I'm the anon from a few posts back who made the Jason Stryker (X2) account. Still haven't figured out how to play him without going into levels of godmode RP has never yet seen, considering he can only communicate in mindscapes of his own creation.

But I've got the account for PSLs with a whole lot of planning behind them, so maybe one day.

I hate when people try to out-nerd each other.

I mean, I'm pretty nerdy. I RP (uh obviously haha), write fanfiction, etc. in addition to being pretty geeky about topics that interest me science and language wise. But I'm not very loud about these things in real life I guess? Like I'll watch Doctor Who with my close friends or tell someone about a new video game if I know that they're interested, but major geeking out about things is really retained to online and not something I feel defines me personally, and I think it's probably toned down as much as it has so far (because I was pretty outwardly nerdy would have joined the anime club if it existed type nerdy in high school) because of the field I work and study in.

So I show up to my day of just a random classics class I signed up for on a whim because I had some freetime and there is like... this gaggle of girls that are doing that weird elite nerd thing that very much reminded me of how I once went to a thing with John Green (and had never actually watched any nerdfighting things, just read the books and saw he was coming to my local library). They were actually talking about Tom Hiddleston loudly before class and asking if they were going to the doctor who club meeting (apparently a thing at my school??) and just talking about how it was SO NEAT that they got to take a Latin class and now this other classics class too!!!! And then when my instructor brought out a really old dictionary from 1870 they had visible reactions and were like oh my gosh I just want to SMELL it because I LOVE books I just LOVE THEM.

And it was just so odd and strange to me because I am usually not around people who are so outwardly nerdy and it just seemed sort of desperate to live up to this nerd image, like it was something that defined them so much that they needed to show it off. I'm not sure why this is bothering me as much as it is, but I really just wanted to tell them all to sit down and shut up and let me learn etymology in peace.

Also they were too enthusiastic about answering the discussion questions in class that they didn't give anyone else a chance to talk and that chaffed my hide.

as someone that loves the jak and daxter franchise (well, we don't talk about that awful frontier game, but other than that) i can understand your rage despite feeling differently.

it felt like, to me, that daxter had grown to be more comfortable as an ottsel than as the scrawny, kinda doofy-lookin' human he once was. i saw it as another sign that he's accepted being an ottsel, and also as a confirmation that he had grown less and less invested in the idea of having a human form again over time.

I have a bunch of old, colored icons for a character I used to play, but they all have borders on them. They look nice otherwise and I want to keep them, so what would be less garish? Should I chop them down to 98 x 98 or leave the borders there?

but icon fashions are silly and if someone is shallow enough to not rp with you because your icons have borders, then you probably wouldn't want to rp with them anyway

I know this sounds weird, but how are plot-driven games run on DWRP? Do the mods decide on injuries, outcomes? How are fights handled? How do you prevent godmodding?

I've haven't played in a game in ages because of time constraints. All my RP has been kept to PSLs, museboxes and memes. The players work this stuff out among themselves in those. I've played lots of tabletop RP, but that has it's internal rules to prevent the sort of, "My character is stronger/badasser than yours!" arguments I'd think you'd get in a large DWRP.

Speaking from personal experience, most of the time we work plots out amongst ourselves, or we just roll with the scene and see how it turns out. It's not that different from a PSL. If it's a really big plot that affects the setting, involves many characters, or involves mod NPCs, we'll usually get a mod to mediate the planning and okay major outcomes. Sometimes this requires some negotiating and retooling of the scene. That level of pre-planning is usually reserved for big, complex plots in the most plot-heavy games, though.

Fights against NPCs or monsters usually result in a player victory, so they don't need much planning. Mods usually don't care if monsters or nameless mooks get defeated.

As for godmoding in PvP fights... most players know to avoid it. Character abilities are described in apps, so even though we don't assign levels to certain skills, we can usually figure out the relative power level of the characters. If I wanted my weaker character to win against an obviously stronger opponent, I'd definitely discuss that with them ahead of time and work out a way for it to be possible. If I want my character to be injured (and many people do want to play out post-fight injury threads), I'll probably mention that to the other player, too. If my partner and I are playing characters who are roughly the same level and we're not planning on any major injuries, I'll probably just wing it. In battle threads, I end up writing a lot of stuff like "[Character] lunged towards her opponent, aiming a punch towards his face" so the other player can decide if the attack hits or gets dodged or whatever. Too much dodging makes a player look like a douche.

The important thing is that if you feel like you're being godmoded, you should stop the thread right there and deal with the problem. Most people are willing to edit their tag until it's mutually acceptable. Don't just grumble about it and move on. Don't wait for a HMD or wankgate to call out the bad behavior. While there are a handful of "my character is the strongest and best ever!!" powergamers in DWRP, they're relatively rare and relatively easy to pinpoint and avoid. Many games ban grossly overpowered characters anyway, or make them tone it down. Most of the godmoding you encounter in DWRP will be newbies and bad players making dumb, lazy mistakes - make them fix it!

I'm not saying that there's no godmoding in DWRP, but there's less than you probably think. Infomoding is a much bigger problem most of the time.

cases i understand are major wankers or characters you hate. cases i also understand are dropped threads when you realize you aren't feeling it, but oftentimes you aren't giving people even a chance and it really boggles my mind.

i know this happens all the time but i just want to hear reasons from the people who do it because i'm seriously scratching my head.

The times I've done that, it's because I was playing in a game at the time, got swamped, and put my game tags first. Not a great habit, I know, but it's not that I didn't care to tag back from the beginning.

does anyone here have relatively benign hallucinations?

if so, what are they and what causes them? are you diagnosed with anything?

in my case i tend to often smell something strange and out of place, like i'll be out in the middle of nowhere and suddenly smell thai food, or i'll swear something stinks and go through the entire house looking for it only for the smell to up and vanish within twenty minutes. i'll also hear random strains of music when there's nothing playing, or mistake common household noises for voices, or just hear someone speak out of nowhere.

i also catch a lot of things on the edge of my vision and will think i've seen something running across the room, or floating near the ceiling. sometimes i'll look at something i see every day and it will just suddenly seem different somehow, too, as in out of place, or larger or smaller than it should be, and it'll feel like i've never seen the object before even though i may have looked at it every day for a month prior to that.

assuming it won't cost you an arm and a leg, you might want to get that checked out at some stage, anon. the hallucinations themselves may not be causing you problems, but the underlying cause could be less benign. it's best not to mess around with the brain.
