honestly though, when you've been a gamer for a decade (or longer) and literally have never heard a term before, it really is a reasonable assumption that not a lot of people know it unless, as someone else said, they're balls-deep in the genre

i also worked at a game store not long ago and i hadn't heard of it until now

I've been a gamer for less time than that and I knew the word. I think people on both sides are assuming their knowledge, or lack thereof, is universal.

because TO THE LAYMAN, they are. that's what you don't seem to grasp. unless you're balls deep in the types of games, they are going to seem the same to you. so when someone goes 'they're the same thing' going 'NUR NUR MOBA IS SO VURRY DIFFRUNT' doesn't magically make anyone understand dick.

then it was explained. then someone went 'well, just saying 'it's a moba' isn't going to really explain anything'. and that's where we are now: someone deciding to be butthurt that no one knows what moba is off the bat and that makes us all ignorant dinguses.

you say "to the layman" but I'd think anyone who cares enough to buy either game would know, even if they don't know what mobas are called, what the differences are, and they ain't little. but it's okay to just say "oh I didn't know" or "it's okay you didn't know"

I didn't mean to imply it was an elite club, and I'm not sure why you thought I did since I specifically chose those words to imply the opposite. I mean that most people looking to make a decision between one or the other, which neither are really competing against one another so this whole thing is kinda dumb anyways, they're probably gonna know there's more to them than simple cosmetic differences.
