rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

These kinds of characters can be tricky. My advice would be:

- is the canon ongoing? You will be Jossed. Don't app to a game. Memes only.

- If the canon ended with the character's motivations still mysterious, do some serious thinking about what they're shown to do in canon and what they say about themselves/their goals. Scripts for comparison can be a good idea here. Consider the audience when you're doing this; a lot of mysterious characters are that way because they lie, and you don't want to base your interp on the assumption that something they said while trying to convince the dumb hero to fall into a carefully prepared trap actually reveals their deepest secrets.

- Don't be afraid of headcanon. You'll need to fill in the gaps. Don't leave it vague unless it affects other characters who are in game or might be apped. That said, do make sure that your headcanon works with and explains all of the canon you have. It's perfectly OK to suggest that a character's abandonment issues indicate that they lost someone close to them, for example.

- The more tragic the backstory elements you're considering, the more careful you want to be about including them. Nothing screams "this character is my Mary-Sue now" more than 20 pages of traumatic and tragic events headcanoned into a backstory because the character's a secretive asshole with emotional problems.

Unhelpful I know but it's the most frustrating thing when #2 happens because the show got canceled. So much lingering bitterness.
