Okay

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

Fourth Wall Characters

(Anonymous) 2014-03-31 11:02 am (UTC)(link)
For an example, X is a fan of Star Trek, which is a TV show in his universe just like it is in ours. If I app him to a game where he has the potential to meet Star Trek characters apped in by other players, how should he interact with those characters (besides being really ecstatic when it turns out these are the real deals)? I know it's common courtesy for X to not talk about details beyond the others' canon point, but should there ever be a moment of "hey, you guys are all in that TV show I like!" or is it just entirely case-by-case dependent on X's personality?

It depends on where this is happening. In a game, some of them have a 'no fourth wall' rule, so that would be when you just mentally replace Star Trek with something like Space Flight or a generic similar name. If there's no rule, it's still a good bet to check someone's permissions post (if they have one, and the same for if it's in memes) since some people really don't like playing the fourth wall game. Some do. Best bet is to ask first in any case.

Check if the game allows breaking the fourth wall and the permissions post of whatever muse your character is interested. You could also add a a section on your own permissions page asking what your character is allowed to know, and others could respond with their answers. Some may allow the muse to know the other canon, but not announce it to the public.

When in doubt, assume that muns don't want their characters to be fourthwalled. Even if the game allows it, which a lot of games don't, it is just common courtesy to give the other side a chance to opt out.
