help meme please

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

this is my first time playing a villain and i'm nervous about it. he's not a creeper type, but my natural instinct is to try to be kind and accommodating to everyone and his is not. i hope i can do him justice.

As a villain player the biggest problem we get is people woobifying villains. As long as you’re not trying to make him out as some poor tragic baby whose actions were justified, you’re probably doing just fine.

same boat as you and he's not really a villain so much a racist (fantasy character, anti-human) troublemaker with little empathy. worried about some players wanting nothing to do with him in that way or are so willing to avoid conflict they neuter their own character to do that

but at the same time i'm really tired of all my cr being so fluffy and safe and conflict free and i just want to spice up my threads. i miss the days when we let our players go through the ringer and get dramatic developments out of it. it was memorable. threads these days feel so forgettable because nothing happens in them lol

let your villain flag fly nonny, we really need more around

since i'm also picking up a villain in a game soon and this top level is here, i'm gonna use it to ask for advice.

this is my first time both apping a villain into a game and playing with castmates. this guy has thanos levels of notoriety so i have a few questions:

- this villain fucks with people's heads a lot in canon and i know not everybody is into that. i have an opt-out post already set up, are there any other precautions i should take?
- i have castmates already in the game and they're all hero types. how do i hash things out with them ooc so we're not stepping on each other's toes? i don't want them posting on the network about how my bad guy is a piece of shit or trying to kill him every time he's getting groceries or whatever, but i also don't want no conflict at all.
- are there any things you wish you saw villains doing more of in your game? or less of?

hit enter too soon but also:

- is there anything i should be prepared for aside from the complaints in the villain thread on the first page about ic/ooc bleed and some obnoxious hero characters?

For villains who use psychological manipulation (or mind-altering powers, depending on how your villain rolls) I strongly recommend only pulling IC head games with players who are actually into the idea. In other words: don't just avoid fucking with the heads of people who use your opt-out. Only go there with players who you have good OOC contact with and who like the idea of doing that with their character. This will save you a lot of wank, awkwardness and headaches.

Talk to your future castmates and be clear about what you'd like to do in game. Be flexible about IC consequences. It'll ruin a villain player's fun to have the good guys constantly trying to kill them, but it'll ruin a hero player's fun to have a villain running around doing openly villainous things when the player doesn't want them to get caught/have serious long-term consequences result from it. The ideal is to make sure everyone can have fun!

100% agree only doing head games on those who explicitly agree to it (And don't give you weird vibes about it), as too many people who should use opt-out/in posts don't.

i love all of you, thank you. i'm trying not to woobify him, and i'm definitely planning to keep channels of communication wide open for anyone who wants to interact with him. it's a challenge playing an abrasive character when i am not that, but also i figure the more uncomfortable i am with writing it the better chance i have of staying ic.

i'm also lucky enough that he's not the type that his castmates would shout to the rest of the game about! so i can be quietly evil. it's pretty exciting. good luck, other villain nonny! we can do this!
