i thought the point of this convo was that "moba" is a dumb, barely-helpful distinction, and in the end the gaming community is the literal personification of /v/ with all its impotent anger over shit that doesn't matter

like what the definition of "moba" is and whether or not the average person knows what it is

the definition of genres matters because it helps consumers make informed decisions. and an average gamer, casual or otherwise, is probably gonna know what a moba is at this point since whether you love it or hate it, LoL is goddamn everywhere in the gaming world.

it's cool if you hate gamers and all, but facts is facts, anon.

i know what lol is but i'd never heard of MOBA before this thread happened. knowing it exists doesn't mean everyone's played it or knows the intricacies of how it works and what it is

i know what mmorpgs are, but this is literally the first time i've ever heard moba used.

MOBA isn't an obscure term, it's been used for years to describe a number of games, including several of the most played ones of all time. just because you and some other out of touch dinguses haven't heard of it doesn't mean it's some arcane acronym.

not ayrt but someone else in this discussion (i made the post about moba essentially being the worst of mmos and fighters) and... sorry, anon, but i gotta take ayrt's side on this

moba isn't some super-obscure prot-speceed pally level term but it isn't something most casuals know either. i know it because i'm a crusty old gamer who desperately tries not to be a Gamer but lbr most people who are in deep enough with gamer culture to know it are either gamers like me desperately clinging to casualness or Gamers

i'm not even a casual, this just isn't my genre. why would someone have this knowledge if they don't care about this type of game?

i've played hundreds of games and i had no idea what a moba was, specifically, until i looked it up recently

i just equated it with "neckbeardy games i have no desire to play" so why would i know the definition lol

i know the term and i STILL equate it with "neckbeardy games i have no desire to play" because that's really what it is

sometimes it's okay to just call a spade a spade

same tbh. i know what an rpg is, a fps, mmorpg, rts, and other assloads of gaming acronyms that get thrown around. moba was completely new for me and i still don't quite get what sets it apart

but most people who casually game DO know what it is, enough that people can make informed consumer decisions about the differences between Battleborn and Overwatch, which is what started this whole abortion of a thread.

okay, but when people chime in with 'i never heard this term, what is it' the correct response isn't to call them an idiot and blame them for not being a ~true gamer.

no one did that. an anon came in and insisted because they didn't know, it was therefore a minute difference that no one would know.

maybe two or three comments in this whole thread are people genuinely asking about anything, the rest are people acting like you have to be a basement dwelling nerdlord to know what major game genres are.
