I might do it if the reserved person hasn't topleveled yet, or keep a gentle eye on if they actually apply. not all reserves end up applying do sometimes you can slide in anyway.

if the reserve topleveled I usually don't bother just because they're more likely to apply that way and I can't be fucked to do app challenges when they're allowed.

should you reserve if you're playing from some obscure thing no one knows much less plays from, or is it a waste of effort because it's not like someone will try and app the same character so you should just app

yes, reserves are helpful for mods trying to get a headcount of who may be interested in apping.

I play an iconless OC for psl purposes but I'm kind of interested in branching out and playing her in memes. But... she doesn't have any icons and would be difficult to get icons for unless I commission or draw them myself (nonhuman with several distinguishing features.) Is it a big faux-pas to tag out without icons on bakerstreet? Or even if I just had one(1) icon, would that be weird?

One icon is better than none at all, because it makes things simpler for you and your thread partners when you don't need to mention the distinguishing features every time you tag somebody new.

More are good, but I've also seen enough poorly-drawn (or badly shooped) icons that I honestly would have rather those players focus on how they were writing than having 15 icons of dubious aesthetic quality. I'm not talking about minor "faults" that don't match our usual conventions like borders or icons not being 100x100 squares, but things that would at the very least be distracting or disturbing.

I have canon characters I get play with where I only have one icon for them. If I had a character with literally no art and no PB, I'd personally upload a filler icon just to have one (a picture of an ocean or water for an aquatic creature, wires for an android, clouds for something that flies, books for a librarian, etc), but if someone without icons tagged me I'd tag back regardless.

anons are being pretty generous on this one.

the strong icon culture in these parts means an entirely empty journal would stand out and a majority of people would still pass over a 1 icon character for someone perceived as putting more effort into their journals/visuals. filler icons aren’t that popular, either.

visually speaking it's easier to "see" a comment with an icon.

seconding the suggestion for getting one or two "filler" icons of thematically related things. or even see if you can find something that might vaguely be them (a lizard's hand if they're some kind of lizard person, or a cat's eye, demon tail, etc).

plenty of people only have 1 icon or only ever use their default icon. you might have some people avoid you or not tag you back but even 1 icon will be better than none at all.

Seconding "one icon is better than none" but it's still not great. As an OC player you're going to have to do a lot of reaching out in the first place, and you will definitely get people to tag you back, however, you'll get noticeably more reciprocity if you have more (consistent, some measure of aesthetically pleasing) icons.

For a non-human or a character with very distinctive features that make it harder to find a pb for, picrews can help fill the gap!

Or browse the main page of picrew and look for similar looking fantasy/non-human ones. You can make your character and with a little luck and if it's a varied piccrew, maybe get a few expressions out of it if you adjust the eyebrows and mouth or whatever. It's better than none and better than one.

tbh if I'm just testing the waters with a character, I will do just a nice set of picrews and stop there, see where things go. We put more stock into icons around here than I think any of us would care to admit, but, I also wouldn't go breaking my back over a character that might not stick for unrelated reasons. If after a few months I'm still really feeling the character, then I'd look into commissioning a nice icon expression sheet from someone. There are plenty of artists around dwrp and plurk to network with who deserve the money and will give you exactly what you want.

I know that dwtools as an extension is no longer on the firefox store, but I could have sworn that there used to be a download and/or explanation of how to install it even though it was down. But with google search down, I can't find it anymore. Can anyone help?

people with oft laughed-at kinks (inflation, vore, feet, bimboes, blueberry, weight gain, stuffing, mpreg, etc) who have been open about it on dwrp, have you faced any backlash/social estrangement/awkwardness with friends? i really want to actually play the things i want to play with canon characters but that means i lose anonymity and being of the 'lulz deviantart is so WEIRD!!11!1! look at those freaks!' generation i'm worried about what people will think of me and if i'll be silently judged/if it'll "change things" for me socially.

this is going to sound silly, but has anyone had any luck describing dwrp drama to a therapist? i keep relitigating a situation in my head and if it were anything else by this point it's something that i normally would have taken to my therapist, but she's so normal and i think there's no way i could dwrp 101 her in a way that she would understand :(

A player in my game is playing a character from a 2D medium that has been adapted into a movie. They're using the movie actor as a PB for the character even though the character is from the original canon, not the adaptation.

Is this something that's generally ok in dwrp? I've thought about bringing it to the attention to the mods since I think it's confusing and might be offputting if someone decides to app the movie version. Is it worth doing that?

Do people see it as a bad sign if you don't have an HMD or allow anonymous comments on your journal? If I opt out, will people want me to justify it?

I really don't want to engage with it. I have had some bad experiences with anon harassment and stuff on other platforms. (And I don't mean, like, people didn't like someone's writing and they got sensitive. I mean, like, people harassed a trans friend for writing a trans character, and posted their info on reddit so people with no connection to the site could also harass them.)

And I guess, relatedly, how common is anon harassment around here these days?
