genuinely can't stand CRAUs. also as someone who was an app mod for a game before, they're the worst apps to look at because a lot of time they're not really their canon self anymore. so it's like, do we accept it or not? such a nightmare. and playing off them can be hit or miss because they may have had cr with a different version of your character and now have insight into things your character would hold close to their chest (like secret identifies, trouble pasts, etc.) and you have to navigate it.

0/10, do not recommend.

i have mixed feelings about monster transformation. i feel like it's overdone for smut games, but i'd love a non-smut/non-'smut friendly' horror game that the transformations are awful, ugly, and terrifying. but i think i might be the minority in that.

is it just an overall deal breaker for you or just the way we usually see here in DW that's a no?

monster transformation would be fine in a novel or something, i guess, but i have a hard time getting invested in (and therefore engaging with) setting-induced physical changes in my character. like i always forget what time of month they're supposed to sprout wings and self-lubing asses or what flavor cryptid we're all turning into this event. nor can i be assed to remember.

i want to play my characters as mostly themselves, i think. going through it, yes, but as themselves.

sounds like the idea of playing with craus triggered the other anon something fierce so

some people are capable of playing them decently and pretending like we're all stuck with shit-tier garbage fires waiting to spring surprise cr on us is dumb

most games don't allow that shit if they do allow craus and most crau players know not to do it

metagamey probably not, but terrible? here are recent craus i've seen in the past year(ish) while browsing tdms:

attempt to age up character to slide past age prefs
desperation to keep cr info to game hop with friends (chara had only been in prev game for 2mo)
bring in trauma from previous game and making it the forefront of their characterization
no character development just wanting to keep physical status from prev game (one was cat ears the other was an omega asshole for breeding monsters)

i won't app to games that allow crau but sometimes i play around on the tdms because bakerstreet is a mess. that's how i end up seeing shit like this. this is panfandom rp - most of us are here to play off of characters we recognize from media we like. not someone's oc wearing the skin of a character like a fursuit

I get what you're saying, but most of those characters could also organically exist in a game if they've played in it long enough. Is there really a fundamental difference between "John is a CRAU with trauma from another game and is now 19 years old" and "John has been in Torment RPG for two years and has trauma and is now 19 years old"? By your definition, every character is an OC if they've been in a game long enough.

if john is in his game (we will call it game A) for two years and a castmate apps into that game then the castmate has agreed to step into a space where john was there first as well as accepting the terms and conditions of the game premise

if john apps as a crau to game B, then he is submitting not only his castmates but also everyone he tags to the premise of a previous game and all his development that they may or may not actually give a shit about. maybe i joined game B because i really like fairy courts and political intrigue. but now i have to deal with join who has lost his arm to a zombie bite and and is yapping my character's ear off about how necessary cannibalism to survive in tough times.

"but how is that any different from a canon character who went through that" well one - something has a way different tone when it's a canon event and it's a homebrew situation. two - if they're a castmate it's even worse. like i said, this is why i won't app to crau games

"you can still play in the game and avoid the craus" - if it's a game setting then it might end up being my castmate. or my character might hear about the bullshit because we have mutual cr.

i hate how a lot of argument for crau is 'that'd happen in game anyway with enough time to grow the character or with idles and reapps'. okay, maybe? but your character coming in with a hivemind to two other crau characters would not. and if it's a new game opening, having a clutch of people that already act like they're so over the whole mechanic of games in general is a mood killer.

if you want to keep playing a thing but the game you were in has closed, make a musebox and play there. otherwise you can't convince me that you're not just crauing into a new game to use it as a stage to play out your polycule.

this. and like, i don't want you to come to this new game with all your old jaded cr that act like you're the grandparents of all the games everywhere as you console all the new cr over 'this should be over in a week'.

if the game has ended, that sucks. i'm sorry for you. but play your game 1 cr in a psl or musebox. or on memes. i see that a lot. don't drag it to a new game because you're carrying game 1 mood/feel into game 2, which it doesn't always fit in. and the notion of 'if char x had been in game long enough, it'd be the same thing' doesn't fly for new cr. don't take your game 1 cr into game 2 and expect mods of game 2 to respect your game 1 shit. you're using new mods to put out a buffet for you to play what you really want to play, which is game 1 shit. that's the only reason to use crau. 'i'm not done with game 1'. that, or 'i don't want to start over from scratch with my character when i've developed them so far'. this isn't a video game. you shouldn't get to save hours you've played from one game to a next. start over. you might actually find stuff you like.

and sometimes they succeed at it, and their CRAU and previous game stuff dominates so much that the new game's premise is just window dressing, it revolves around the established polycules. im glad it's pretty uncommon these days.

Tho personally I think games should have craus as part of whatever reward/regain system is in place, so they at least have to start the game fresh like everyone else.

if i ran a game again w/ crau i actually had an idea similar to the one you suggested just now. everyone starts off fresh from canon and if you want to play the crau version you gotta submit for memory regains like any other form of bonus ac. players interested would have to write out a memory list like a memloss game, and they can spend ac bonus points on one. memories involving deep knowledge of other canon characters are off limits, as that would constitute metagaming, specifics tbd because im just shitposting on rpa and not actually running this.

and there's general themes of memory fuckery and illusion in the game itself so...did the crau actually happen? is it just the setting fucking with you? that sort of thing.

so everyone has to play in the game they're actually a part of, but also if you have a fun idea for your crau that isn't just metagaming you can work it in

op and this is why crau games are a dealbreaker for me. the craus themselves i could take or leave, i'm sure there's good and bad of varying taste levels. mostly i'm just not interested in the last game you were in, the cr you're bringing from it, or how your polycule bonded by fucking aliens or fighting npc dragons in Jamjarlandia. don't bore me with that. 😔

i could put "no crau" on all my posts, sure! but as we can see, people tend to feel some kind of way about their craus. so nah.

I don't particularly hate CRAUs myself since I genuinely do not know enough canons to know which ones they are, but I do think that they can have the same issue as OCs where they'd have some mechanics that make you go wtf when the player just makes the character all about that. Maybe I'd feel differently if it happened to me, but for now I treat them as opt out on a case to case basis.

Never found monster transformation appealing though. I hate having to recall every detail change for every character because not everyone reminds you what they have changed. I've also gotten people who go WELL AKSUALLY at me for not remembering Bobby now has five horns and bloody red bug eyes when they have none of that info in their journal or icons and act as if I was a fool for not realizing that. I guess it's similar to CRAUs where it just starts to sound like their personal blorbo than the actual character and they might as well make an OC.
