. even that isn't bad, just very "why post here then?" i haven't seen it in a bit though so maybe they finally got a musebox

the temptation can be there but it's a bit dangerous ime. putting all your investment eggs in that one character journal's basket can be a bad time if that player ever ends up getting tired of threading with you, or loses that character's voice, or drops out of general rp for any particular reason, etc

rn i play from canons where there's lots of people playing multiples of castmates around. there's usually at least a couple with solid characterization and fun writing. so i like hitting up multiples; i always have my fav pairing dynamics in my inbox, and i'm less likely to catch hard feelings about any one person being a bit slower or flaky or whatever. win/win

Sometimes I do settle down with a favourite version, but exclusive "loyalty" like that sounds unhealthy. At least, the players who think about it in those terms usually are.

being exclusive was a pain in the ass on tumblr and it's just as much a pain in the ass anywhere else, multiverse/multishipping is truly the way to go. none of this 'x is my [other half of pair]' business.

depends what you mean by loyal

having a favorite? fine. prioritizing tagging with the favorite? fine. not tagging with one who rubs you the wrong way for literally any reason? fine.

declaring somebody the only version of a character you will ever tag period? that's weird. it has soulbondy overtones, ic/ooc divide overtones, puts a shitload of pressure on them to be your hot and cold running (character,) and it's also just cutting off the potential of finding a new tagging partner you could really enjoy

i wouldn't call it "loyalty" and i find that framing to be off-putting, since it has connotations of ooc jealousy/possessiveness. ("i can't thread with another version of their character because then it's like i'm cheating on my rp partner.")

however there have definitely been times when i played against someone who's so good that i opt not to tag other versions of the same character, just because i know the other ones won't measure up in my mind + i'll be mentally comparing them and finding the other one lacking, which isn't fair to them.

nah if i'm playing naruto i'm tagging every sasuke that doesn't have naruto on a DNI list. :) every single one is going to bring something slightly different to the table so i'll get to explore the dynamic in so many different ways. it's the "two cakes!" meme.

i might find a sasuke i vibe with better than the others who i'll show preference to but i'll still tag others unless i know for a fact we don't really vibe well

I certainly hope that I'm someone's favourite version of the character(s) I play but I would never want them to drop everyone else just to play with me. It would make me sad to think they might be limiting themselves that way.

I also love threading with the same character I play because everyone has their own nuance to playing them.

i actually picked up this little guy even before the big reveal about him dropped lol...idk i was charmed by his cute interactions and swagless combat animations, and i'm a sucker for overlooked side characters trying their best on the sidelines of a plot way bigger and shinier than them. i also had some thoughts about his clock theming and the fandom speculation around how characters aside from mc weirdly didn't seem to notice him around, so i was looking forward to how that mystery would pan out!

and now the mystery's solved...and now i'm even more attached haha. ha.

:') he can still run around forever in memeland......

While account is old, and was for an AU that was basically this character before she was made canon in the gatcha game.

Honestly just the general idea of her made me switch the account to her and that sparks joy in me.

honestly, i knew there was a pretty good chance i would pick up wise before zzz even officially released because i... am just a sucker for a soft-spoken good boy, and soft-spoken good boys tend to be protagonists... and at this point my muselist is about 70% Video Game Protagonists and i think it's funny so i keep adding to my protagonist collection. so part of it was like, yeah, i'm picking him up on that basis alone

but the actual serious moment that made me decide i was going to go insane for him was the "i am your proxy" moment from chapter 1 where he responds to his clients' skepticism about his true intentions with... a kind of earnest incorruptibility and responsibility for the situation they're in, and that was the moment i was like, ah, yeah, i'm doomed

another much less serious reason is that i became outrageously fond of him upon seeing his room for the first time??? (sorry for the wise propaganda video title.) it is so cool?? it is so incredibly tasteful and curated?? i don't know what i expected but it wasn't four pillows and a bed so neatly made he actually has a bed runner that his sister makes fun of him for?? i am just so charmed. it was over for me the minute i saw that he plays acoustic guitar

edit: i just realized. it's not. an acoustic guitar. it's an ukulele. belle plays the fucking electric guitar and he's out here with an UKULELE

I took a huge break from rp (years) and have come back looking to get back into the hobby but I’m suffering from huge writers block! I have started threads but I am not satisfied with my level of creativity and the hold I have on characterization, when both used to come easily to me. I am almost always stumped when I receive a tag and it has been a bit discouraging.

I’ve been reading more but that doesn’t seem to have helped… I am wondering if it’s because the standards seem to have grown since I was around last, and I feel pressured?

Anyone have tips?

Oh, Cucumber Quest! I think GGDG said she intended to finish and release it in script form, but IDK if she changed her mind since I haven't heard anything about it.

Nana is one, too. I accidentally got spoiled for the last chapter and I don't think Yazawa is ever going to back and finish it. I was like "What? That's it?" IIRC, Yazawa had health problems so it was put on indefinite hiatus but knowing what was in that last chapter, it's so hard to go back and try to read it again.
