Rundown: rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

I was hoping to dip my toes back into rp after a couple of years away with some low-stakes threading but BS is pretty quiet and the sea of top-levels is full of characters I've never heard of. (This old dog can't learn new tricks.)

I could try to top-level myself but I remember even back in the day where there was more threading on BS it wasn't terribly effective if you weren't part of a popular canon.

Is there an option I haven't considered or am I SOL?

try cross-canon. it doesn't matter if you're canonblind to most of them. click to see which journals have some quick info about their character, some have great first impressions write-ups you can work off of.

we're all in the same boat.

I also came back after some years away and the best advice I got was just to tag out. Even if it was a canon I was unfamiliar with. I’ve had a lot of fun with it and have even gotten a few psls out of it.

Different anon, but as one also having occasional issues getting tags, I'm curious, if you(general) would tag someone that just has a blank journal or just move on to someone who put info in theirs?

I always put some info on my char in the journal, but I see a LOT of blank journals too, where I would have to do the research to find out who the heck they are/what their canon is, and sometimes i wonder if it's even worth it. :o Is this is a 50/50 thing?

For example I'll see a top level, go "Ooh interesting icon/a canon name I'm unfamiliar with, who are they- *checks journal. Nothing there.*" and then I just -sigh-. I know it's a stupidly minor gripe but I genuinely wonder about this from time to time!

I got the best thread imaginable from a blank journal and a character I was canonblind too. The only problem is, they disappeared and never returned fml.

I also skip it. i don't want to have to get into a whole new canon just to tag a stranger— not because it's bad to do so or anything, but because i'm literally going to get too distracted googling this canon and then end up forgetting to tag the person. i've done it more than once.

but in addition to that, I guess I get kind of worried that since I'm blind to the canon and the player's preferences on a completely blank journal, i'll come up with a starter they don't like or tag them with a character that they absolutely don't want.

Okay now I don't feel so bad about skipping blank journals. I don't usually worry too much about the permissions, as I just assume they don't have any particular permissions/triggers and if they did, they just wouldn't respond to my tags/tag me in general.

yeah, i tag blank journals without a problem. i always just do crosscanon tag-ins as first encounters, so it doesn't bother me at all. i can't even remember the last time i read a permissions or info post tbh.

I try to get an idea of what the canon is, but I think that's mostly for my own curiosity, i should probably get into the habit of tagging blank ones too because why not?

i don't toplevel much and tag out. i make a point of not tagging blank journals. there's enough people more invested in their characters' first impressions that i don't need to bother with people who can't do the bare minimum effort.

but as someone playing from an obscure canon, blank journals just mean, to me, that they don't want crosscanon because it's working with the assumption that people already know the character.

i skip them. even if i know the canon, most memes i play in are shipping memes, and if i don't know if you like or hate our characters i'm not wasting my time writing a starter that you might hate.

I loathe blank journals,especially on ship/smut memes. I play a character that can fall into folks "no" category so I check journals to see if they're good with that and get so disappointed when the journal is blank.

Like I think your character looks cool/interesting! But I'm not going to waste time tagging someone who doesn't want to be tagged by my character.

for crosscanon purposes i def have an easier tine with an info post to work with, but tbh i'll skip blank journals even on castmates anymore. like yeah i know the character but i still don't know the player's preferences...are they ok with backtagging, are they even into this ship i like between these characters? etc. i don't have tons of time to just trial and error starters trying to find out, so i just move on until i find somebody with at least a few more details to share

in my case im also playing from a popular canon with an abundance of castmates on memes atm, so it's not like i've got a dearth of options

I skip them unless they tag me first. I could tag them, but my energy and time is limited and I'd rather tag people who at least has a quick blurb that gives me an idea of the character, especially fantasy characters who might have features I can't tell from icon alone.

If it’s a shipping/smut meme and there’s no info, I skip. It’s frustrating when every journal I check has not a single clue if they would be interested in anything I have to offer them.

tag someone who looks interesting. doesn't matter if you don't know the canon. honestly, i feel more people would be happier if they did so, because there are some great people out there if they just took a leap of faith.

as an aside, bakerstreet has been pretty slow these last few weeks even for for how it regularly is. i think people are just getting swept up either in the holidays or the seasonal depression is getting us (technically, it's also nanowrimo so i'm sure some people are off focusing on that too).

other anons are right though, you should tag out to anyone who looks interesting or tl in memes you really want to play in (vs tl-ing in ALL the memes). who knows? maybe someone will recognize your canon. and i'm sure we'd all welcome a new face popping up.

man idk it's actually extremely easy to get threads and psls from BS if you take initiative and reach out to people. i just scroll down posts every once in a while and pm a journal/character i'm interested in and almost never fail to get a response? i mean sure sometimes you start something and find out you don't hit it off for whatever reason, but that's fine! it happens! point is, it's actually really easy to find people to rp with there if you simply make the first move. i will however say that i only use it for fishing for new psls and threads and prefer doing the actual writing in priv comms or museboxes, so maybe i am contributing to the desolate vibe.
