Seconding "one icon is better than none" but it's still not great. As an OC player you're going to have to do a lot of reaching out in the first place, and you will definitely get people to tag you back, however, you'll get noticeably more reciprocity if you have more (consistent, some measure of aesthetically pleasing) icons.

For a non-human or a character with very distinctive features that make it harder to find a pb for, picrews can help fill the gap!

Or browse the main page of picrew and look for similar looking fantasy/non-human ones. You can make your character and with a little luck and if it's a varied piccrew, maybe get a few expressions out of it if you adjust the eyebrows and mouth or whatever. It's better than none and better than one.

tbh if I'm just testing the waters with a character, I will do just a nice set of picrews and stop there, see where things go. We put more stock into icons around here than I think any of us would care to admit, but, I also wouldn't go breaking my back over a character that might not stick for unrelated reasons. If after a few months I'm still really feeling the character, then I'd look into commissioning a nice icon expression sheet from someone. There are plenty of artists around dwrp and plurk to network with who deserve the money and will give you exactly what you want.
