booker dewitt - bioshock infinite

who/what he is at his base, how he changes over the game...anything and everything I would be grateful for!

it would be cool to see one who really uses the backstory of him being a drunk, gambling loser who was involved in things like the Pinkerton riots. He was not a good guy, pregame, and that makes him interesting. Keep in mind the guilt he's carrying and how he deals with it.

It's old now, but it's still a cool twist, so highlight to read spoilertext:

Flirting (general)

(Anonymous) 2014-03-30 02:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not talking about over the top, cliché flirting, but general, realistic and laid back flirting you'd see come from the average guy. I've got little experience in the subject, being disinclined to romance and dating myself, and it would really help out with playing the character I am currently playing. He's open to flirting in canon, but he isn't one of those character types who flirts with everything that moves either.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-30 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
is he good at flirting? because there's actually charming flirting, and then there's "haha so what are you wearing" flirting.

You already have a leg up if he flirts in canon! How does he do it there? Cute, charming, funny, awkward?

Some people do it by expressing interest, others are more straightforward (telling someone they look good, suggesting they get together again, etc), some people are super blunt (overtly sexual language, joking around about that sort of thing)...

Or you know. A mix.

Also body language, like... Idk, where they're looking, for how long. Posture (leaning closer to the person they're flirting with, touching if they're the type), tone of voice...

I am super curious who the character is now, anon. YOU GOT ME.

any folks around with advice on handling the balance between his self-confidence and his insecurities, useful things to keep in mind in general, his relationship with Mako, etc.? would you say that book 2 has anything worth giving a second watch with his character specifically in mind?

opinions/discussions and stuff are always a big boost for me when it comes to playing a character i'd like to do justice (and to possibly develop in a game someday), so basically anything at all is appreciated.

ROBOTS

(Anonymous) 2014-03-31 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
I'm looking for general advice on playing robot characters. (The "wishing to be a real boy" trope applies to this character.) Any thoughts from anons on voice, mechanical/robotics things I should know, or anything else?

Re: ROBOTS

(Anonymous) 2014-03-31 05:52 am (UTC)(link)
Depends. Is your robot fully sentient? Do they have a full range of emotions?

In the way of physical build, you'll be talking about joints, servos, maybe hydraulics. They'll probably use the word mind or neural net instead of brain, since brains are organs they don't have. You may want to refer to bits of programming like subroutines or decision trees. Be prepared for a lot of technobabble.

They'll have an internal gyroscope to give them a sense of balance. Instead of blood, expect something like coolant fluid or joint lubricant. If they're meant to pass as human, there will be a lot of technically extraneous devices inside them to mimic those functions. Some sort of rhythmic pump to pass as a heart, for instance. Their inhaling and exhaling, beyond possibly producing speech through a synthetic larynx, could also be used as a heat exchange. Instead of having nerves, they'll have a sensor net.

Basically, look at Data fron TNG, C3PO from Star Wars, that kind of character. For technobabble, again, TNG, and a lot of the old 80s stuff that dealt a lot with the amazing power of computers. Short Circuit, Knight Rider, Flight of the Navigator. For how robots work, look at Youtube videos about what Boston Dynamics has come up with, Honda's Asimo, the difference between Asimov's laws and what they call Friendly AI.

Sorry for the tl;dr, anon, I just love robots.

Clever characters?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-31 07:03 am (UTC)(link)
Not your supergeniuses, but your very bright professional types. I've been playing one recently who is meant to be a bit bumbling and nervous, but who should still come across as perceptive and analytical, and have got feedback along the lines of "he doesn't seem that smart".

(Anonymous) 2014-03-31 07:22 am (UTC)(link)
In all honesty I suspect, assuming that your canon is vaguely popular and you stand a reasonable chance of getting a response, that your best route would be to wait a bit and then slip in a comment and hope to get something tailored to your character.

