Does anyone else get so annoyed when people keep talking about how they're SO late to a fandom, when a new installment of the franchise just dropped or it's a fandom that's been going on for years because it keeps getting new installments? Is this just fad fandom bullshit where people think they're too late if they want to rp from something after the first month it dropped.

given how strong the trend of fad rping is, people who say shit like they're late to a fandom probably feel like they're being left behind by the new blood, especially if nobody visibly plays from the era they're playing from. it's annoying to hear about, but being on their end of it is probably sad as hell too.

Help me, anons, I am torn about this decision.

I'm considering playing an obscure book character who has a lot of specific, quirky details about their appearance. These are details important to their character that absolutely would come up in threads, and they're specific enough that I wouldn't be able to find a PB that both ticks off those details and looks ANYTHING LIKE the way the character is otherwise described. Believe me, I've looked. A lot.

Should I:

a) choose a PB who has about the right appearance and makes the expressions I want, but who doesn't have those details. This would be the equivalent of "ok so this kid doesn't have glasses or a lightning scar, but other than that he looks like my mental image of Harry Potter."

b) draw the icons myself. I'm OK at faces and facial expressions, but my lineart is dicey, so self-made icons would look obviously amateurish but not complete shit.

(the obvious option C, pay a better artist for drawn icons, is off the table due to being broke.)

Would it bother you more to play off a character whose icons don't include a bunch of details about their appearance that should be instantly apparent to your character, or to play off a character with icons that look like them but that the player clearly drew themselves?

personally i could get over the PB easier if you mention the quirky details about their appearance now and then in tags just to remind me they exist.

I think I realized why I don't play a lot of OCs in here, and it's not about the bias. While I love writing my own OCs and worlds, I realized I don't have the money nor the patience to commission or draw icons for them, and having an account without icons is kind of a faux pas in here.

If it was a canon character, I think there'd be some side-eyeing since most of them have visual representation of sorts. Save for book characters, of course, which would technically place them in the same place as OCs.

As long as the OC in question had a sufficient profile that showed his personality, full image of appearance and description, permissions, and the like, would you play with an OC that had only one icon?

for me it's dreamwidthlayouts for journal layouts + dreamcodes for a nice nav code + using my measly html skills from there to finagle around with colors and fonts and such after pasting in the base custom css

idk about any other layout comms but now im camping out in this thread to find out too

Just wondering since a bunch of new games are open or opening: what games out there are more lax about how recent a character's canon point is in their app, or don't have any hard app rules about having to wait x period of time before a character can be taken from a certain new canon point?

I guess it's dependent on the medium too, eg. movie franchises like MCU update on a less frequent basis than the TV shows or serialized (web)comics/manga which tend to update once a week or month. In this case I'm more inclined to app a character from the latter type of medium, though FWIW I'm sure mods have the good sense to differentiate between spoiler-proofing major revelations like "character A finds out character B is his long-lost brother" and letting past filler like "this band played a new song this week."

you can do that, but make sure to check their plurk profile first. a lot of people will say "ask before adding" or "would prefer to be added only if we have cr" or something.

there really isn't a right or wrong etiquette as long as you don't add people without checking. a lot of people don't add anyone, but it's hard to deny that having people on plurk can open up possibilities for threads.

Help, anons. This might be a question you've had before and I apologize if it is. I've been out of journal-form RP since before the exodus from LJ and have never had a plurk account. To be honest, I don't think I want one. Microblogging doesn't appeal to me. Am I going to lose out on a lot of plotting opportunities once I join a game? Is it enough to be proactive through PMs and CR memes or is plurk genuinely vital?

Intense cardio for at least 30 minutes, broken up into chunks between various weight machines. I concentrate on different muscle groups each day. The cardio is necessary for general health and helping get your heart rate up, while the weights actually help with burning calories. At least in my experience.
