BATTLEBORN

(Anonymous) 2016-05-11 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
is anyone actually playing this or is it all cricket chirps because of overwatch

Re: BATTLEBORN

(Anonymous) 2016-05-15 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm so sad that this game isn't getting more recognition. I'd play it if I had the technology (and plan to when I get my gaming desktop up and running again)

Re: BATTLEBORN

(Anonymous) 2016-05-18 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
it comes down to a really unfortunate choice for release date. i don't know how aware gearbox was of overwatch, but all the big promos for OW dropped right when battleborn was released (notably the beta), and now OW is dropping in less than a week.

it makes me sad because even though i'm not that interested in battleborn, i know gearbox was and still is really, really hopeful about it. from what i've heard them say they really poured their hearts into it and the sad thing is i don't know if it's going to get a fraction of the attention because of overwatch.

don't get me wrong, i love overwatch. it's a great game. but battleborn deserves some attention too. releasing it so close to overwatch was just a huge mistake.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-19 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
It'd probably have more attention if it was a better game.

Re: BATTLEBORN

(Anonymous) 2016-05-19 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
but

they're two different genres. battleborn is a MOBA.

Re: BATTLEBORN

(Anonymous) 2016-05-19 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
do you really think the majority of people care about the minute genre difference

all they see is "stylized multiplayer game with a million characters to play"

Re: BATTLEBORN

(Anonymous) 2016-05-20 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
... yes? because that's not a fucking minute difference. they appeal to completely different audiences.

Re: BATTLEBORN

(Anonymous) 2016-05-21 06:16 pm (UTC)(link)
calm down dude

the majority of casual gamers aren't gonna care, is what i meant. they were released at the same time and have a similar format. screech about mobas all you want but battleborn is totally overshadowed by the bigger, louder, more advertised multiplayer right now.

Re: BATTLEBORN

(Anonymous) 2016-05-21 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I am calm, it's more that you don't seem to get that this is a huge difference and, yes, casual gamers will notice.

like, have you never heard of League of Legends? people know what MOBAs are.

+1

(Anonymous) 2016-05-21 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
this is like saying minecraft and call of duty only have "minute" differences because all you see is that they're both first person perspective games.

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2016-05-22 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
those are terrible comparisons and nothing like the comparison between ow and bb but ok anon.

bb is doomed either way.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-22 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
I'm a casual gamer what's the huge difference?

Especially since Google tells me Battleborn just has "MOBA elements" what does that mean. How is it different

da

(Anonymous) 2016-05-22 05:00 pm (UTC)(link)
"MOBA" stands for "Multiplayer Online Battle Arena". it means there's a bunch of players at once, controlling a single character, and there's strategy involved in that there's enemies to kill.

that's... about it. even MOBA players don't have a strict definition of the word. i'm convinced the only people who act like MOBAs are their own super speshul genre that need an acronym definition hang out on kotaku or forbes and try to make video games seem more complex than they actually are.

"has MOBA elements" is a stupid phrase. any game can "have MOBA elements" if you squint. both OW and BB are multiplayer first-person-shooters, battleborn just has more of a landscape to traverse and includes enemies to kill.

that's it.

that's the huge difference that warrants internet arguments.

that's the acronym that has such a broad definition that people are calling overwatch a MOBA.

god i hate gamers.

i think the distinction between casual gamers like ayrt and self-professed "hardcore gamers" is an important one to make

in my experience the hardcore ones are the insufferable cunts while the casuals are usually a sane bunch. the problem with so-called "moba" games is that they attract all the hardcores with a smattering of curious casuals for flavor. i've tried a few moba games, just because i have a friend who happens to be one of those hardcore gamers (and i'm sure i'd hate him like i hate all the others if we hadn't grown up together) who keeps trying to get me into them

da

(Anonymous) 2016-05-22 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
vidya games are my main fandom and one of my biggest hobbies but i try so hard not to be A Gamer

i get so embarrassed for my kind when they start getting enraged over moving picture toys and start harping about casuls in complete seriousness

Re: da

(Anonymous) 2016-05-23 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
oh please, casuals are just as insufferable. they're like the vegans or non-smokers of the gaming world.

Re: da

(Anonymous) 2016-05-22 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
if all you think makes a MOBA is having enemies to kill besides player characters, then that's on you, mate. other people, yes even casual gamers, get it just fine once they actually look at a MOBA game.

if my boss at work can tell the difference between overwatch and battleborn, and he isn't a gamer by a long shot, you can too buddy. I believe in you.

Re: da

no one cares

the whole point of this conversation is that hardcore gamers are embarrassing fucks and for better or worse they fly to moba games like moths to the flame, as evidence by ayrt's wannabe-superior-but-really-just-neckbeardy response to the other anon

Re: da

(Anonymous) 2016-05-22 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
anon, idk how to break this to you, but LoL has about 27 million people playing it per day, and an even larger installed userbase. That's not really a hardcore minority. Plenty of casual people play it, too.

wouldn't recommend it, tbh, because the hardcore kids are obnoxious shitheads and treat most of the casual players like crap, but they're still there.

Re: da

(Anonymous) 2016-05-22 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah and wow has 12 million people playing it in its heyday, that didn't stop it from getting its just rep as a soul-sucking pit for people to forfeit their jobs, families and social lives all in short order

lol is just the successor for that demographic. plenty of normies play it casually on the sly but they wouldn't identify with the culture like neckbeardy anon does

the other anon oversimplified it, tbh. you can generally spot a MOBA game pretty easily, but the problem is there actually aren't a whole lot of them.

Defense of the Ancients 2, Guilty Gear Overture, League of Legends, and now Battleborn are literally the only games I can recall that actually have all of the needed elements to make a MOBA.

but to put it in easy terms that aren't just taken from vague wiki articles;

in a MOBA, you select your player character (or champion, as they're called traditionally) and you use your set of skills and whatever mobs of soldiers/servants you can summon to basically take over a given map and eventually stick your flag in the enemy's base or whatever other winning conditions have been set.

the big difference between MOBAs and other games are the summoned mobs of soldiers/slaves, the "lanes" maps are divided into and thus set the flow of gameplay, and that your character or chapion levels up and gains new skills and stuff as you play (as opposed to a fixed skill set) but resets after the round is one or lost.

they're like a combination of real time strategy games like og Warcraft (which is where MOBAs got their start, Warcraft mods) and action RPGs.

so in this case, Battleborn is super different from Overwatch. Overwatch is a team-based shooting game. Character skillsets are largely fixed (though I think mid-game upgrades happen, too? don't quote me on that), there are no mobs to contend with, and maps are divided into the typical point control style gameplay you'd get in a game like Team Foretress 2 or Battlefront (and I think they have a capture-the-flag style map type, too).

they wouldn't appeal to the same players, because aside from the first person perspective, the play approach is very different in each.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-22 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
not touching on genre differences but ia they are two very different games and only look similar on a surface level

i'd say battleborn seems a lot more complex and requires the player to "do more" pn an individual level to perform well whereas overwatch (at least at the time of the beta) is more fast-paced, simple, and team-oriented. it's a hell of a lot like team fortress 2

ayrt

(Anonymous) 2016-05-23 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, the level of involvement required of the player is what's gonna make the big difference in who which game appeals to. Battleborn is definitely for the types who already like games like LoL or DOTA, whereas Overwatch is way more about loadout and jumping right in and shooting shit.