Re: Clever characters?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-01 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
This is DWRP. Half the time, other players assume you're playing your character stupid if you don't infomod the fuck out of everything so they're never wrong. Coming to a well-reasoned and logical conclusion that happens to also be completely wrong because you're missing a key piece of information because fairies or whatever is the province of dumbos, apparently.

it's a tough thing to do in rp admittedly. are you having him take a lot of note of the other character's body language and stuff? you don't have to infomod or him to pick up on basic cues, or even just store the information away for later. with a bumbler that might be easier to show in introspection than action, but people don't mind that so much when it's actively focused on their character.

in general, really breaking down and showing a thought process helps loads

Fourth Wall Characters

(Anonymous) 2014-03-31 11:02 am (UTC)(link)
For an example, X is a fan of Star Trek, which is a TV show in his universe just like it is in ours. If I app him to a game where he has the potential to meet Star Trek characters apped in by other players, how should he interact with those characters (besides being really ecstatic when it turns out these are the real deals)? I know it's common courtesy for X to not talk about details beyond the others' canon point, but should there ever be a moment of "hey, you guys are all in that TV show I like!" or is it just entirely case-by-case dependent on X's personality?

Re: Fourth Wall Characters

(Anonymous) 2014-03-31 11:07 am (UTC)(link)
It depends on where this is happening. In a game, some of them have a 'no fourth wall' rule, so that would be when you just mentally replace Star Trek with something like Space Flight or a generic similar name. If there's no rule, it's still a good bet to check someone's permissions post (if they have one, and the same for if it's in memes) since some people really don't like playing the fourth wall game. Some do. Best bet is to ask first in any case.

Re: Fourth Wall Characters

(Anonymous) 2014-04-02 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
Check if the game allows breaking the fourth wall and the permissions post of whatever muse your character is interested. You could also add a a section on your own permissions page asking what your character is allowed to know, and others could respond with their answers. Some may allow the muse to know the other canon, but not announce it to the public.

Re: Fourth Wall Characters

(Anonymous) 2014-04-03 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
When in doubt, assume that muns don't want their characters to be fourthwalled. Even if the game allows it, which a lot of games don't, it is just common courtesy to give the other side a chance to opt out.

Didn't get a chance to respond to the anon that replied to me on the other post and felt it might be best to post this here in case anyone else wanted to toss in their two cents as well!

Basically, I'm undecided on which April I'd like the most, and am looking for some comparisons. Currently reviewing some various turtle canons for this as well. The 90s movies, 80s cartoon, 2003 cartoon, and Mirage comics are all included in what I'm revisiting, and IDW is a maybe. Not really fond of the Nick cartoon April.

~mysterious~ characters

(Anonymous) 2014-04-01 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
any advice on how to play characters with minimal backstory or motivations without getting too OC-y?

Re: ~mysterious~ characters

(Anonymous) 2014-04-01 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
These kinds of characters can be tricky. My advice would be:

- is the canon ongoing? You will be Jossed. Don't app to a game. Memes only.

- If the canon ended with the character's motivations still mysterious, do some serious thinking about what they're shown to do in canon and what they say about themselves/their goals. Scripts for comparison can be a good idea here. Consider the audience when you're doing this; a lot of mysterious characters are that way because they lie, and you don't want to base your interp on the assumption that something they said while trying to convince the dumb hero to fall into a carefully prepared trap actually reveals their deepest secrets.

- Don't be afraid of headcanon. You'll need to fill in the gaps. Don't leave it vague unless it affects other characters who are in game or might be apped. That said, do make sure that your headcanon works with and explains all of the canon you have. It's perfectly OK to suggest that a character's abandonment issues indicate that they lost someone close to them, for example.

- The more tragic the backstory elements you're considering, the more careful you want to be about including them. Nothing screams "this character is my Mary-Sue now" more than 20 pages of traumatic and tragic events headcanoned into a backstory because the character's a secretive asshole with emotional problems.

Lone Canon Warrior

(Anonymous) 2014-04-02 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
Since this is the more appropriate place to put it. Since I'm pulling someone from a pretty darn obscure canon, I'm going to be playing them as a LCW for a while. Any pitfalls you fellow LCWers out there have seen and gotten over I should be aware of, or any advice you can throw out to me? I know my wording sucks rn but hopefully you guys get my question here. v_v

Characters with synaesthesia?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
How much is too much?

Should it be a frequent feature of my narration, or should it only come up in unusual situations and/or when my character is trying to describe things to others? Should I take notes so I can keep it consistent, or is that way too much effort for a detail that most players won't care about?
