yeah, i tag blank journals without a problem. i always just do crosscanon tag-ins as first encounters, so it doesn't bother me at all. i can't even remember the last time i read a permissions or info post tbh.

I try to get an idea of what the canon is, but I think that's mostly for my own curiosity, i should probably get into the habit of tagging blank ones too because why not?

whatever works for you? for me, info posts add zero value, so i don't really use their existence or absence as a decisive metric.

i too hate reading about characters in the reading and writing about characters hobby

that's a weirdly aggressive answer, when i've explained already why they info posts aren't key to how i approach tagging in. if you find them useful, power to you, whatever helps. i prefer to write tag-ins same way i do tdm top levels, assuming a first encounter. if you like to do things differently, go wild.

what do you do, then, in the absence of prefs? ftr I am asking genuinely bc my brain comes to a standstill when someone doesn't give me prefs and I want to know what others do in this situation so I can also do it

*not ayrt i got confused where I was responding actually

i just choose a meme prompt i find the most fun or inspiring (as long as the other person doesn't explicitly exclude it in their top level), and then i build a scene around it, with a hook engaging their character as a stranger. typically, that means the hook ends up being something my character does or says to trigger a response.

take the latest rain meme: i'm randomly feeling the puddles prompt, and oh look, my character's desperately chasing after a faster thief to recover their swindled wallet. not only do they fail to catch up, but they also splash your character something fierce when they take a negligent turn and land in a puddle. your character can now curse mine out, help them up, offer some shelter or an escort to the police station in the rain, accuse them or running some kind of elaborate scam, or bravely help retrieve the wallet. i don't really need to assume anything about your character's background to get this going, and i'm happy to learn about your character as my character does.

ohhh ok I get it. I would honestly follow that logic if I were tagging in a game? bc I already figure if you're in a game with me, and you haven't opted out, then you are open to cr from everyone in the game.

While I can see myself writing that toplevel you described in that context, Idk if I'm confident enough on memes to go into it without knowing if my character is a No, or if theyre only looking for smut but I tagged in gen, etc. which might be a false dichotomy since I guess anyone could also just decide not to respond to your tagin in a game, too

i find people are generally good about listing m/f, f/f, m/m or world's your oyster in their top levels on the shipping memes i haunt, so i haven't really run into problems on that front.

generally, i can't recall the last time i had a tag-in ignored, and i don't currently play from especially popular canons. most are pretty niche. purely ime, people have typically been thrilled to be tagged by a perfect stranger - it's a sea of top levels out there.

tbh I dont know why I used m/m as an example bc you are right about that one. im more in the camp of "it's hard to know if this person wants crosscanon or not" and don't play from... well i wouldn't say I play from obscure canons, just not ones that are currently popular, so with the exception of one character I'm not really tagging castmates.

granted I probably should just come up with a few recycleable gen starters that I don't mind if people don't take me up on bc im just gonna keep missing opportunities as it is

da, but my character has been an explicitly listed yes before in people's preferences and I've still gotten ignored, so I really wouldn't take the presence or absence of preferences as the sole sign of whether or not you're welcome or if they'll tag back

to be honest i've never even considered the fact people put whole characters as "yes"es instead of just like, themes, but that's a good point

yeah bakerstreet's gonna bakerstreet, people will flake for any reason under the sun, which is why a lot of us like to reduce the numbers by not tagging people who don't want to be tagged by our characters, and the best way to know is to check info/permissions posts...
