My new desktop arrived a week earlier than expected, so I'm just moving all of my files to an external at one time, rather than doing it piecemeal. The downloads folder, all 112 GB of it, is gonna be the worst. It's crawling along at 750 kbps.

I kind of want to stop and try going piece by piece, see if that goes faster, but it's already been moving for an hour now.

premise would be dinner party-esque, with some preset "killer" role worked out through the moderator and some clues added in to help move along the plot. any takers?

that's very normal, and is part of why network posts are frequently a faster format. if there's nothing important or interesting about the delivery or a motive that might benefit from clarifying, bare dialogue is totally fine.

anybody else have a problem with gathering their thoughts enough to write even short tags? it's hard to describe but it feels like my mind is racing with countless lines of dialogue at once but none of it is actually good or IC. it usually takes me 30 minutes to write even two sentence tags because i can't make myself focus

i honestly wonder if it's because i don't read books anymore and my brain's become addicted to instant gratification ala reddit. even TFLN is a struggle and that's bare minimum effort

Have any of you ever had issues with formatted text not showing properly or at all in comments made on your smart devices? I've tried throwing up some quick tags from my smartphone but anything I put inside [font] or [tt] doesn't show up in the preview at all, and text inside [small] doesn't show up small at all. Of course replace the [] with <>. I just did it that way because the formatting made my text disappear.

I don't care what reasons you might have for turning off plurk notifications, that's fine, you do you etc. but it'd be really nice if y'all could put an actual heads-up about your notifs being off in your plurk profile or something so I can just go straight to pming you my questions instead of pinging you in a plurk and then spending a couple days wondering whether pinging you again would do any good/come off as annoying/be outright useless anyway

this is the third time I've tried to ask somebody a small but slightly time-sensitive question with a ping in a plotting plurk only to get "oh sorry I don't actually get notifs" well after the fact

I can't read your plurk settings! I don't mind just pming you, but it'd be nice to have some way of knowing that beforehand!

Try pming people first? I turn off my pings because assholes I'm in plurks with ping me before they reply to every line of a conversation and I don't want constant streams of notifs in my inbox. More and more people are doing it. If I want to contact someone, I always use the pm function, because that's my personal guarantee that they'll get the message.

It's on you to change your behavior not other people, sorry.

Maybe you should start by thinking why your characters have been topping. When you know that reason, then you might know what's the opposite of that.

Why does it have to be either or anyway? Is it about control? Are the characters in an equal relationship or not?

Okay, I'm a long-time RPer at forum RPGs for a while, but never a journal comm RP. But since I discovered a game I like, I decided to go for it. I read all about the terminology, I learned how to get started, but the problem is the icons, how to act a canon character, and such. So I need advice on the following things:

1. Since I RP at forums, I get used with RPing with original characters. Unfortunately, I'm worried that I might not able to RP a canon despite my fanfiction experience...

2. I'm a total stink at icons. All I do is crop them into the right size and not getting a high-quality one, even with screencaps.

So can somehow help a newbie here, please?

1. What is it about playing a canon character that's making you unsure? Also, if the game that you're interested in accepts OCs, it might be worth it to start with one since you seem to be more comfortable.

2. There are resources for icons here, on LJ, IJ, and even tumblr. Sometimes if I'm stuck, I just google "[character or actor name] icons dreamwidth". If you don't come up with anything, try rotating out dreamwidth for livejournal, insanejournal, etc. You could always ask in the icon/graphic help thread here if anyone knows where to find icons of your particular character, as well.

So say that there's a small, odd game going around on plurk that won't advertise here or in the enableme_plz meme. It says it will allow a max of less than fifty players, maybe even as low as twenty, is a heavily AU-based setting, and seems to hold elements sort of like a dressing room with what sounds like regular campaigns to keep plot moving. There's a set run-time which means it's probably not going to be a long-running game, but a couple of your friends are pretty excited about it and are planning on joining... the setting itself sounds fun but I've never played in one before and I know they get bitched about here a lot.

Would you hop in as well despite the AU stuff and the smallness of the game and the other unknowns?

one of my coworkers daughters is on a contiki tour of europe and its making me want to travel really badly, so let's talk about travelling! talk about your last vacation, one you're planning, one you want to plan, whatever.

and does anyone have any experience with contiki tours? i havent traveled extensively but ive been looking at some of their packages and they look good, but i've heard some shady things about them

I kicked around Australia for a month a while back. Had a blast running amok on my own (even got to drive from Port Douglas (favorite stop, Melbourne was my favorite city) to Brisbane, woot for driving on the other side of the road). I took the Ghan out to Alice Springs at one point though and hooked up with a contiki tour for that part until I hopped off on my own to Darwin. I really had a lot of fun with the tour. They hit up a lot of places but still gave you time to do exploring on your own, fed you fairly well and did plenty of things that gave you excuses to bond with the rest of the people on the tour. We slept out under the stars at one point. The guides were fun and listened and the age group was right for me. Lots of walking, which I enjoy. And it got me into a lot of places without the hassle of me having to drive out to them or figure out how to get tickets etc. The only downside was you shared a room with three other people but for the week I was part of the tour it wasn't a big deal and meant I always had someone to hang out with. By the end I was ready to cut loose on my own again but I'm an introvert so five days constantly surrounded by people was just the right amount of time without being too much. Haven't been on a contiki tour since but from that one, I'd recommend them. Cheap way to get around, they make sure you get to see a lot, the buses are clean, the people are on the roughly college age give or take. I've heard some shady rumors since then as well but the one I went on at least was above board and very suitable for a single girl traveling alone.
