the whole point of this conversation is that hardcore gamers are embarrassing fucks and for better or worse they fly to moba games like moths to the flame, as evidence by ayrt's wannabe-superior-but-really-just-neckbeardy response to the other anon

anon, idk how to break this to you, but LoL has about 27 million people playing it per day, and an even larger installed userbase. That's not really a hardcore minority. Plenty of casual people play it, too.

wouldn't recommend it, tbh, because the hardcore kids are obnoxious shitheads and treat most of the casual players like crap, but they're still there.

yeah and wow has 12 million people playing it in its heyday, that didn't stop it from getting its just rep as a soul-sucking pit for people to forfeit their jobs, families and social lives all in short order

lol is just the successor for that demographic. plenty of normies play it casually on the sly but they wouldn't identify with the culture like neckbeardy anon does

i dunno, anon, WoW got that reputation more because it's a massive time investment. games in LoL take, what, twenty minutes? thirty minutes?

i know plenty of people you wouldn't think are gamers (and don't even identify as such) admit to playing League. And maybe you know plenty of people who wouldn't dare say aloud because, as we both agree, the LoL community is super toxic. but I still think it's well known enough that a casual player would recognize it and know what it is, and recognize when other games are like it.

the thing about games like this, mmos and now mobas, is that they are intentionally designed to be easy for casuals to grok and get sucked into but addictive enough for people to just play for hours upon hours on end. mmos accomplished this through the traditional rpg systems, leveling and quests and such. mobas are more like fighting games where they're static in a sense, you always start with the same characters and you play by matches rather than a single immersive "world"

abso-fucking-lutely. it's a huge part of the reason I didn't stick with it after I tried it. I'd already cut my teeth in the fighting game community and got super burned out by how the boys' club there behaved and it was more of the same in the higher tiers of LoL play.

i thought the point of this convo was that "moba" is a dumb, barely-helpful distinction, and in the end the gaming community is the literal personification of /v/ with all its impotent anger over shit that doesn't matter

like what the definition of "moba" is and whether or not the average person knows what it is

the definition of genres matters because it helps consumers make informed decisions. and an average gamer, casual or otherwise, is probably gonna know what a moba is at this point since whether you love it or hate it, LoL is goddamn everywhere in the gaming world.

it's cool if you hate gamers and all, but facts is facts, anon.

i know what lol is but i'd never heard of MOBA before this thread happened. knowing it exists doesn't mean everyone's played it or knows the intricacies of how it works and what it is

i know what mmorpgs are, but this is literally the first time i've ever heard moba used.

MOBA isn't an obscure term, it's been used for years to describe a number of games, including several of the most played ones of all time. just because you and some other out of touch dinguses haven't heard of it doesn't mean it's some arcane acronym.

moba isn't some super-obscure prot-speceed pally level term but it isn't something most casuals know either. i know it because i'm a crusty old gamer who desperately tries not to be a Gamer but lbr most people who are in deep enough with gamer culture to know it are either gamers like me desperately clinging to casualness or Gamers
