as someone who gave this game a try a few months ago, I found it pretty difficult to get into.

there's an overwhelming amount of lore and game mechanics. between TDMs, monthly events, and events from previous years being up for grabs there were 10+ mod-written prompts along with a bunch of established groups of players off doing their own things. finding someone who wants to play the same thing as you can be a struggle. it might be because I didn't get folded into an existing group, but although I got some really great threads I had trouble grounding my character in the setting and getting things going between events.

it seems like a neat game but I'm also not surprised that it isn't attracting a lot of people outside the established crew, and a lot of the people who are established seem to be moving on to private games.

unfortunately a game can be pretty and interesting and have mods who seem excited but still flop if it can't get enough interested players which may be what's happening here. i had people interested in it on my plurk timeline but a lot of them bailed once another game tdm went up that they were more into. they were interested in the seasons powers game more than a space game.

But there hasn't been a day where I haven't wished I could have done something different and stopped all this before it got so bad.

but at the same time, skeevy doesn't really begin to cover dual identities to evade bans or dnis imo, that'd be way too light a word

as a player: is less embarrassing if there's a revision or decline. help prevent app plagiarism (an extremely minor concern, but, i appreciate the privacy and option for choice if i want to additionally put my app out there in my journal for public reference or keep it to myself. really the only other people who need to see any app are game mods).

as a mod: it lets me process apps out of order if i need a second opinion, permits me the option to make a hard choice if we're near a game cap without accusations of favoritism or whatever, permits me to pre-screen problematic players and privately decline them if needed (which is very rare).

and while i'm here: if you know someone's making extra identities here for the purpose of evading dnis and you know who they're doing it to, please please please tell that person. if you were in their shoes, you'd be grateful if someone told you

How to play a Theremin.

The game I was in previously didn't allow anyone to app the WoL. Fan OCs were allowed but could not be "THE WOL", so some reworking of their history would be required, usually making them an extended member of the scions called upon for aid during major plot beats, etc. I've also seen some other games only allow one person to app the WoL, with the rest getting the rework treatment mentioned above.

When referring to the WoL, our whole cast just defaulted to Meteor and/or would use a neutral "they" when talking about them.

I've always kind of wanted another player's character to be my NPC's WoL, but since my character is on the popular side, have also felt some hesitation. My advice would be to do what feels comfortable for you, anon. If you come to really like one (or more) of the WoLs in game, reach out to them. If not, I don't think anyone would think badly of you for defaulting to Meteor either.

I usually mesh with whatever my cast is doing. If we have a WOL and the cast is treating them as our WOL I go with that. If we do not have one we default to Meteor or vagueness.

this was my experience. older games can be hard to break into sometimes due to the history and well established cr circles not having time or energy for a lot of new people. it isn't a bad thing imo it is just part of the life cycle of games.

changing a character's appearance just so it's easier to find a PB is honestly not going to do the OC any favors if they're that malleable or ambiguous.

imo a good character design should have some immediate distinguishing feature that tells you a bit about them just from looking at their face. do they have a weathered expression, scars or marks? perhaps they've been through some hardships. do they have extravagant jewelry, fine clothes, well-kept hair? perhaps they're familiar with luxury and comforts. do they have some interesting moles or uniquely recognizable birthmark? some sci-fi prosthesis? are they fuckable? are they loaded up with piercings or just a conservative one? do they have CURSED or BABYGIRL tattooed on their forehead? maybe my character can comment on or ask about any of that.

but that's me personally, i'm drawn to more weird looking or unique characters (canon or oc).

I would like some complicated fantasy of the book or manga or comic variety. Anything I can read and not have to watch. Complicated meaning intense court intrigue or detailed magical systems I can really sink my teeth into. Recommend me your most dense options, I want to be occupied for a long time.
